Morbidly obese women are at a "much higher risk" of developing endometrial cancer compared to those with a normal body mass index, doctors at a city hospital said today. Endometrial cancer arises from the endometrium -- the lining of the uterus. The hospital today shared case studies of nine morbidly obese patients, aged 50-70 who were treated there for this type of cancer in the past few months. Two patients also shared their experiences during an interaction with the members of the press here. BMI (body mass index) is defined by the ratio of an individual's height to his or her weight. Normal BMI ranges from 20-25. People having BMI above 40 are considered morbidly obese. According to Max Institute of Cancer Care, "Endometrial cancer is becoming increasingly common in post-menopausal women, though incidence in women as young as 25 years of age have also been observed. There is a strong link between uncontrolled obesity and endometrial cancer." All nine women, whose cases were ...
A video, showing a sweeper stitching a wound on the head of an accident victim at a government hospital in Bharuch town of Gujarat, has gone viral of social media, prompting the authorities to order an inquiry. Shockingly, a similar incident had allegedly taken place at the hospital three months ago. In the video, shot by the patient's relative on August 19, the sweeper is seen stitching the wound in the presence of a woman doctor and nurses. The hospital's Resident Medical Officer S R Patel said he has ordered an inquiry and served show cause notices to the doctor, who had allegedly instructed the sweeper, a contractual employee, to stitch the wound, and other staff. Patel said this was the second such incident involving the doctor and the sweeper in the last three months, and the doctor had been warned not to ask the sweeper to stitch wounds on the previous occasion. "We have taken this matter seriously and ordered a probe into the incident. I have also issued ...
Drug firm Torrent Pharmaceuticals is recalling 14 lots of tablets used for treatment of high blood pressure and heart failure from the US market due to presence of impurity, the company said. The voluntarily recall of Valsartan/Amlodipine/HCTZ tablets to the consumer level is due to the detection of trace amounts of an unexpected impurity found in an active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) manufactured by Zhejiang Huahai Pharmaceuticals, Torrent Pharma said in a release posted on the website of US health regulator FDA (Food and Drug Administration). "The impurity detected in the API is N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), which has been classified as a probable human carcinogen as per International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classification," it added. NDMA occurs naturally in certain foods, drinking water, air pollution, and industrial processes, the release said. "To date, Torrent Pharmaceuticals Ltd has not received any reports of adverse events related to this recall," it ...

Scientists have found compounds in the human body with potent antimicrobial effects, that may lead to the development of new drugs and help leverage mankind's fight against superbugs. The human body produces many antimicrobial peptides that help the immune system fend off infection. Scientists are hoping to harness these peptides as potential antibiotics. Researchers from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US and the University of Naples Federico II in Italy found that fragments of the protein pepsinogen, an enzyme used to digest food in the stomach, can kill bacteria such as Salmonella and E coli. They believe that by modifying these peptides to enhance their antimicrobial activity, they may be able to develop synthetic peptides that could be used as antibiotics against drug-resistant bacteria. "These peptides really constitute a great template for engineering. The idea now is to use synthetic biology to modify them further and make them more potent," said Cesar de la

Vitamin B3 has the potential to prevent acute kidney injury, an often fatal condition without a specific treatment, a study has found. The condition causes a build-up of waste products in the blood and an imbalance of fluids throughout the body. Acute kidney injury, which affects up to 30-40 per cent of all hospitalised adults in low-income countries, can occur from ailments that place the body into extreme stress -- putting patients, particularly those in intensive care units, at risk. Researchers led by Samir M Parikh from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in the US discovered that levels of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) -- the end result of vitamin B3 after it is ingested-declines in cases of acute kidney injury. "We were able to detect a drop in NAD+ in the urine of high-risk patients who were either in an intensive care unit or undergoing a major surgery and found that oral vitamin B3 could safely elevate NAD+ in high-risk patients," said Parikh, who is also an ...
Nanoparticles, which are found in thousands of everyday products due to their unique properties, can form toxic cocktails harmful to our cells, a study has found. In a study published in the journal Nanotoxicology, scientists showed that 72 per cent of cells died after exposure to a cocktail of nano-silver and cadmium ions. Nanoparticles are becoming increasingly widespread in our environment. For example, silver nanoparticles have an effective antibacterial effect and can be found in refrigerators, sports clothes, cosmetics, tooth brushes, and water filters. There is a significant difference between how the cells react when exposed to nanosilver alone and when they are exposed to a cocktail of nanosilver and cadmium ions, which are naturally found everywhere around us on Earth, according to the researchers from University of Southern Denmark (SDU). In the study, 72 per cent of the cells died, when exposed to both nanosilver and cadmiun ions. When exposed to nanosilver only, 25 per ...
The Railway Board has decided to upgrade the existing breath analysers used to test the blood alcohol (BAC) levels of loco pilots, official said. The existing devices will be upgraded with the latest specifications issued by the Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO) of Indian Railways, the official said. This is expected to eliminate possible deviations in the test results. The decision to upgrade was necessitated after repeated complaints of anomalies in test results were reported in the older version. The board has also decided to do away with the second alcohol test which was done for those loco pilots whose blood alcohol levels were found to be positive after the first test. "This means that those whose BAC's are found to be positive will be directly sent for medical examination instead of a second test," the official said. According to the present norms, loco pilots of passenger and freight trains have to take the alcohol tests before and after the train journey. The .
Oral intake of vitamin B3 could potentially help prevent acute kidney injury that affects 30-40 per cent of all hospitalised adults in the low-income countries, suggests a study, led by a researcher of Indian-origin.
Eating about a quarter cup of strawberries daily can prevent colon inflammation and improve gut health, say scientists. "The sedentary lifestyle and dietary habits of many people -- high-sugar, high-animal-fat, but low-fiber diets -- may promote colonic inflammation and increase the risk of inflammatory bowel disease," said Hang Xiao, who led the study. Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a set of painful conditions that can cause severe diarrhea and fatigue. Treatments can include medications and surgery. IBD includes both Crohn's disease, which can infect any part of the gastrointestinal tract, and ulcerative colitis, which is characterised by inflammation of the colon and rectum. People with IBD also have a higher risk of colorectal cancer. The dietary consumption of fruits and vegetables has been associated with a lowered risk of IBD. To establish an effective and practical approach to decrease colonic inflammation in both IBD patients and the general population, researchers from .
