Chip maker Micron Technology's decision to set up a $2.75-billion plant at Sanand near Ahmedabad indicates that Gujarat's dedicated semiconductor policy is bearing fruit and attracting global players, the state government has said. Gujarat had in July last year announced a dedicated policy to draw new investments in the semiconductor sector by offering incentives and subsidies to start operations in the state. The Gujarat Semiconductor Policy', unveiled by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, will remain in force till 2027. The policy has been designed in line with the Centre's India Semiconductor Mission' to attract and facilitate new projects in the sector, the government said in a release. The procurement of goods and services from the government portal GeM is expected to touch Rs 3.5 lakh crore by the end of this fiscal due to higher buying activities by various ministries and departments, a senior government official said. The government e-Market (GeM) portal was launched on August 9, 2016, for online purchases of goods and services by all the central government ministries and departments. "As of today, the procurement has reached Rs 2.4 lakh crore and going by the trend, the procurement this fiscal will reach close to Rs 3.50 lakh crore, hopefully," GeM CEO P K Singh told reporters here. In 2021-22, the procurement value stood at Rs 1.06 lakh crore. It crossed Rs 2 lakh crore last year. Singh said that the share of central public sector enterprises (CPSEs) in the total buying of goods and services is increasing at a healthy rate. Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages (HCCB) Ltd -- the bottling arm of beverage major Coca Cola in India -- on Wednesday said it is planning to invest Rs 3,000 crore in Gujarat to set up a state-of-the-art facility to manufacture juice and aerated beverages in Rajkot, which is projected to commence operations in 2026. "The investment is expected to create a considerable industrial footprint, fostering substantial economic and social growth in the region," HCCB said in a statement. "The Government of Gujarat, in turn, has assured comprehensive support to facilitate HCCB in obtaining all necessary permissions, registrations, approvals, and clearances, in a time-bound manner," said an HCCB statement. Gujarat-based AMNS India is planning to set up three scrap processing centres at a capital infusion of around Rs 100 crore. The company plans to set up two centres at Hazira and Ahmedabad in Gujarat, and one in Khopoli, Maharashtra, a company official said on Thursday. ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel (AMNS) India is a 60:40 joint venture between Luxembourg-based global steel giant ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel of Japan. When asked about the timeline, the official said as per the plan submitted to the board of AMNS India, all the three centres are to be set up by 2024. The company owns and operates a 9 million tonne (MT) plant at Hazira where it uses 3-5 per cent of scrap to manufacture steel. Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) on Wednesday said its Gujarat-based unit has crossed 30 lakh cumulative production milestone. Suzuki Motor Gujarat (SMG) has surpassed the milestone within a span of around 6 years and 11 months since commencing operations in February 2017, MSI said in a statement. SMG has an annual production capacity of 7.5 lakh units and the vehicles manufactured at the plant are sold in both domestic as well as export markets. "With the acquisition of Suzuki Motor Gujarat, we are further enhancing our production flexibility. The production of our battery electric vehicles will also be undertaken at the Gujarat plant and is expected to start in FY 2024-25," MSI MD and CEO Hisashi Takeuchi stated. Currently, the facility rolls out some of the popular models like Swift, Baleno, Dzire and Fronx.
