France, India agree to establish maritime surveillance centres in India

French Space Agency CNES on Wednesday signed an agreement with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to set up a maritime surveillance centre in the country.A press statement issued by the CNES said that the agreement was signed by CNES President Jean-Yves Le Gall and India's space agency Chairman K. Sivan in Bengaluru. This signature follows on from the broader agreement signed last March during President Emmanuel Macron's state visit to India."The CNES-ISRO agreement, intended to supply an operational system for detecting, identifying and tracking ships in the Indian Ocean, provides for a maritime surveillance centre to be set up in India in May this year, sharing of capacity to process existing satellite data and joint development of associated algorithms," the statement read."For the next phase of the programme, studies for an orbital infrastructure to be operated jointly by the two countries are ongoing. Full-grown tigress found dead in MP's Pench reserve

Forest staff Wednesday found the carcass of an adult tigress in Khavasa buffer zone of the Pench Tiger Reserve, an official said. The carcass was spotted during patrolling. "The body of a tigress was found in Khavasa buffer zone of the reserve and action is being taken on the matter as per the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) guidelines. More details will be shared later," said Pench Tiger Reserve's director, Vikram Singh Parihar. According to forest sources, the body of the wild cat was found in deep forest under Kothar beat behind a depot. The carcass appears to be two-three days old, they said, adding the exact reason behind the death of the tigress is not yet clear. A dog squad and forensic teams are searching the area for clues to ascertain what caused the tigress's death.

AP: Farmers protest against power grid construction, demand adequate compensation

Farmers on Wednesday staged a protest against the construction of a power grid at Nandigama Mandal in Krishna district.The protest was organised against the electricity department for allowing construction of towers in the fields without consulting the farmers.A number of agitators climbed towers alleging that officers have not paid them due compensation, adding that the power grid construction is underway without their consent."The power line construction is going across fields. We have been pleading MLAs, MPs and other officials for the last three years but they all ignored us. The electricity department has forcibly erected the grid. Now, we are protesting against the authorities and we will not let them continue their work until they pay us our compensation," a farmer told ANI."We are not against the power grid construction but we want proper compensation," he added.

NEEPCO handed over 2 hydro power projects in Meghalaya

The North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Limited (NEEPCO) would be executing two hydel power projects in power-starved Meghalaya, Power Minister James K Sangma said Wednesday. At a cabinet meeting held on Tuesday evening, it was decided that the two projects would be given to NEEPCO, Sangma said. The two power projects are Umja-ut Hydro Electric Power project with a capacity of 69MW (renamed as Wah Umiam Stage I) and Umduna Hydro Power Project of 57 MW (also renamed as Wah Umiam Stage II). The cabinet has approved the allotment of both these projects to NEEPCO which is already implementing stage III Wah Umiam power project, he said. Sangma further said that the cabinet has also approved a proposal by the state-owned Meghalaya Electric Corporation Ltd (MeECL) to avail a loan from the Rural Electrification Corporation Ltd to execute the 3x42 MW Myntdu Leshka Hydro power project. ISRO experts to receive training for Gaganyaan project in France: CNES

Experts from ISRO will start receiving training for the 'Gaganyaan' project at the Toulouse Space Centre in France from this month, French space agency CNES said Wednesday. The experts will also be trained at CADMOS, the centre for development of microgravity applications and space operations, and the MEDES Space Clinic in France, it said. Govt amends hazardous and other wastes rules; bans import of solid plastic waste

The Centre has amended the Hazardous and Other Wastes (Management and Transboundary Movement) Rules, 2016 to include prohibition on import of solid plastic waste even in special economic zones (SEZ) and by export-oriented units (EOU). The Ministry of Environment amended the rules by an order to strengthen the implementation of environmentally sound management of hazardous waste in the country. "The amendment has been done keeping into consideration the 'Ease of Doing Business' and boosting 'Make in India' initiative by simplifying the procedures under the Rules, while at the same time upholding the principles of sustainable development and ensuring minimal impact on the environment," a ministry official said. Agri Min seeks farmers' views to improve sector in next 5 yrs

Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh Wednesday kickstarted an initiative 'Kisan Ki Mann Ki Baat' to take suggestions from farmers to improve the farm sector in the next five years. The first round of dialogue was held with farmers of six states including Uttar Pradesh in the national capital. The participating farmers and agri-institutes have given their written suggestions. A similar dialogue will be held with farmers of other states as well. "The suggestions that we received today will be uploaded on a portal. It is for the first time such an initiative is being organised," Singh told reporters. Farmers across the country have been asked to send their suggestions to the Agriculture Ministry. The suggestions will be collated by March 10 and incorporated in the election manifesto of the BJP, he said. The objective behind this exercise is to ascertain what farmers wish from the government in the next five years and ensure the agriculture sector improves, he added.

The power generated by this project will be sold through long term Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) to commercial and industrial customers. Gadkari lays foundation stone for development of intermodal station in Nagpur

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari Wednesday laid the foundation stone for development of an intermodal station, to be built at an estimated cost of Rs 1,588.81 crore, in Nagpur. The intermodal station (IMS) is a passenger terminal infrastructure which integrates various transportation modes like rail, road, mass rapid transit system, bus rapid transit and other para-modal transportation modes. Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari laid the foundation stone for the development and maintenance of IMS at Ajni railway station in Nagpur Wednesday, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways said in a statement. Jammu municipal body to collect used puja materials from temples for disposal

Jammu Municipal Corporation on Wednesday launched a waste-collection vehicle to pick up used 'puja materials' from temples for proper disposal. The move is aimed at arresting the trend of throwing such materials in water bodies, including the Tawi river, and other places in the winter capital, JMC mayor Chander Mohan Gupta told reporters here. "The auto introduced for the purpose will go to the temples to collect the used flowers and other materials which will be later turned into compost at an identified place and distributed among interested people for use as fertilizer," he said. The JMC is in the process of installing a machine at a cost of Rs 20 lakh for treating the waste materials at its Bandu Rakh land, Gupta said.
