Tourism Ministry launches events calendar app for tourists
Information about festivals and events at tourism sites across the country is now at one's fingertips, with Union Minister of State for Tourism K J ALphons launching mobile app -- Incredible India Digital Calendar-2018. The application is like a planner and is available on Android and iOS platforms. "This digital calendar can also be used as a personal planner. It has information on festivals and events happening in the country and will also allow user to create and manage personal events, get regular notifications on upcoming festivals and events, allow set up of customise reminders for individual events and share with their contacts," the tourism ministry said. The minister also launched The Incredible India Desk Calendar - 2018, which profiles 12 different kinds of travellers and suggests appropriate destinations for them. The theme of the desk calendar is "India for Everyone", showcasing the country's incredible tourist destinations.

A village in Uttar Pradesh has started giving toilets saffron colour.Kripalpur village is in Samajwadi Party (SP) chief and former Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav's home district Etawah.Village Pradhan (head) Ved Pal has got toilets painted in saffron colour, raising some eyebrows in the political circles."They (Bharatiya Janata Party) have government in Uttar Pradesh and at the Centre. Royal Enfield today launched a new version of its adventure touring model Himalayan, at an introductory price of Rs 2,12,666 (on-road Chennai). The first 500 units of the new product, Himalayan Sleet will come pre-fitted with Explorer Kit, an assortment of Royal Enfield genuine motorcycle accessories, the company said in a statement. These fully-kitted motorcycles will be exclusively available online for a limited period from January 12-30, it added. Interested buyers will have to register through the company's website and sales will go live on January 30 on a first-come-first-serve basis, Royal Enfield said. "The new Himalayan Sleet is inspired by the terrain of Royal Enfield's spiritual home - the Himalayas, its craggy land, the gorges, edgy peaks all brought together in the colours of the sleet," Royal Enfield President Rudratej Singh said.

Int'l balloon festival kicks off
Giant hot-air balloons from various countries including the US, France and Germany are among the attractions at the 4th International Balloon Festival 2018 being held at nearby Pollachi. Competitors from 12 countries are taking part in the festival, organised by Tamil Nadu Tourism Department, official sources said today. The department has showcased various balloons include some depicting 'Angry Birds.' About 50,000 visitors are expected to attend the festival which began last night and will conclude on January 16, sources said. The festival is aimed to promote Pollachi as a major tourist spot, they added.

Armed robbers seize jewels worth '4 million euros' from Paris
Armed robbers launched a spectacular raid on the world-famous Ritz hotel in Paris, making off with an estimated four million euros worth of jewels, the latest in a string of high-profile heists in the French capital. The gang of five men armed with hatchets smashed display windows on the ground floor of the hotel in Paris' luxurious Place Vendome around 6:30 pm (1730 GMT), making off with the jewels. Three of the gang were detained while fleeing the scene and an AFP journalist said some roads around the hotel were sealed off by security forces following the incident. Kamala Mills fire: Owner of '1 Above' restaurant arrested
Mumbai police arrested the owner of '1 Above' resto bar, Abhijeet Mankar on Thursday, in connection with the massive fire in Mumbai's Kamala Mills that claimed the lives of 14 people last month.Mankar had been absconding since the incident.One Wednesday, two other absconding owners of the restaurant, brothers Jigar Sanghvi and Kripesh Sanghvi were arrested on the information provided by a Juhu-based hotelier Vishal Kariya, who was arrested the same day for sheltering the duo along with Mankar.The police had also recovered a high-end car of accused Mankar from the Juhu residence of Kariya (42), who was then picked up for questioning.During the interrogation, the hotelier revealed that he sheltered the trio at his residence.Kariya had been booked under Section 216 of the Indian Penal Code.On January 6, '1 Above' was found to have flouted the fire safety measures issued by the Mumbai Fire Brigade, which led to the fire on December 29.Yug Pathak, one of the owners of Mojo's Bistro and the

Assam gears up for harvest festival 'Magh Bihu'
People of Guwahati are all geared up to celebrate the much-awaited harvest festival 'Magh Bihu' on January 15.Magh Bihu is one of the most important festivals in Assam, which falls in the local month of 'Magh' during mid-January.It is also called 'Bhogali Bihu' as it is celebrated with community feasts after the annual harvest.The highlight of this festival is the food which is made from the abundance of grains after the harvest.The night before 'Magh Bihu' is called 'Uruka' meaning the night of feasts.The villagers make bamboo huts called 'Bhelaghor' or community kitchen where they begin with the preparations.Various dishes made of vegetables, meat and sweets such as Pitha, Laru are made out of sesame, molasses (black syrup from sugarcane) and coconut are prepared.The festival is marked mainly by feasts and bonfires.

British expatriates based in France have set a new takeaway trend for Indian food by chartering a flight to deliver their curry from the UK. The flight, dubbed "Curry Air" by local media, will deliver popular dishes from the Akash Tandoori Restaurant in Portsmouth at a charge of around 36 euros per head to Bordeaux on Saturday. Curry Air is booked to take off from Lee-on-Solent airfield on the south coast of England with Chicken Tikka Masala, Lamb Balti, Bengal Naga Chicken and Vegetable Paneer Korai, alongside rice and naan. Seeking to attract more Dutch visitors to India, a holiday fair showcasing major Indian tourist destinations is being held in the Netherlands' city of Utrecht. Mayor of Utrecht, Jan van Zanen inaugurated the 'Incredible India' and Kerala tourism exhibitions yesterday, a statement by the Indian Embassy here said. Among the attractions, is a virtual reality tour of India's select tourism spots for visitors to the 'Vakantiebeurs' fair. The mayor was the first to view major Indian tourist attractions in 'virtual reality' - a novel initiative by the Indian mission in collaboration with India's tourism department, it said. Shanghai installs first 3D printed bus stops
Shanghai has installed the world's first 3D-printed bus stops in an ancient town which is part of the city, according to a media report. The bus shelters have a unique closed loop design, and two-round stools are set inside the grey rectangle frame. The original print marks still remain, allowing observers to see how the structure was made layer-by-layer, state-run People's Daily reported. The grey coloured raw materials are environmentally friendly and renewable materials recycled from demolished buildings. They were chosen to naturally fit the style of the ancient town of Fengjing, Shanghai, the report said. The structures have attracted interest, as there were no bus stops like that before, only bus stop signs, it said.
