Nobel Prizes still struggle with wide gender disparity

Nobel Prizes are the most prestigious awards on the planet but the aura of this year's announcements has been dulled by questions over why so few women have entered the pantheon, particularly in the sciences. The march of Nobel announcements begins Monday with the physiology/medicine prize. Since the first prizes were awarded in 1901, 892 individuals have received one, but just 48 of them have been women. Thirty of those women won either the literature or peace prize, highlighting the wide gender gap in the laureates for physics, chemistry and physiology/medicine. Some of the disparity likely can be attributed to underlying structural reasons, such as the low representation of women in high-level science. The American Institute of Physics, for example, says in 2014, only 10 per cent of full physics professorships were held by women. But critics suggest that .

There are those similarities in me too," skipper Rohit told mediapersons today. The stylish Mumbaikar spoke about qualities in Dhoni that he has tried to inculcate. California divorce courts go to dogs as pets gain status

California courts could be going to the dogs and maybe cats, too under a new law granting judges authority to settle disagreements over who keeps the family pet in divorce cases the same way they handle child-custody disputes. Until now, Fido and Kitty have been considered family property, a status giving them little more standing in a divorce than a family's big-screen TV. Under a bill signed Thursday by Gov Jerry Brown, pets will still be considered community property but a judge deciding who gets to keep them will have the discretion of weighing such factors as who feeds them, who takes them to the vet and on walks, and who protects them. "I think it's a good idea. I personally have a little rescue bichon poodle named Rodney King Stone. He's like a family member," said family law attorney Megan Green of Los Angeles, who has seen her share of divorce cases where couples battled relentlessly over the pet. In one case, a woman said the dog was a gift from her husband, but the ...

Neither I nor Modi went to convent, it made no difference: Naidu

Seeking to debunk the perception that English-medium education is indispensable, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu said here Friday that neither he nor Prime Minister Narendra Modi had "convent" schooling. Naidu, who often speaks about the need to preserve regional languages, said that one's mother tongue is like the eyes whereas other languages are like spectacles. He was speaking after felicitating young musicians here on the occasion of 102th birth anniversary of legendary singer M S Subbulakshmi. The late Carnatic singer was born on September 16, 1916. Due to the colonial rule, "a weakness that has crept into our minds is that we have fascination for other languages" and promote our own language less, he said. Foreign leaders (from non-English speaking countries) do not speak in English when visiting India and instead use interpreters, he said. "Promoting our language is the need of the hour because culture and language go together. They make you understand common people better. ...
