Rishabh, Bajrang, Manu, Rani win DSJA awards

Asian Games gold medal winning wrestler Bajrang Punia, women's hockey player Rani Rampal, Test cricketer Rishabh Pant and pistol prodigy Manu Bhaker won this year's Delhi Sports Journalists Association's (DSJA) Best Sportspersons awards here Thursday. The awards were presented by Indian Olympic Association and world hockey body (FIH) president Narinder Batra. While Bajrang and Rishabh won the award among men, Rani and Manu were conferred the recognition in the female category. "It is very inspiring when sports journalists give such awards," said Bajrang, adding that the award would inspire him to work harder in the run up to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Panda hits back at Patnaik

BJP national vice president Baijayant Panda on Thursday, hit back at Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, a day after the CM said the BJD Kendrapara candidate will not hide anything in his affidavit like drawing salary and working for a mining company. Panda had resigned from the BJD and his Lok Sabha membership last year. He joined the BJP this year and is now the saffron party candidate for the Kendrapara seat. While announcing the name of the BJD candidate for the Kendrapara Lok Sabha seat on Wednesday, Patnaik had said "Anubhav Mohanty will be working only for the interest of the people of Kendrapara & he will have nothing to hide in his affidavit like drawing salary and working for a mining company". Senior Congressman Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil on Thursday held a meeting with BJP MP Dilip Gandhi to discuss the candidature of their sons from Ahmednagar Lok Sabha constituency."We discussed the candidature of his and my son for Ahmednagar. He (Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil) has requested me not to field my son against his son for this seat, but I have not made any commitment yet. New York City councilman named as world's tallest politician

A 6-foot-10 (208 centimeters) New York City councilman from Brooklyn has been named tallest politician in the world. Robert Cornegy Jr. was honored for that distinction at a City Hall ceremony on Wednesday after being officially certified by Guinness World Records as world's tallest male politician on January 14. Cornegy says he went for the title two years ago after a constituent jokingly told him "you have to be the tallest politician ever." Cornegy says being tall has its challenges, especially shopping for shoes and clothes. The previous record holder was a British member of Parliament named Sir Louis Gluckstein, who measured 6-foot-7-1/2 inches (202 centimeters). He died in 1979 and was succeeded by another British politician who stood at 6-foot-6 inches (198 centimeters).

Amartya Sen awarded Oxford University Bodley Medal

Nobel Prize-winning economist Amartya Sen has been awarded the prestigious Bodley Medal, the highest honour bestowed by the University of Oxford's world-famous Bodleian Libraries. The Medal is awarded to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the fields in which the Bodleian is active, including literature, culture, science and communication. "The honour was awarded (to Sen) during the Founder's Lunch on 15 March, an annual event commemorating the birth of the Libraries' founder, Sir Thomas Bodley, and his legacy of philanthropy," the Library said in a statement on Wednesday. The 85-year-old winner of the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences, who is the Thomas W Lamont University Professor at Harvard University and a member of faculty at Harvard Law School, received the Medal from Lord Patten of Barnes, Chancellor of the University of Oxford, and Bodley's Librarian Richard Ovenden. Journalist Prafulla Rajguru dead

Veteran journalist and academician Prafulla Rajguru died on Wednesday at a hospital here, his family sources said. He was 82. His family members said he was undergoing treatment for a hip injury at the hospital and died during the early hours Wednesday. Rajguru is survived by his wife Kabita and daughter Priyakshi. Woman with two wombs gives birth to twins nearly a month after delivering a boy

A couple in Bangladesh was in for a surprise when the wife delivered twins, 26 days after giving birth to a boy, something considered as very rare in medical history, media reported on Tuesday. Arifa Sultana Iti was rushed to Ad-din hospital in the southwestern city of Jessore on March 22 to hospital after she fell ill and delivered a girl and a boy through caesarean section. Iti had on February 25 gave premature birth to a baby boy, bdnews24.com website reported. Sheila Poddar, the chief of the hospital's gynaecology department who attended the woman, said she discovered in an ultrasonography test that Iti has two uteruses. Telangana LS polls: 143 nominations rejected, 503 found valid

As many as 143 nominations for 17 Lok Sabha seats in Telangana which goes to the polls in the first phase on April 11, were rejected after scrutiny, Election Officials said Wednesday. A total of 646 candidates had filed their nominations in the state out of which 143 were rejected and 503 were found to be in order after scrutiny on Tuesday, a release from the Telangana Election Commission said. The last date for withdrawal of nominations is March 28. Nizamabad topped the maximum valid nominations with 189 followed by Nalgonda 31 and Khammam 29 while Hyderabad had 19 valid nominations and Secunderabad 30. The maximum of 27 nominations were rejected in Malkajgiri constitutency where 40 nominations were filed followed by Secunderabad where 21 nominations were rejected.
