Arjuna awardee Manika has mixed feelings as coach ignored for Dronacharya

An Arjuna award for her historic achievements has made Manika Batra happy but only just, as she says the Dronacharya snub to her coach Sandeep Gupta has been a dampener. The celebrations after securing the country's second highest sporting honour were subdued as her childhood coach Gupta missed out on the Dronacharya award for the second time. "Yes I wanted him to get the award. But it is the government's decision and we have to respect that. I will work harder so he gets it next time," Manika told PTI after being named as a sponsored athlete of Herbalife Nutrition here on Thursday. "It's a case of being partially happy for her," said her mother Sushma. Manika, who is the first Indian woman to win a Commonwealth Games gold and an Asian Games bronze, was also in the running for Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna. President Ram Nath Kovind received Thursday credentials from the envoys of five nations, including Netherlands and Lithuania, at a ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan, according to an official statement. Afghan envoy Abdali resigns

Afghan Ambassador to India Shaida Abdali has resigned from the post, saying he wants to serve the people of his country who are facing challenging situation. Abdali has submitted his resignation letter on Wednesday when Afghan President Ashraf Ghani was on a day-long visit to India. In his resignation letter, Abdali, who served in Delhi for six years, said he wanted to go back to Afghanistan and work with the people for development, peace and national unity. "The exceptional warmth, hospitality and friendship extended to me during my tenure will remain a hallmark in my political career for which I'm deeply grateful to the friendly people and govt. of India," he said on Twitter. "Serving my country for years in India, I felt the need to return and serve my country from within. During my tenure, I have had the honour of witnessing our relations going from strength to strength," he said. It is not immediately known whether his resignation has been accepted or not.

Maroon 5 will be the halftime performers at Super Bowl LIII Halftime Show in 2019. Multiple sources confirmed to Variety, the music group was locked by the organisers owing to their all-star collaborations, such as Cardi B-featuring Girls Like You, What Lovers Do with SZA, Cold with Future and Don't Wanna Know with Kendrick Lamar. JU to confer DLitt on Mary Kom, Kaushik Basu, others

Boxer Mary Kom, eminent economist Kaushik Basu, haematologist Dr Mammen Chandy and banker Chandrasekhar Ghosh will be conferred the honorary D Lit at the 63rd Annual Convocation of Jadavpur University, Pro-Vice Chancellor Pradip Ghosh said on Wednesday. He said cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar has expressed his inability to receive the honour on ethical grounds. Molecular biologist Dipankar Chatterji will also be given the honorary D Sc at the Convocation to be held in the university campus on December 24, Ghosh said at a press meet. He said the university had also approached Sachin Tendulkar for conferring him the honorary D Lit. "But he mailed us back expressing his inability to receive the honour on ethical grounds," Ghosh said.

Rapper Drake sued a woman who accused him of raping her and making her pregnant.The 'Hotline bling' rapper filed a lawsuit against the woman, Layla Lace, whom he met during his 'Boy Meets World Tour' in Manchester, England, reported TMZ. Air Marshal Randhir Singh passes away at 97

Air Marshal Randhir Singh (retd), a highly decorated Indian Air Force veteran, passed away here at the age of 97 after a brief illness. A contemporary of IAF's late Marshal Arjan Singh, Air Marshal Randhir Singh, PVSM, AVSM, Vir Chakra, died Tuesday night. He was cremated Wednesday with full military honours at Sector-25 crematorium in Chandigarh, a Defence Ministry release said. His son, Wing Commander Pradeep Singh (retd), performed the last rites. Air Marshal Singh is also survived by a daughter.

HP CM congratulates Lt commander Jamwal over Tenzing award

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur congratulated Lieutenant Commander Pratibha Jamwal for being named as a recipient for the Tenzing Norgay National Adventure award. U'khand House passes resolution seeking 'mother of nation' status to cow

The Uttarakhand Assembly passed a resolution on Wednesday, seeking the status of "rashtra mata" (mother of the nation) to the cow. The resolution will be sent to the Centre. It was moved by state Animal Husbandry Minister Rekha Arya and passed unanimously after it got the support of both the Opposition and treasury benches. Moving the resolution in the Assembly, Arya claimed that the cow was the "only animal that not only inhales oxygen, but also exhales it", and spoke at length about the "medicinal qualities" of cow urine. "The cow is treated as an incarnation of motherhood. The cow's milk is scientifically considered the best for newborn after his mother's milk," the minister said. Giving the status of "rashtra mata" to the cow will further strengthen cow-conservation efforts all over the country, she added.

French court upholds fine for magazine over Kate topless photos

A French court Wednesday dismissed an appeal by editors of gossip magazine Closer, and upheld two 45,000-euro ($53,000) fines for publishing pictures of the Duchess of Cambridge sunbathing topless. The court upheld the maximum fines imposed by a lower court for invading the privacy of Prince William's wife Kate with its 2012 publication. Closer published the grainy snaps of Kate wearing only bikini bottoms while on holiday with the prince at a chateau in the Luberon region of southeastern France in September 2012. The pictures caused outrage among the British royal family and public. Newly wed couple injured in attack by woman's father

: A newly wed couple was injured in an attack here Wednesday, allegedly by the woman's father opposed to their marriage, days after the 'honour killing' of a Dalit Christian man in Nalgonda district. "The man attacked the couple with a sickle and they suffered bleeding injuries. They have been admitted to a private hospital," a senior police official told PTI. The assailant fled the scene, he said. Footage of the incident, captured on a CCTV from a nearby building, showed the man attacking the couple from behind with a sickle as they were sitting on a two wheeler.
