Nechama Rivlin was a popular first lady who focused on the arts, the environment and children with special needs. Born in an Israeli farming community, she married the future president in 1971 and was a trusted adviser throughout his political career. She is survived by her husband, three children and seven grandchildren. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed deep sorrow over her passing, lauding her "heroic" battle against her illness.

Decomposed body of man found in drain
The body of a man was found in a drain in Alipur area on Monday, a senior police official said. After getting information about the incident, police officials fished out the decomposed body from the drain and sent it for postmortem, he said. According to the official, the man died three to four days ago. Police were trying to identify the deceased as no identity card was recovered from the body, he added.

California newspaper sale ends 122 years of family ownership
After 122 years of family ownership, the Bakersfield Californian has been sold to a Canadian publisher, the newspaper announced. The Harrell-Fritts family said in a message to readers on Sunday that Sound News Media, a new company run by publisher Steven Malkowich, has purchased the Californian and its corporate entity, TBC Media. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. The sale, which includes the newspaper's digital properties, is set to close June 30. The daily paper, held by the family since 1897, serves the city of Bakersfield north of Los Angeles and the surrounding San Joaquin Valley. A former Samajwadi Party legislator Monday proposed building a memorial of former defence minister George Fernandes. The proposal came as friends and family of Fernandes paid tributes to the socialist leader on his 90th birth anniversary. "When George died, a proposal was mooted that some of his remains be kept somewhere to remember him. But according to the wishes of (his wife) Leila Kabir, christian traditions were followed during last rites. "A part of his remains is still lying with one of his Buddhist followers. So if anyone is interested, these remains can be placed at a memorial like those of Mahatma Gandhi and B R Ambedkar," former Samajwadi Party MLA Sunilam said. He said since Fernandes was part of the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government, the current dispensation could easily build such a memorial.
