A five member family from Tamil Nadu, including a woman, were killed after their car collided with a speeding lorry today at Kadapalli, about 160 km from here, police said. Three persons died on the spot and two more breathed their last on way to a hospital, police said. The mishap took place when the family was on their way back home to Dharmapuri after visiting a naturopathy hospital in Virupakshapuram, 70 km from here, police said. With floods ravaging Kerala and Coorg in Karnataka, animal rescuers are being inundated with distress calls from desperate people who were forced to evacuate their homes without their pets. The Hyderabad-based Humane Society International/India has set up an emergency helpline to coordinate animal rescue throughout Kerala. It is collaborating with Compassion Unlimited Plus Action (CUPA), based in Bangalore, for rescue efforts in Karnataka's hill district of Coorg. Many rescue boats in the early days of the disaster in Kerala refused to take animals, leaving behind hundreds of dogs and cats to fend for themselves, especially in areas such as Kochi, Kottayam and Alappuzha where the pet population is high. The first-ever joint air exercise involving the Indian Air Force and the the Royal Malaysian Air Force commenced today at Subang Air Base in Malaysia, officials said. India has been eyeing a foothold at the strategically important Subang Air Base, sources said. The Calcutta High Court directed today a trial court hearing a divorce suit of West Bengal minister and city mayor Sovan Chatterjee to dispose of two applications by his wife seeking cost of litigation and maintenance for their minor daughter within two months. Directing the Alipore trial court to dispose of the two applications within two months of communication of his order, Justice Sabyasachi Bhattacharya set aside the lower court's earlier direction in this matter. On June 29, the trial court had directed that it will hear the two applications by Ratna Chatterjee seeking cost of litigation and maintenance of their minor child from her husband along with the divorce suit. Challenging this, the Kolkata mayor's wife had moved the high court on July 4 claiming that the two applications should be decided first and then only the divorce suit can be heard. Sovan Chatterjee's lawyers submitted that Ratna's claim for hearing of the two applications first were only to delay the hearing of .
