Filmmaker Kalpana Lajmi passes away at 64

Renowned filmmaker Kalpana Lajmi died Sunday morning at the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital here, a family member said. She was 64. Lajmi was suffering from a chronic kidney disease and liver failure. "She passed away at the (Kokilaben Dhirubhai) Ambani hospital at 4.30 am. She was suffering from a chronic kidney disease and liver failure. "She was on dialysis. She has been in and out of the hospital for three years. The last rites will be possibly conducted today," her brother Dev Lajmi told PTI. Lajmi, a director, producer and screenwriter, was known for working on real subjects. Her films often had a woman at the centre. Some of her popular films include "Rudaali", "Daman", "Darmiyaan". Lajmi's last movie as a director was "Chingaari" in 2006, based on a novel "The Prostitute and the Postman" by Bhupen Hazarika, who was her partner.

Culture binds countries together: Zila Khan

A firm believer that culture connects countries and people across continents, India's well-known Sufi singer Zila Khan wants to leave a legacy of 15-20 musicians of at least her calibre who will perform globally, showcasing India's soft power. 'Kingsman 3' to release in 2019

Kenya Court lifts ban on lesbian film 'Rafiki'

A Kenyan High Court has temporarily lifted the ban on a lesbian love story titled 'Rafiki', thus giving the movie a chance to qualify for the 'foreign language film' category at the 91st Oscars.Judge Wilfrida Okwany recently ruled that the film can be screened until September 30 to make it eligible for Oscars, reported The Hollywood Reporter."I am not convinced that Kenya is such a weak society that it cannot handle a gay theme. There are Kenyans who paid the ultimate price for the freedoms we enjoy today," she said in her decision. France selects 'Memoir of War' for 91st Oscars

France has officially selected 'Memoir of War' as its entry for the 'foreign language film' category at 91st Oscars.Directed by Emmanuel Finkiel, 'Memoir of War' is a World War II drama, which stars Melanie Thierry and Benjamin Biolay, reported The Hollywood Reporter.The flick is an adaptation of Marguerite Duras' semi-autobiographical novel titled 'The War: A Memoir'.The Music Box Films acquired U.S. rights of the movie in February, after it had opened in the theatres across France on January 24, reported Variety.The story is set in June 1944, when France was still under German occupation.
