"Tributes to our former Prime Minister Shri Rajiv Gandhi Ji on his birth anniversary. We remember his efforts towards the nation," the PM tweeted. Today is Gandhi's 74th birth anniversary. Born on 20th August, 1944, Rajiv Gandhi served as prime minister from 1984 to 1989. He was assassinated on May 21, 1991.
Legislation to posthumously award Gandhi Congressional Gold Medal to be introduced: US lawmaker
An influential American lawmaker has said that she will introduce a historic legislation to posthumously award Mahatma Gandhi a Congressional Gold Medal, the highest civilian award in the US, for inspiring peaceful movements for civil rights around the world. Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney from New York made the announcement at the 38th India Day Parade, the annual extravaganza celebrating India's Independence Day, held here yesterday. "Gandhi influenced so many people who have already received the medal, such as Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela based on their non-violent leadership for justice. All of this was based on the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi," Maloney told PTI at the parade. She said she is soon going to introduce the legislation and expressed confidence that the legislation will be successful. Donald Glover has revealed he once cancelled a night of filming for "Atlanta", when he heard shots being fired in Georgia. The actor, who both stars in and has created the show, said he generally feels safe shooting in the city, but the team was disturbed when they heard distinct sound of guns at a distance in the Bankhead. Although 16 years have gone by, differently-abled athlete Somnath Malo still fondly remembers the evening he had dinner with former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who died on Thursday. Malo, who hails from Nadia district of West Bengal, was a member of the Indian contingent that won 22 medals - three gold, nine silver and 10 bronze - in the 2002 FESPIC Games in Busan, South Korea. He had won one gold in high jump. Vajpayee had invited the victorious Indian team to dinner at his residence. "He called me to sit beside him.
