Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate India's longest rail-road Bogibeel Bridge in Assam on Tuesday, December 25.The foundation stone of this bridge was laid down by late Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in the year 2002, therefore it is being inaugurated on his birth anniversary.Speaking to ANI, Railway PRO Nirpen Bhattacharya said, "This Bridge is the longest in India and is 4.94 km long. People would not know that this bridge is jointless. Latest technology has been used in constructing it. People of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam are going to benefit from it as north and south banks of river Brahmaputra will be connected."Bhattacharya further said that it took 21 years to construct the bridge.Manoj, a local told ANI, "This bridge will become a lifeline for us. People will now be able to access basic facilities at all points of time. Initially it was not possible to travel with boats after sunset."The first train on the bridge will start at around 11 am on Tuesday.

Bogibeel, Asia's second longest rail-cum-road bridge that will be opened to traffic by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday, has a serviceable period of around 120 years, senior officials said here. The 4.9 km-long Bogibeel Bridge on the Bramhaputra river is India's only fully welded bridge for which european codes and welding standards were adhered to for the first time in the country, said Chief Engineer Mohinder Singh. Singh said a fully welded bridge has a low maintenance cost. The bridge, constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 5,900 crore, has a "serviceable period of around 120 years", he said. The bridge reduces travel time from Assam to Arunachal Pradesh to four hours and will cut out the detour of over 170 km via Tinsukia. It will also reduce Delhi to Dibrugarh train-travel time by about three hours to 34 hours as against 37 hours presently. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railways (DHR) for the first time has started evening toy train services for enabling tourists to experience the joy ride during the second half of the day, officials said. The toy train service had been exposing tourists to the magical beauty of the Himalayas for more than a century. Now the visitors will be able to enjoy the natural beauty of the mountainous landscape while taking the evening ride. The new service was introduced last week, North East Frontier Railway spokesman Pranav Jyoti Sharma said here. "The evening service will provide an opportunity to tourists at Siliguri and its adjoining areas to experience the ride, which earned the UNESCO World Heritage tag in 1999, during second half of the day," Sharma said. The train leaves Siliguri at 3 pm to reach Rongtong at 4.20 pm and it stops at Sukna for 10 minutes so the tourists could visit the museum, he said. The year is going to end on a sweet note for the people of Kolkata as a three-day 'rosogolla' festival is being organized in the city to pay tribute to its inventor Nobin Chandra Das. Bengal had last year received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag for the round-shaped syrupy sweet. The three-day gala, beginning December 28, will celebrate 150 years of 'rosogolla' invention, said West Bengal minister Sashi Panja. Two wheels of a coach attached to the Neral-Matheran toy train derailed Friday morning, but no passenger was injured in the fourth such incident this year, a Central Railway official said. The toy train, popular with tourists, connects Neral, a town on Mumbai's outskirts, to Matheran, a hill station in adjoining Raigad district. The train travels the 21km distance in around 2 hours. "The incident took place at 10.35 am when the toy train was between Jumma Patti-Waterpipe stations. Our engineers chipped in swiftly and re-railed the wheels at 11.50 am," said the official. There were no injuries to any passenger and the toy train later resumed its service, he said. This was the fourth toy train derailment this year. There has been growth of up to 25 per cent in Indians travelling during winters compared to last year with beach destinations and deserts remaining popular during this season, according to industry experts. "There has been a substantial increase in the number of people travelling during Christmas and New Year. We have witnessed about 25 per cent more Indians opting to travel during this period. There has been a remarkable year-on-year increase in travel bookings from tier II and III cities for international travel," MakeMyTrip group CMO Saujanya Shrivastava told PTI here. The Railways' fastest train - Train 18, which is scheduled to be flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 29, was pelted with stones on Thursday during a trial run between Delhi and Agra, a senior official said. The Maharashtra cabinet Thursday decided to waive the stamp duty and registration fees for the leave and license agreement for the construction of late Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray's memorial in central Mumbai. The state government has given the Mayor's bungalow at Shivaji Park on a 30-year lease for the proposed memorial. At the cabinet meeting held on Thursday, the cabinet approved a proposal to waive the stamp duty and registration fees for leave and license agreement for the project. The government and the local civic body have leased an area measuring 11,551 sq metres for one rupee per annum for the construction of the Thackeray memorial. The Bal Thackeray Memorial Trust headed by Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray was constituted and a plot of land in Dadar, which currently hosts the mayor's bungalow, belonging to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) was given to the trust on lease for construction of a memorial.
