Modi quotes Subramania Bharati in I-Day speech, ends on poetic note

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today invoked noted Tamil poet Subramania Bharati to drive home the message in his Independence Day address as he borrowed his words saying India will show the "whole world a way" to get rid of all kinds of bondage. Modi's speech lasted for a little over 80 minutes, during which he touched on a variety of issues, including his government's initiatives, the state of economy, women empowerment and India's stature globally. The prime minister quoted a few lines from the works of the revered poet. He read out the lines in Tamil and also the translation in Hindi. Renowned Malayalam poet Chemmanam Chacko dies

Noted Malayalam poet and Sahitya Akademi awardee Chemmanam Chacko died at his residence in Kakkanad near here, his family members said today. Chacko, 92, had been undergoing treatment for age-related ailments for quite sometime. His end came last night after his condition worsened, they said. He is survived by wife and two daughters. Known for his satirical works, Chacko reacted to the contemporary socio-political issues of Kerala through his poems. Chacko had taught Malayalam at schools and colleges. Later, he worked at Kerala University and then the Publication Department. Chacko had won several awards, including those by the Kerala Sahitya Akademi, Sanjayan Award, Kunjan Nambiar Kavitha puraskaram, P Smaraka Puraskaram and Mahakavi Ulloor Award. His funeral will be held on Sunday at the cemetery of St Mary's Orthodox Cathedral at Mannukkunnu in Mulakkulam village in Kottayam district.

Japan's emperor makes last war-end anniversary speech

Japan's Emperor Akihito has expressed deep remorse over his country's role in World War II as he made his last appearance at a ceremony marking the end of the hostilities. The 84-year-old emperor made his final war-end anniversary speech before his abdication scheduled in April. He will be succeeded by his son, Crown Prince Naruhito. Akihito, attending today's 73rd anniversary of the end of the war at Tokyo's Budokan hall, expressed "the feelings of deep remorse" over the tragedy. He pledged to reflect on the wartime past and expressed hope that the tragedy should never be repeated. PM resumes trend of delivering long I-Day speeches

After delivering his shortest Independence Day speech last year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi resumed his trend of delivering long speeches and spoke for over 80 minutes while addressing the nation from the ramparts of the historic Red Fort. Modi had last year spoken for 57 minutes, his shortest Independence Day speech in five years. In 2016, he had spoken for 96 minutes, the longest ever Independence Day address by an Indian prime minister. India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru spoke for 72 minutes in 1947 which was till 2015 the longest ever speech from the Red Fort. In his radio address 'Mann Ki Baat' before last Independence Day, Modi said he had received letters from people complaining that his Independence Day speeches were "a little too long" and promised to make a shorter speech. Police look into video of man spanking hippo at LA Zoo

Police were investigating after a video showed a man spanking a hippopotamus at the Los Angeles Zoo. The video showed the man crossing a railing last week and sneaking up on two hippos, Rosie and Mara. He smacks Rosie on the rear and her mother lifts her head as the man runs off and raises his arms in gesture of victory. Zoo spokeswoman April Spurlock told the Los Angeles Times that any unauthorised interaction with an animal is unsafe for the animal and potentially unsafe for the person. Spurlock said state law prohibits entering zoo enclosures. The zoo had posted a "No Trespassing" sign on the exhibit for the first time. Police told the newspaper they're investigating the case as trespassing because the hippo didn't appear to be injured.
