God's Grace: When rower Bhagwan quit journalism to support alcoholic father
Heart-wrenching stories often become a part of sporting folklore and Indian Army rower Bhagwan Singh's journey from Moga to Palembang is as fascinating as it could be. In 2012, a 19-year-old Bhagwan was pursuing BA journalism (2nd year) in Chandigarh. Who knows he might have been covering the 2018 Asian Games but fate and the need for financial assistance to support an alcoholic father, forced him to put the pen down and pick up the oar with the backing of Indian Army. His life changed completely. After reaching the lightweight double sculls finals at the Asian Games, Bhagwan narrated his story to PTI. "My father is still very sick. His one lung is not functioning anymore. I was happy doing journalism but my father had to stop driving trucks after being diagnosed with tuberculosis," Bhagwan, who has qualified for the lightweight double sculls final alongside Rohit Kumar, said. Akshay Kumar has emerged as the seventh highest-paid actor in the world by earning USD 40.5 million in 2018, according to Forbes magazine. The "Gold" actor is closely followed by his contemporary Salman Khan in the ninth place, raking in USD 38.5 million. Kumar and Khan are the only two Bollywood actors to make it to the top 10 highest-paid actors list, compiled by the publication. Kumar, who came in 10th last year, upped his game by USD 3 million. Khan stayed at his ninth rank, but with an increase of USD 1.5 million this year. Shah Rukh Khan, who was at the eighth spot on the 2017 list, did not find a place in 2018. The list has been topped by Hollywood star George Clooney, who scored a career-high pre-tax paycheque of USD 239 million between June 1, 2017 and June 1, 2018. Raj and DK chose to direct a web series over 'Stree'
Director duo Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK were earlier supposed to helm Rajkummar Rao-starrer horror comedy "Stree" but due to time constraints they had to let go off their pet project. Raj and DK, who have directed, "Go Goa Gone", say the script was originally written for them to direct from. "When we wrote it ('Stree') and developed it, we were thinking to direct it... But we couldn't fit it into the timeline and we did not had much window to push it. "To do it next year would have been too late for a unique film like this. We found Amar Kaushik (director) for doing this film. We have worked with him earlier. 'Stree' was a great experience," the duo told PTI. Ninth edition of Mountain Echoes lit fest begins with tribute to Vajpayee
The curtains on the ninth edition of the Mountain Echoes literary festival went up with a tribute to former Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who was remembered at the annual event for his animated style of poetry recitations. Recalling one of Vajpayee's visits to Bhutan, festival co-director Namita Gokhale last evening said his poetry was loved beyond the language barriers. "In 1977, Atal ji came here and, impromptu, as was his style, with his hand movements, read out a poem in Hindi, which everybody loved but could not understand," the writer said. Vajpayee passed away last week at the age of 93 following a prolonged illness. Amit Sadh will be seen playing the role of an Army officer in a web series inspired by the Uri attacks. Applause Entertainment, the content studio from the Aditya Birla Group, is set to bring a gritty, realistic and dramatic recounting of the September 2016 terror attacks and India's surgical strikes. Titled "India Strikes - 10 Days", is based on the first chapter from Shiv Aroor and Rahul Singh's book "India's Most Fearless". It is a multi-season web series featuring Amit in the lead, who in the past has acted in a web series "Breathe" for Amazon Prime Video. Veteran journalist Kuldeep Nayyar dies at 95
Veteran journalist Kuldeep Nayyar passed away on Thursday at a hospital in Delhi. His cremation will take place at Lodhi Road crematorium at 1 pm.Nayyar served as the High commissioner of India to the United Kingdom in 1990 and was also nominated as a Member of the Rajya Sabha in 1997.Expressing his grief over Nayyar's demise, Prime Minister Narendra Modi remembered him as "an intellectual giant"."Kuldip Nayar was an intellectual giant of our times. Frank and fearless in his views, his work spanned across many decades. His strong stand against the Emergency, public service and commitment to a better India will always be remembered.
