In an attempt to improve on-board services and redress passengers' grievances, South Eastern Railway has introduced 'Train Captains' in three premium trains run by it, an SER spokesman said here today. The trains in which captains have been introduced are Howrah-Yesvantpur Duronto Express, Howrah-Mumbai Duronto Express and Howrah-Pune Duronto Express. "The services of train captain will be gradually extended to all other premium trains originating from South Eastern Railway within a short time," SER spokesman Sanjoy Ghosh said. The Howrah-Yesvantpur Duronto Express that left Howrah yesterday was the first such train with a captain to oversee the requirements and for redressal of passengers' grievances. Ghosh said that the train captain would be the overall in-charge of the train from beginning to end of journey and responsible for ensuring passenger amenities including availability of water, cleanliness of coaches and working of electrical fittings.

Japanese technology conglomerate SoftBank is investing in a mobile device service for hotel guests, called handy Japan, that offers information on tourist attractions and internet access. Terms of the deal, announced today, were not disclosed. Handy, developed by Hong Kong-based Tink Labs, is available in 650,000 rooms in 4,000 hotels in 82 countries. It rolled out in Japan last July and has been adopted by 1,700 hotels and 240,000 rooms, about a third of the nation's hotels, both sides said. Handy works as a smartphone rental that's a complimentary hotel service. The device can contact a hotel's concierge, link to the internet and make local and international calls. Passengers of Puri-Sealdah Duronto Express today complained of "undercooked" food served by the onboard caterer, following which the IRCTC decided not to renew its contract with the company responsible for supplying food in the train. Stating that strict punitive action will be taken against the caterer, IRCTC group general manager (east zone) Debasish Chanda said an enquiry has been ordered into the complaints by the passengers of the train, which arrived at Sealdah this morning. "The food was served in the south central zone of IRCTC at Puri. On receiving complaints over the quality and standard of the food served last night, we have decided to not renew the contract of the catering company," Chanda said. The Gujarat government is looking to promote tourism by developing beaches in the state and modelling them on those in Israel. Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, who is leading a high-profile delegation from Gujarat on a six-day trip to Israel, told PTI here that the state has "the potential to develop beaches like here and in Goa which can promote tourism". A close aide to the chief minister in the delegation said they were impressed by how the beaches were planned in Israel. This is the third such honour for the metropolis after the Elephanta Caves and the majestic Victoria Terminus, rechristened Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus railway station. Maharashtra government has constituted a committee under the chairmanship of the principal secretary (tourism) to implement and monitor schemes under Tourism Policy 2016 and facilitate investments in the state. Under the new project planning, implementation and monitoring committee, the principal pecretary will also supervise single window clearance for the hospitality industry and live events in Maharashtra. An events and exhibitions board will be created to facilitate and promote MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences and events) in the state. "The committee has been set up to enable faster clearance of viable tourism proposals. It will scrutinise the proposals and after it gets clearances, it will be implemented and we will monitor them," Vijay Kumar Gautam, principal secretary, tourism, who is heading the committee, told PTI here. The committee will also have representatives of state planning department, representatives of finance department, Maharashtra Tourism .
