Eight injured, four critical in shooting at Minneapolis homeless camp

Eight people have been wounded, including four with critical injuries, in a shooting at a homeless camp on private property in Minneapolis, police said. The shooting happened just hours after and blocks away from another shooting that left five injured near a transit station as city officials acknowledge a spate of recent violent crime in the area. Those shootings come during a particularly violent summer for the Minneapolis area. That includes the assassination of Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband in their home, as well as the shooting of another state lawmaker and his wife the same day in June. A mass shooting at a Minneapolis church in late August killed two children and injured 21 others. Police learned of the shooting at the homeless encampment around 10 pm Monday when an off-duty officer working at a nearby retail store was approached by people running from the camp and reporting gunfire, Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara said in a news conference ..

British PM Rishi Sunak faces potential revolt over new homelessness law

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak faces a potential revolt from within his party ranks over new legislation that is set to criminalise homelessness and hand police powers to crack down on rough sleepers on the country's streets. According to a report in The Times' on Monday, several Conservative Party MPs have warned that they will vote against the measures in the Criminal Justice Bill, which is currently going through the House of Commons and set to become law before a general election expected later this year. The proposals, which had been unveiled by former Indian-origin home secretary Suella Braverman, would mean rough sleepers in England and Wales could be fined as much as 2,500 Pounds or face prison terms. A lot of colleagues believe that the bill as it stands is completely unacceptable because it would have the effect of criminalising people who have no choice but to sleep on the streets. We are urging ministers to think again, said Tory MP Bob Blackman, who is also joint ..

UP govt launches 'Elder Line' to give shelter to elderly homeless

The Uttar Pradesh social welfare department has come up with an 'Elder Line' 14567 service to rescue aged destitute and help them find shelter in old age homes. The initiative is a brain child of Minister of state (Independent Charge) for Social Welfare Asim Arun, who had earlier headed the emergency helpline 112 as an Additional Director General. An MLA from Kannauj constituency, Asim Arun told PTI said the aim of the helpline was to shift the destitute elderly to old age homes and the hotline became active earlier in the week. "If you find such destitute elderly persons on a road side, bus station, railway station or any similar place, who should be in an old age home, then you can share that information with elder line 14567. The department's team will reach the spot, and bring the elderly to an old age home with full respect," Arun said. Pavan Kumar, the Director of UP Social welfare department, told PTI that at present there are 75 old age homes in the state with one in each .

Los Angeles govt taps hotel rooms as around 40,000 people homeless

The new mayor of Los Angeles, Karen Bass, has said her administration will start moving homeless people from tent encampments into hotels and motels through a new program that launches Tuesday. Bass told NBC's Meet the Press host, Chuck Todd, on Sunday that her plan to move homeless people into rooms immediately will not address everybody, but it is going to address, hopefully, a significant number. She said people will not be forced to move, but that sanitation crews will stand by to clean up areas after people have left. But this is not coercing people. This is not ticketing people or incarcerating people. This is moving people from tents to hotels or motels, she said. On her first day as mayor of Los Angeles, Bass declared a state of emergency on homelessness. She vowed to get people housed and more housing built so that residents can see a real difference, which hasn't been visible despite billions spent on programs to curb homelessness, including USD 1.2 billion in the current
