4 killed in car mishap in Telangana

Two couples were killed when their car rammed into a roadside tree after one of its front tyres burst in neighbouring Jagtial district, police said Tuesday. The mishap occurred Monday near Dharmaram village when Konduri Manohar of Kodimal village, his wife and in-laws were proceeding for a function. Manohar (56), who was driving the car, and Veeresham (78) were killed on the spot, Peddapalli Assistant Police Commissioner Venkata Ramana Reddy said. Veeresham's 70-year old wife succumbed to injuries at a hospital Monday while Manohar's spouse died Tuesday without responding to treatment, he added.

SC dismisses plea challenging constitutional validity 'triple talaq' ordinance

The Supreme Court Monday dismissed a plea challenging the constitutional validity of an ordinance which makes the practice of instant 'triple talaq' a punishable offence. A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi dismissed a plea of a Kerala-based outfit and said it will not like to interfere. The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Ordinance was first notified on September 19 last year, hours after the Union Cabinet had cleared it. Instant 'triple talaq', also known as 'talaq-e-biddat', is an instant divorce whereby a Muslim man can legally divorce his wife by pronouncing 'talaq' three times in one go. The ordinance making the practice of instant 'triple talaq' a punishable offence was issued for the third time in less than a year on February 21.

Parrikar death: Goa minister orders probe into 'purification' ritual performed at Kala Academy

Minister for Arts and Culture Govind Gaude has ordered an inquiry into alleged purification rituals held at Kala Academy, where late Goa chief minister Manohar Parrikar's body was kept for public homage."I have taken a strong note of some activities carried out in the Kala Academy premises as rituals today. I have ordered an inquiry into it. We cannot promote or patronise unscientific activities inside government buildings," Gaude said in a Facebook post.Parrikar, a senior BJP leader, died on March 17 evening after a prolonged battle against cancer at the age of 63.A day after his death, Parrikar's mortal remains were kept at the Kala Academy here for public to pay their last respects before his last rites.

Inquiry ordered into 'purification' of place where Parrikar's body was kept

The Goa government has ordered an inquiry into reports that a "purification ritual" was conducted on Saturday at the state-run Kala Academy here, where the body of former chief minister Manohar Parrikar was kept. Art and Culture Minister Govind Gawade told PTI that he had ordered the inquiry after a section of the media reported that a purification ritual was carried out by some persons on the academy premises where Parrikar's mortal remains were kept on Monday before final rites. "I have taken a strong note of these activities.... We cannot promote or patronise unscientific activities in government buildings," Gawade said. Parrikar, 63, died on Sunday after battling a pancreatic ailment for a year.
