The first-ever Humboldt penguin chick born in the country has died within a week of its birth. The birth of baby penguin at the Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Udyan, also called Byculla Zoo, on Independence Day had brought much cheer, it being the first penguin birth in the country. In a statement, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said despite best-possible care, the chick died on Wednesday night. Autopsy report revealed that there were anomalies such as "yolk sac retention" and liver dysfunction which caused the death, it said. After two penguins at the zoo, Molt (male) and Flipper (female), mated, Flipper laid a single egg on July 5, and it hatched successfully on August 15. "Despite the parent penguins providing good care, the condition of the chick was found to be sinking. All efforts were made by the veterinary team to save it, but the chick was found dead on the night of August 22," the statement said. A 34-year old woman prisoner, facing charges of killing her parents and two children, allegedly committed suicide in a jail here today, officials said. The body of Soumya was found hanging from a tree, they said. A native of Pinarayi here, the woman was arrested in April this year on charges of killing the four as they had objected to her "wayward lifestyle", officials said. Her 76-year old father, mother (68) and her eight-year old daughter Aishwarya had died in a span of three months this year, police said. Keerthana, another daughter of Soumya, had died in 2012, police said, adding that all the four had died after being hospitalised with complaints of vomiting. Some relatives raised suspicion over the three deaths in a 50-day period and lodged a police complaint following which investigations began. A youth was electrocuted to death after coming in contact with electric wires used for decoration of a railway over bridge (ROB) in the city just hours after Chief Minister Naveen Patanik had opened it for public, police said today. A 80-year old priest of the Malankara Syrian Orthodox Church died this morning after he allegedly fell off a moving train near Ernakulam junction, police said. The Metropolitan of the Diocese of Chengannur of the Orthodox Church, Thomas Mar Athanasios, died due to a fall from the coach of a train in between Ernakulam Town and Ernakulam junction at around 5.30 a.m, police added. Police suspect that the senior priest, who was travelling from Gujarat, fell after being hit by the door of the compartment as he was preparing to alight at Ernakulam junction a few minutes away. A video showing a man lying dead and allegedly unattended for several hours in the under-construction Habibganj station in Bhopal went viral on social media today.
