Tribals in Maoist hotbed now get to watch films, documentaries

Tribals of Chhattisgarh's Abhujmad region, a naxal hotbed having scant mass media presence, can now watch films in a mini-theatre set up in the area, an initiative to connect them to the outside world. The first theatre has been set up at Basing village in Abhujmad region of Narayanpur district by the state police and there are plans to develop more such facilities in the backward area soon, a police senior official said. The mini-theatre was inaugurated Thursday at the village, located around 400 km from Raipur, and locals came out in large numbers to watch the popular Bollywood film "Baahubali" on the big screen, Narayanpur Superintendent of Police Jitendra Shukla told PTI. "The idea is to connect tribals of Abhujmad to the outside world which has been unknown to them largely because of Maoist activities," he said. The overwhelming response to their films with unique plots zombie apocalypse in "Go Goa Gone" and the urban legend of Nale Ba in "Stree" has inspired Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK to take these stories forward. The director duo have started work on "Go Goa Gone" follow-up. The 2013 film featured Saif Ali Khan, Vir Das and Kunal Kemmu that went on to be a surprise hit. Celebrated percussionist Bickram Ghosh, who composed music in the crime thriller 'Byomkesh Gowtro', has claimed that he has introduced rock and roll music for the first time in Bengali film. "The director Arindam Sil wanted a western classical slash metal effect and a cabaret song which would reflect the era of 1950s. But I insisted he should use rock and roll effect in the film," Ghosh told PTI. Rock and roll made inroads in the western musical shows in Kolkata in 1952, Ghosh said. "To my knowledge, it is the first use of rock and roll in a Bengali film," he said.
