E-cigarettes -- often touted as a safer alternative to cigarette smoking -- may modify the DNA in the oral cells of users, potentially increasing the risk of cancer. Introduced to the market in 2004, e-cigarettes are handheld electronic devices that heat a liquid, usually containing nicotine, into an aerosol that the user inhales. Different flavours of liquids are available, including many that appeal to youth, such as fruit, chocolate and candy. The popularity of e-cigarettes continue to grow worldwide, but the long-term effects of e-cigarette usage, commonly called "vaping," are unknown. "We want to characterise the chemicals that vapers are exposed to, as well as any DNA damage they may cause," said Romel Dator, who presented the study in the US at the 256th National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society (ACS). According to a 2016 report by the US Surgeon General, 13.5 per cent of middle school students, 37.7 per cent of high school students and 35.8 per cent of

Did you know how beneficial are simple leg exercises while lying down? A sedentary lifestyle can cause an impairment of transportation of blood in the body which in turn may increase the risk of diseases in the heart and blood vessels.Performing simple leg exercises can make a huge change and prevent such problems, a new study reveals.Earlier work has demonstrated that prolonged sitting for up to 6 hours results in a decline in both blood flow to the limbs and in our larger arteries' ability to widen to accommodate increased blood flow. This is the first study to show that sitting for just 10 minutes is sufficient to reduce blood flow to the legs and impairs the function of small blood vessels supplying muscles in the leg. This paper also highlights a reduction in the function of small blood vessels when lying down. However, this study suggests that we might be able to reverse this impairment to some extent by performing some simple leg exercises when lying down in bed or on the ...
Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is one of the important causes of severe visual loss in the elderly population. It constitutes to 8.7% of the world population.AMD symptoms include blurred or fuzzy vision, straight lines that appear wavy or crooke, decreased contrast or colour sensitivity, difficulty seeing at a distance and/or a small but growing, blind spot in the centre of vision.Rate of depression amongst AMD patients is substantially higher than depression due to other reasons amongst the elderly population. Social isolation can arise from restrictions on mobility (such as difficulty in driving and limited walking because of the fear of falling), embarrassment about one's loss of vision etc. The vision loss resulting from AMD
If you are a diabetic with a disrupted sleep pattern, you might need more time to heal skin wounds, finds a study. The researchers at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville found that overweight mice with Type 2 diabetes and disrupted sleep needed more time to heal skin wounds than mice that also had disrupted sleep but didn't have Type 2 diabetes. These results confirm that sleep plays an especially important role in wound healing among obese mice with Type 2 diabetes. For the experiment, scientists used obese mice with features of Type 2 diabetes and compared them to healthy mice of normal weight. While deeply anesthetized, both groups of mice got a small surgical wound on the skin of their backs. The scientists analyzed how long it took the wound to heal under two scenarios: a normal sleep schedule and sleep that was repeatedly interrupted. The result: the diabetic mice with fragmented sleep needed about 13 days for their wounds to achieve 50 percent healing. By contrast, even with ...
