E-cigarettes attracting more youths towards world of tobacco

In a recent study, a group of scientists have found nonsmoking adolescents who use e-cigarettes, smokeless tobacco or tobacco water pipes are more likely to start smoking conventional cigarettes within a year.A new research by UC San Francisco, analysed data from a nationally-representative sample of more than 10,000 adolescents, ages 12 to 17, which makes it the largest study to date to estimate the impact between alternative tobacco use and the subsequent start of conventional cigarette smoking in youth.The team discovered that any form of tobacco, including e-cigarettes, was associated with future smoking, especially when adolescents used more than one product.It means that novel tobacco products have the potential to undermine public health gains in combatting smoking.Study's senior author Benjamin W. Girls menstruating before 12 at heart disease, stroke risk in adulthood

Girls who get their first period before age 12 are at increased risk of heart disease and stroke in adulthood, reveals a recent study.The findings also revealed that it increases the risk of early menopause, complications of pregnancy and hysterectomy, which seem to be associated with the subsequent cardiovascular disease.The results indicated that the women, who had periods before the age of 12 were at 10 percent greater risk of cardiovascular disease than those who had been 13 or older when they started.Researchers from the UK Biobank, a large population based study of more than half a million men and women up to the age of 69 were recruited between 2006 and 2010.The participants filled in questionnaires on their lifestyle, environment and medical history, which included a wide range of reproductive factors.They also took tests to assess their physical and functional health and provided urine, blood and saliva samples.In all, the health of 2,67,440 women and 2,15,088 men - none of ..

Pak's Punjab bans Chinese salt

Pakistan's Punjab government today banned Chinese salt after finding it hazardous for health. "The salt (Ajinomoto) contains Monosodium glutamate which is a harmful chemical and known to cause health problems like headache, heart disease and other mental and physical illnesses," the Punjab Food Authority said in a statement. It said the scientific findings show that the Chinese salt can cause headaches, fatigue, palpitations, nausea and vomiting, sweating, flushing and numbness of the face. "It can also cause hypertension and is extremely hazardous for pregnant women," the statement said, imposing an immediate ban on the usage of Ajinomoto in all eateries, frozen foods, and all other food products in the province of 100 million people. Interestingly, the Chinese salt (Ajinomoto) has been in use in Punjab and other parts of the country for decades.

Over 92% people don't trust healthcare system in India: Study

Over 92 per cent people do not trust healthcare system in India, with hospital being the most distrusted organisation followed by Pharma and insurance companies, as per annual survey by fitness device firm GOQii. "As per the GOQii India Fit 2018 report, 92.3% of citizens do not trust the healthcare system in India, which includes doctors, hospitals, pharma, insurance companies and diagnostic labs," the survey said. The survey claims to have used inputs from about 2 lakh GoQii product users in the country. As per the survey, 74 per cent people said that they do not trust hospitals, followed by pharma and insurance firms (62.8 per cent), medical clinics (52.6 per cent), 50.6 per cent doctors and diagnostic labs (46.1 per cent). Ex-Union minister Raghunath Jha passes away

Former Union minister Raghunath Jha passed away at the Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital here in the early hours today. The 78-year-old Jha died due to various health complications, including a multi-organ failure and a septic shock, according to the hospital authorities. "He was admitted with a septic shock and multi-organ failure. He succumbed to his illness at 3.10 AM," RML Hospital medical superintendent Dr V K Tiwari said. He added that Jha was also suffering from hypertension, diabetis, chronic hepatitis and a chronic kidney disease and that he was on maintenance haemodialysis. Jha was admitted to the ICU of the hospital on January 13. Born on August 9, 1939, Jha was the Union minister of state for heavy industries and public enterprise in the UPA government, led by former prime minister Manmohan Singh, as a Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) representative. In 2015, he had quit the RJD to join the Samajwadi Party (SP).

Glenmark gets nod for phase II study of novel molecule

Glenmark Pharmaceuticals today said it has received nod from Directorate General of Health Services, Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation, to conduct study for evaluating safety and efficacy of its novel molecule GRC 27864 in patients with osteoarthritic pain. The company has been granted permission to conduct a Phase IIb dose range finding study to evaluate safety and efficacy of GRC 27864 in patients with moderate osteoarthritic pain, Glenmark Pharmaceuticals said in a statement. "We are excited that GRC 27864 is moving forward in clinical development and this validates our focus and commitment to develop potential first-in-class molecules," Glenmark Pharmaceuticals Chairman and MD Glenn Saldanha said. In spite of several available treatment options, there is significant unmet medical need in chronic pain, he added. HC asks Maha to frame guidelines for emergency organ donation

The Bombay High Court today directed the Maharashtra government to frame guidelines to deal with emergency situations related to organ donation and retrieval. A bench of justices Naresh Patil and N W Sambre said the government should "frame guidelines and constitute a team of medical experts" to suggest ways during emergency situations. The court's direction came on a petition filed before it by Swapnil Raut, who suffers from a kidney-related ailment. The plea focused on an incident at a Mumbai hospital, where another patient, who suffered from a similar issue as Raut, was awaiting kidney donation from a brain-dead patient. The patient lost out on receiving the organ since the potential donor died of a cardiac arrest, the plea said. The hospital could not retrieve organs after the donor's death since the facility's licence for organ transplant had been suspended a few years ago, the plea said. Govt needs to increase healthcare outlay in budget: Report

Public sector accounts for only 30 per cent of the total healthcare expenditure in the country and investment in building and maintaining public health infrastructure needs priority in the forthcoming budget for FY 2018-19, a report says. Public sector investment on healthcare accounts for less than 1.5 per cent of GDP, which is one of the lowest globally, and the government intends to increase the expenditure to 2.5 per cent of GDP by 2025. The outlay on healthcare increased by a healthy 28 per cent in the last budget and the allocation is likely to see a similar increase in the forthcoming budget as well, according to a report by rating agency Icra. Veteran journalist NK Trikha passes away

Veteran journalist NK Trikha passed away this afternoon at All India Institute of Medical Sciences here after a prolonged illness. According to his family, the 82-year-old was suffering from blood cancer and had undergone an open heart surgery in April last year. He is survived by his wife, two sons and a grandson. Trikha had worked at the Times of India Group's Hindi newspaper 'Navbharat Times' for a long time and was also the editor of its Lucknow edition. UP: Two women killed in hospital fire

Two women patients were today killed after being trapped in the fire that broke out in ICU of a private hospital here on Stadium road, police said. The fire broke out in the wee hours in which patients Rajbala (32) and Mangla Devi (41) died, they said. Acting District Magistrate OP Verma has ordered a magisterial probe into the incident "The bodies of victims have been sent for postmortem and FIR has been lodged against hospital owner and its management at Baradari police station," Superintendent of Police (City) Rohit Singh Sajwan said. According to the Hospital owner Sharad Agarwal, there were three patients in the ICU and hospital tried to shift them but because the family members started fighting with the staff, they fled away. 34 cases of scrub typus infection reported in Mizoram

At least 34 cases of scrub typus infection have been reported from Haulawng village in Mizoram's Lunglei district, officials said today. State Nodal officer of the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) Dr Pachuau Lalmalsawma told PTI that a team of doctors was sent to Haulawng village where at least 34 cases of scrub typus infection have been reported but no death have taken place due to the infection. Scrub typhus is a mite-borne disease caused by Orientia tsutsugamushi (formerly Rickettsia tsutsugamushi). Symptoms are fever, a primary lesion, a macular rash, and lymphadenopathy. Lalmalsawma said the first case of scrub typus infection was reported from Haulawng village in southern Lunglei district during early part of this month. Earlier, one person died and 81 people were infected with scrub typhus in Aizawl district's Phullen and surrounding villages like Luangpawn, Thanglailung and Zawngin in December last year.
