Since opening for the public on November 1, the 182-metre tall Statue of Unity in Narmada district of Gujarat has attracted more than 1.28 lakh tourists, officials said. A huge rush of tourists was seen during the weekend, with over 50,000 people visiting the world's tallest statue at Kevadiya village on Saturday and Sunday alone (November 10- 11), they said. "Since November 1, when the statue opened for the public, we have recieved around 1.28 lakh tourists (till Sunday)," Superintending Engineer of Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Ltd (SSNNL) R G Kanungo said. Over 24,000 tourists visited the site Sunday and more than 27,000 Saturday, he said. The national permit vehicles can now ply without two drivers, the government said Saturday. Besides, there is also no requirement of having dark brown body colour for such vehicles, as was mandatory earlier with amendment in Central Motor Vehicles Rules. "The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has made amendments to CMVR 1989. For national permit vehicles the requirements of having a dark brown body color and having two drivers have been done away with," the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways said in a statement. It said the words "National Permit or N/P" should be inscribed in the front and rear of the vehicles in bold letters, and added that in case of trailers, the letters "N/P" will be inscribed on the rear and left side of the vehicle. Over 27,000 people Saturday visited the Statue of Unity in Gujarat's Narmada district, the highest since the Sardar Patel memorial was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 31 and opened to the public on November 1. The statue, built on an islet near the Sardar Sarovar Dam in Kevadiya, at 182 metres is the tallest such structure in the world. With the capacity of the high-speed lift which takes tourists to the viewing gallery inside the statue being 5,000 persons per day, the state government asked people to plan their trip to the memorial keeping this aspect in mind. Goa Tourism Minister Manohar Ajgaonkar has said no organiser has approached the government to conduct the electronic, dance and music (EDM) festival in December this year in the coastal state. Earlier, EDM festivals like 'Sunburn', 'Supersonic' and 'TimeOut 72' were quite popular among tourists around Christmas in the coastal belt of North Goa district. 'TimeOut 72' was held in the state in December last year, but 'Sunburn' shifted its venue to Pune in the neighbouring Maharashtra state after 2015. "We want the EDM festivals to happen in Goa. But since no one has applied, we can't do anything about it. Goa is known for music and dance, and we want such festivals to happen during the tourist season," Ajgaonkar told PTI Friday. A 48-year-old NRI businessman died after he accidentally fell from the terrace of Taj Mansingh hotel in Lutyens' Delhi, police said Friday. During investigation, police learnt that Narrender A Mangalam, a resident of Maryland in the US, was inebriated and had gone to relieve himself on the terrace garden. Mangalam probably lost balance and fell down, police said. He had checked into the hotel around 2.30 am on November 7 and was to check out on November 8, they said. His body was found around 11.45 pm on November 7. The terrace garden is located two levels above the lobby and police said it did not have a boundary wall or grill. Twenty-nine people were injured in the annual "Hingot festival" in Gautampura town in Madhya Pradesh's Indore district, an official said Friday. The festival, observed traditionally on the day after Diwali, sees people of two villages, about 55 kilometres from here, attacking each other with hingots, a forest fruit, hollowed and filled with gunpowder, coal and brimstone. The group from Gautampura village is called "turra" and the one from Rungi is dubbed "kalgi" and they throw burning hingots at each other as part of what locals calls "hingot war". Depalpur Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Aditi Garg told PTI on Friday that 29 persons sustained minor injuries during the festival and were discharged following treatment. Kandhal Jadeja, Gujarat's lone Nationalist Congress Party MLA, was booked for allegedly threatening a hotel owner following an altercation, Porbandar police said Thursday. The incident took place Wednesday night outside a hotel on Ranavav Road in Kamlabaug area near Porbandar town, about 400 kilometres from here. In his complaint to Kamlabaug police, hotel owner Lilabhai Odedara has alleged that Jadeja threatened to kill him following a verbal spat over a minor issue, a senior police official said.
