State-run student hostels to have modern infrastructure: Jharkhand CM

Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren on Tuesday promised modern infrastructure in students' hostels across the state, during a programme organised at Ranchi College on the occasion of Karma festival. He said that all hostels run by the welfare department in the state are being renovated to provide facilities on par with private ones. "It is our endeavour to provide multi-storey hostels equipped with modern infrastructure for students in cities like Ranchi, Dhanbad and Jamshedpur," the CM said. Urging people to protect their culture and tradition, Soren said nature worship is an intrinsic part of tribal culture. "It is a matter of pride for us that our ancestors have taught us nature worship," he said. Tribals have made the biggest contribution in protecting environment, he said, adding that the world today faces problems like global warming on account of not maintaining ecological balance. Karma festival, marking the period of harvest, was celebrated across Jharkhand with tradit

Attempts being made to destabilise elected govts: Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren

Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren on Monday alleged that the BJP was attempting to destabilise democratically elected governments in states not ruled by it, as he tabled a confidence motion in the assembly. Soren also claimed that his Assam counterpart Himanta Biswa Sarma indulged in purchase of Jharkhand MLAs. The saffron party is trying to destabilise democratically elected governments in non-BJP ruled states... The Assam CM had also attempted to purchase Jharkhand legislators, Soren said in the assembly, amid protests by opposition members, who trooped into the well of the House, shouting slogans. Soren alleged that the BJP was trying to create a civil war-like situation in the country by fueling riots to win elections. He had earlier in the day said in the assembly that opposition BJP's attempt to poach MLAs had prompted the move for a confidence motion.

Shocked over selective leaks by Raj Bhavan on Soren's fate as MLA: UPA team

A delegation of ruling UPA leaders in Jharkhand told Governor Ramesh Bais on Thursday that it was shocked over the "selective leaks made" from Raj Bhavan on Election Commission's recommendation, as speculation continued to be rife over Chief Minister Hemant Soren's disqualification as MLA. The delegation, in a representation to Bais, said such leaks created chaos and confusion. It also asked the governor to clear the air over the ECI recommendation in the matter. Earlier in the week, 32 MLAs of the ruling coalition in Jharkhand left for Raipur by a chartered flight from Ranchi in a bid to thwart possible poaching attempts by the BJP amid the deepening political crisis in the state over Soren's fate as an MLA. Four of them, however, returned on Wednedsay night to take part in a cabinet meeting. The delegation, during its visit to Raj Bhavan, also said that speculations on Soren's fate "encouraged political brinkmanship to destabilize the democratically elected government". It asse

Golf resort near Raipur turns into fortress as Jharkhand MLAs check in

Away from the bustling crowds of Raipur city, the Mayfair Golf Resort where MLAs of the ruling UPA coalition in Jharkhand are sequestered has turned into a fortress with police personnel deployed everywhere. The JMM-Congress-RJD coalition in Jharkhand on Tuesday flew its 32 MLAs to Raipur to prevent the BJP's alleged attempts to poach its legislators. The MLAs, 15 from the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha and 17 from Congress, accompanied by senior Chhattisgarh Congress leaders Ramgopal Agrawal and Girish Dewangan, travelled in three buses to the luxurious resort located in Nava Raipur. While mediapersons are camping in the area in scorching heat in their quest for news and visuals, their entry is strictly barred inside. All 40-odd rooms at the resort have been booked for the guests from Jharkhand for the next two days, Congress sources said. A video of an SUV with 'Chhattisgarh government on duty' written on it and carrying liquor bottles allegedly towards the resort went viral during the

Jharkhand Governor to take call on 'disqualification' of Soren as MLA today

Jharkhand Governor Ramesh Bais may take a call Friday on the Election Commission's view on disqualification of Chief Minister Hemant Soren as an MLA, amid the rapidly changing political scenario in the state, Raj Bhavan sources said. The EC is believed to have told the governor that Soren should be "disqualified" as a legislator for violating electoral norms, they said. However, the Raj Bhavan has officially not confirmed the development. The ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), as part of the UPA alliance, exuded confidence that Soren will remain as the chief minister till 2024. The party also said it will move the Supreme Court if Soren is disqualified as an MLA. Bais had told reporters that he would be in a position to comment on the issue once he took stock of developments. "I was in AIIMS, Delhi for two days. I will be in a position to tell about any such decision when I reach Raj Bhavan," he had said after arriving here on Thursday. The Election Commission sent its opinion

No communication received: Jharkhand CM's office on EC's letter to Governor

Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren on Thursday alleged blatant misuse of constitutional authorities and public agencies after reports claimed that the Election Commission recommended his disqualification as an MLA in the mining lease case. No communication in this regard has been received by the Chief Minister's Office from either the Election Commission or Governor Ramshe Bains, his secretariat said. "It apparently seems that BJP leaders including a BJP MP and his puppet journalists have themselves drafted the ECI report, which is otherwise a sealed cover report," Soren said in a statement issued by his secretariat. "This blatant misuse of constitutional authorities and public agencies and its complete takeover by BJP HQ in Deendayal Upadhay Marg in this shameful manner is unseen in Indian Democracy," he said. The chief minister is apprised of several media reports about ECI sending a report to the governor "apparently recommending his disqualification as a MLA", his office ...

Hemant Soren will remain Jharkhand CM for full term till 2024: JMM

Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) on Thursday asserted that Hemant Soren will remain the chief minister for full term till 2024, and demanded legal action against BJP leaders for disclosing a reported official decision despite no confirmation from either ECI or Raj Bhavan. The Election Commission of India (ECI) is believed to have told Jharkhand Governor Ramesh Bais that Soren should be disqualified as an MLA for violating electoral norms by extending a mining lease to himself, Raj Bhavan sources said. However, Raj Bhavan has officially not confirmed the development. Wondering why the ECI was silent over the violation of the Official Secrets Act, the JMM urged the commission to take suo moto cognisance against BJP MP Nishikant Dubey and other saffron party leaders for allegedly disrespecting the Constitution. Exuding confidence that Soren will remain the chief minister till 2024, JMM general secretary and spokesperson Supriyo Bhattacharya said Soren will complete his full term and fulfi
