Raj to hold convention on preserving heritage properties
A two-day convention to focus on preserving heritage properties while promoting heritage tourism will be held in Bharatpur on September 13 and 14, officials said on Monday. Organised by the Indian Heritage Hotels Association (IHHA), the convention on 'Revitalising India as a Heritage Destination' will witness national and international experts speak on preservation of heritage buildings, museums and promoting lesser-known destinations. The convention will strive to preserve heritage properties from decay while promoting heritage tourism in the in-bound tourism market, IHHA general secretary Randhir Vikram Singh said. It will also bring to the forefront 'battlefield tourism', which aims to recreate the grand battles of Rajasthan. Saudi royal says jewels stolen at Paris Ritz
A member of the Saudi royal family has reported the theft of hundreds of thousands of euros' worth of jewellery from her hotel room at the Ritz hotel in Paris, police sources said Monday. The person, who was not identified by name, said the theft -- which would be the second reported jewel heist at the five-star hotel on Place Vendome this year -- took place on Friday afternoon. The jewels, worth an estimated 800,000 euros (USD 930,000), were not in a safe when they were taken and there was no sign of forced entry, the source said, confirming a report on France Info radio. France Info said the victim was a Saudi princess staying in one of the hotel's suites. An investigation has been opened by France's anti-organised crime brigade, a legal source said. Marbat festival celebrated with great fervour in Nagpur
Thousands of people thronged the streets of Maharashtra's Nagpur city on Monday to celebrate the Marbat festival.As per the tradition, the devotees took out a procession carrying effigies that represent evil forces. The clay effigies or 'Marbats' of Kali (black) and Pivli (Yellow) were the main attraction of the procession.The effigies were later taken to a Nehru Chowk ground and burned by the locals.The 150-year old festival is celebrated only in Nagpur. E-tourist visa fee fixed on reciprocity, unlikely to be reviewed soon: officials
Notwithstanding the concerns raised by the Tourism Ministry on the recent hike in e-tourist visa fee, it is unlikely to be reviewed soon as it has been fixed on the basis of reciprocity with other countries, officials said Monday. Union Tourism Minister K J Alphons has written to Home Minister Rajnath Singh requesting him to review the fee hike for the e-tourist visa. The issue was discussed at a high-level meeting, chaired by Cabinet Secretary P K Sinha, where the representatives of the Ministry of External Affairs have conveyed that the visa fees are decided on the basis of reciprocity and the new fee structure is reasonable, a home ministry official privy to the development said, indicating that there may not be a review soon. Officials in Tourism Ministry said that the hike in e-tourist visa fee could hit its plan to double foreign tourist arrivals in the next three years. Assam governor lays foundation for Vaishnav tourism centre
Assam Governor Jagdish Mukhi laid the foundation stone for infrastructure development of the cultural and tourism centre at Madhupur Satra, seat of Vaishnav culture, in West Bengal's Cooch Behar district. The project, worth Rs 2 crore, is expected to be completed in 12 months and include construction of guest house with a capacity for 500 and a 'bhog ghar'. Tajikistan ambassador to India Jalolov Mirzosharif Friday pitched for more bilateral trade in sectors like garment and tea. Speaking at a session organised by the Federation of Indian Export Organisations, the envoy said the ties between the two countries had been nurtured through the ages.
