Having scaled the Mount Everest and South Pole, mountaineer Satyarup Siddhanta created history by climbing Asia's highest volcanic peak, Mount Damavand in Iran. Mount Damavand is the highest peak in Iran. Satyarup was accompanied by Mousumi Khatua and Bhaswati Chatterjee, who left for the expedition on September 6. On September 10 morning, around 6 am, the trio started their expedition. Chatterjee decided to stay back at Camp 3, after advancing till 4600 metres. Mount Damavand is known for its sulphur discharge near its peak which can cause irreparable damage if exposed for a longer duration. The team had to scale the summit within a very short span of time to avoid the sulphur exposure. In a step up for cargo transportation in the country, the Southern Railway has successfully conducted a trial run of a 'road railer' which will facilitate 'door-to-door' transportation of goods. The trial was conducted between Melpakkam and Katpadi section of Chennai division Wednesday. Fitted with wheels akin to normal trucks, road railers carrying cargo will travel by road till it reaches a railway goods terminal, a SR release said Thursday. The road railer units will then be directly coupled with railway wagons, eliminating the task of loading and unloading of consignments. After reaching the receiving terminal by rail, the units containing the goods would be decoupled and attached to trucks to be delivered to customers by road. A private company, Kirloskar Pneumatic Co Ltd (KPCL), has tied up with Southern Railway to provide such specially-designed road railers. SR would operate and maintain them. Shanghai police have arrested a man in connection with a data leak at NASDAQ-listed Chinese hotelier Huazhu Group after the suspect failed to sell the information online. The 30-year-old suspect had hacked and stolen user data from hotels under the Huazhu Group and tried to sell it on overseas websites, the police said in a statement late Wednesday. Huazhu, one of China's biggest hoteliers and the local partner of France-based AccorHotels, had alerted the police to reports in August that the company's internal data was being sold online. The Huazhu Group said in a statement to the New York stock exchange on Monday that "the suspect also attempted to blackmail Huazhu by leveraging public pressure, without success". The potentially-leaked data included guest membership information, personal IDs, check-in records, guest names, mobile numbers and emails. Bollywood singer Sukhwinder Singh has requested the authorities to urgently repair the road from Ghoti to Shirdi in Nashik district of Maharashtra. Speaking to reporters here after visiting the famous Saibaba temple on Tuesday, Singh said because of potholes, the journey which should take one-and-a-half hours by car takes double that time. "Travelling from Ghoti to Shirdi was like undertaking a camel ride," he said, saying the road should be repaired urgently. "Earlier this road was like airport's runway. But now due to the poor condition, it takes at least three hours to reach here. It is said the road was damaged by rain, but then why the roads abroad are not damaged by rain?" he asked. Forty-eight licences have been issued to promote adventure sports in the Tehri lake and to give employment to local people, the Uttarakhand Assembly was told Tuesday. The Tehri Special Area Tourism Development Authority has issued these licences, state Tourism minister Satpal Maharaj told the Assembly in a written reply to a question by Dhanaulti MLA Pritam Singh Pawar. When asked why only 48 licences were issued so far, the minister attributed it to a ban imposed by the Uttarakhand High Court on white water river rafting and other adventure sports activities in the state in June this year. Now that the ban has been lifted, more licences will be issued to give a boost to adventure sports activities in the lake, including rafting and kayaking, he said.
