Kerala registers healthy increase in tourist footfalls

Kerala registered a healthy increase in domestic and foreign tourist arrivals last year because of initiatives launched by the state government, a tourism department official said here today. "We have achieved 11.39 per cent increase in domestic tourist arrivals and 5.15 per cent increase in international tourist arrivals in 2017 compared to previous year," Nandakumar K P, joint director, Department of Tourism, Kerala, said during a programme organised to promote Kerala Tourism. He said domestic tourist arrivals last year was 1.47 crore, while 10.38 lakh foreign tourists visited the state. To reach out to the domestic market, a string of 'partnership meets' are being organised in Mumbai, Pune, Jaipur, Chandigarh, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam, Chennai, Kolkata, Patna and New Delhi in the first quarter of 2018. Central Railway gets new Bombardier rake with AC driver cabins

Top Indian hotelier in Nepal arrested for drug trafficking

A top Indian hotelier in Nepal who was wanted by the Interpol, was today arrested on charges of drugs trafficking. Masur Ahmad Lary was arrested from Maharajgunj area of Kathmandu, said a senior police officer of Kathmandu Metropolitan Police Office. The police was searching the hotelier after narcotic drugs were found inside a parcel dispatched by him from Kathmandu to the Netherlands during a security check at Frankfurt Airport in Germany, police said. Lary is the owner of Kathmandu's five-star Everest Hotel, which remained closed after its building developed major cracks in 2015 earthquakes. He has been operating the hotel in Kathmandu for the last 30 years. Police has filed a case on drugs trafficking against Lary in Kathmandu District Court after taking him into custody.

India retains top spot as source market for Dubai in 2017

Dubai witnessed 15 per cent growth in tourist arrivals from India in 2017, hosting 2.1 million visitors, retaining top spot as the source market. It also became the first country to cross the 2 million mark in a single year, according to the latest data published by Dubais Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (Dubai Tourism). The growth is mainly due to the success of Dubai Tourism's ongoing collaboration with Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan in the 'BeMyGuest' campaign. Overall, Dubai recorded 6.2 per cent year-on-year increase in international overnight visitation in 2017, propelling the emirate's momentum towards its 2020 goal of welcoming 20 million visitors per year by the start of the next decade. 2.1 million Indians visited Dubai in 2017

A record 2.1 million Indians visited Dubai in 2017, marking a 15 per cent increase in the number of travellers from India, according to official figures. South Asia emerged as the number one source of tourists for Dubai, with hordes of Indian visitors, amounting to 2.1 million, arriving in the emirate last year, up by 15 per cent from 12 months earlier, Gulf news quoted data published by the Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (Dubai Tourism) as saying. Dubai is nearing its 2020 tourism target as it welcomed a total of 15.79 million visitors last year, up by 6.2 per cent over a year earlier, the report said. The increase in the number of Indians is partly due to Dubai Tourism's ongoing collaboration with Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan in the multi-awarded #BeMyGuest campaign, the report said. Saudi Arabia was the second-largest contributor of tourists to Dubai at 1.53 million. The Kingdom remained the highest driver of visitor traffic from within the Gulf .

TN Raj Bhavan to remain open to visitors on all days

Aimed at serving a larger audience, the doors of the official residence of Governor of Tamil Nadu, Raj Bhavan here would be open for public on all days of the week. An official release from Raj Bhavan today said it has been decided to keep the gates open for visitors on all days between 4.30 and 5.30pm. Earlier, public were allowed to visit Raj Bhavan on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. The tour at the sprawling campus located in Guindy would commence from tomorrow and visitors can get a glimpse of the Durbar Hall, the place where swearing-in of Ministers takes place, it said. An Indian pilgrim died on a trip to the Madar Baba's main shrine in Nepal's Nawalparasi district on Wednesday.The deceased, Bharat Chandra Patel (50), hailed from Khajuriya village of Maharajganj District in Uttar Pradesh.The police confirmed that he died while climbing a hilltop on the way to the main shrine of Madar Baba.The shrine lies around nine kilometres north of the Mahalbari, Susta rural municipality-2 in Nawalparasi District in Nepal.A big religious fair takes place at the shrine during this time of the year.
