HC initiates PIL to look into Karol Bagh hotel fire
The Delhi High Court sought response of the AAP government, police and the fire department on Tuesday on a PIL it has initiated to look into the recent fire at a hotel here which claimed 17 lives. A bench of Chief Justice Rajendra Menon and Justice V K Rao issued notice to the Delhi government, police, fire department, North Delhi Municipal Corporation and Hotel Arpit Palace, where the incident occurred, and sought their replies on whether the establishment in question was functioning in violation of licensing norms. The court decided to take up the issue as a PIL after it received a letter from Tushar Sahdev and Raman Kalra, who had claimed that the hotel, located in Karol Bagh area of the national capital, was not complying with the Supreme Court directions to have more than one exit and entry point. Nepal expects more Everest climbers after China sets limits
Nepal is expecting more climbers to try to scale its side of Mount Everest in coming weeks after China said it would limit attempts from the northern side, officials said Tuesday. Danduraj Ghimire of Nepal's Tourism Department said it expects more climbers than usual will apply for climbing permits during the spring climbing season that begins later this week. Some 563 climbers scaled the 8,850-meter peak from Nepal's southern side in 2018. The spring climbing season, when weather conditions are best on the world's highest peak, begins March 1 and ends May 31. China said in January it would reduce the number of climbers by one-third this year as part of plans for a major cleanup of the mountain that straddles the border between the countries. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un left the comfort of his luxury Hanoi hotel Tuesday to visit his embassy, hours after he arrived in Vietnam for his summit with US President Donald Trump. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's train arrived in Vietnam Tuesday ahead of his second summit with US President Donald Trump in Hanoi. The olive green train pulled into Vietnam's Dong Dang station after a marathon 4,000 kilometre (2,500 mile), two and a half day journey across China from Pyongyang. Kim is expected to drive to the Vietnamese capital where he will have a state visit.
NMR coaches to get makeover
The Southern Railway is all set to replace the four-decade-old coaches of its Nilgiris Mountain Railway with a new set of modern stainless steel coaches which will have cushioned seats and large windowpanes to offer travellers a panoramic view throughout the mountain journey. The first rake, comprising 146 seats spread across four coaches, was rolled out Monday, the Integral Coach Factory said in a statement The coaches are also fitted with LED lights. Totally, 15 coaches are being planned to be manufactured by ICF for the NMR, according to the statement. The other upgrades to the UNESCO-listed railway system include hand brakes for pinion and wheels, separate space for PWD (persons with disability) passengers to place their wheel chair and sit in it. The train runs between Mettupalayam and Udhagamandalam in Tamil Nadu.
Tourism Dept launches programme to train guides
: The Kerala Tourism Department has launched a programme to create a pool of trained tourist guides with a firm understanding of the job and excellent proficiency in languages. This will be held in association with the state-run Kerala Institute of Tourism and Travel Studies (KITTS) here, a press release said. The course is formulated to make up shortage of well trained guides to cope up with the ever-increasing flow of foreign and domestic tourists to the state. The programme will be inaugurated by state Tourism Minister Kadakampally Surendran on February 27. Dr Shashi Tharoor, MP, will deliver the key-note address at the function. The programme aims at training 150 licensed regional guides and 50 state level guides. AP: Police seize hookah pots at Tirumala
A major security lapse came to light in Tirumala town of Chittor district, after the police on Sunday seized a couple of hookah pots from a group of devotees from Punjab. The incident revealed the lack of improper checking taking place at Alipiri toll gate.The defaulters were caught red-handed after the guest staying in the next room of the hotel became suspicious about the presence of banned item and immediately dialed the police.The consumption of tobacco and alcohol is banned in Tirumala.The officials immediately rushed to the spot and seized hookah pots.Circle Inspector Venkateswarlu informed ANI that a case will be filed for bringing tobacco-related products on to the Tirumala hill.

Dubai sees slight tourism rise in 2018
Dubai welcomed a record 15.92 million tourists in 2018, the tourism authority said Sunday, but the rise was marginal due to drops in visitors from the Gulf, India and Britain. The number of international visitors last year grew by just 0.8 per cent, far below the five per cent and six per cent rises in 2016 and 2017 respectively, Dubai Tourism said. But the emirate remains "focused on ensuring that (it) becomes the number one most visited city in the world", said Dubai Tourism chief Saeed al-Marri in a statement. Declines in the numbers of Gulf tourists, mainly from Oman and Qatar, and among Indian and British visitors were balanced out by upticks in the number of Chinese and Russians. The drop in Gulf visitors comes after the United Arab Emirates along with three other Arab countries in June 2017 boycotted GCC member Qatar. By country, Indian tourists came in first place with two million despite a slight drop from the previous year, followed by Saudis who increased marginally to 1.6 .

Oman is expecting a double-digit growth in the number of tourist arrivals from India, its second-highest source market, in 2019 as it hard-sells the country as preferred destination here. The Sultanate of Oman recorded a 12.37 per cent growth in Indian tourist arrivals in 2018 with 3,57,147 travellers, against 3,17,844 in 2017, making India the second-highest source market for the country, Oman's Ministry of Tourism said in a statement. "Our plans are to achieve double-digit growth in the number of Indian tourist arrivals during the year 2019," Lubaina Sheerazi, India representative of Oman's Ministry of Tourism, said.
