Brazil approves furlough for jailed ex-leader Lula to bury grandson
Brazil's jailed former president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Friday was granted leave from prison to attend the weekend funeral of his young grandson, who died at the age of seven. A federal court decided that Lula, who is serving two concurrent 12-year sentences for corruption, can attend Saturday's services in Sao Paulo for Arthur Araujo Lula da Silva, who succumbed to meningitis. "Lula has been authorised to take part in the funeral; to protect his family's privacy, and to guarantee public safety and his own, details on the transfer will remain secret," justice officials in Parana state said in a statement. Federal prosecutors had earlier issued a statement saying they supported Lula's request. The BCCI on Friday put out a picture of the Indian Team's jersey bearing IAF Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman's name and number 1 on it as a tribute after his return to the country from Pakistan. Varthaman returned home from Pakistan on Friday to a hero's welcome, two days after he was captured following a dogfight when his MiG 21 was shot down. Last rites of 2 IAF officers killed in J&K chopper crash performed
The last rites of Squadron Leader Siddharth Vashisht and Sergeant Vikrant Sehrawat, who died in a chopper crash in Jammu and Kashmir's Budgam district, were performed with full military honours at their home towns on Friday. Vashisht's (31) last rites were performed in Chandigarh. The Indian Air Force gave a gun salute in the presence of officials from the IAF, the civil administration and a large number of people who turned up to pay their last respects. In uniform, the deceased officer's wife, Aarti, who is also a squadron leader, laid a wreath on Vashisht before the last rites were performed. His father lit the funeral pyre. AMMK, SDPI ink poll pact for LS polls
Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) Friday entered into a poll pact with Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) for the coming Lok Sabha polls, allotting one seat to it. This was the seat-sharing agreement entered into by AMMK founder TTV Dhinakaran, who aims to upset the ruling AIADMK's victory prospects, two years after he was sidelined from the party. The seat-sharing deal was clinched during a meeting between a delegation of SDPI led by its National Vice President KKSM Tehlan Baqavi and Dhinakaran here, a release from AMMK said. Nepal's tourism minister Adhikari cremated with full state honours
Nepal's Tourism and Civil Aviation Minister Rabindra Adhikari, who was killed in a helicopter crash, was cremated Friday with full state honours. A large number of leaders and people marched in the funeral procession through Pokhara and reached Ramghat to pay their last tributes to Adhikari. The Nepal Army marked the leader's demise with a 61-gun-salute before he was cremated at the banks of Seti river. His elder son, Biraj Adhikari, lit the funeral pyre as per Hindu traditions. Union Minister Thaawar Chand Gehlot on Friday said the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD) has set its seventh Guinness world record with 260 people in Gujarat's Bharuch getting 'Modern Artificial Limbs (Legs)' implanted within eight hours. The DEPwD under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment had previously set six Guinness world records in other categories. This new record was set on Thursday. IAF pilot who died in crash cremated with military honours
The mortal remains of pilot Ninad Mandavgane, who died in an IAF helicopter crashed in Jammu and Kashmir two days back, were consigned to flames with full military honours here on Friday. Mandavgane (33), who hailed from Nashik, was cremated on the bank of Godavari river around 12.30 pm. Mandavgane and six others died on Wednesday, when the IAF chopper crashed in Budgam district of Jammu and Kashmir. According to officials, the helicopter crashed in an open field near Garend Kalaan village in Budgam around 10.05 am. Besides its pilots, four others onboard and a local resident died in the incident. Mandavgane's body was brought to Ojhar airport from New Delhi by a special IAF plane on Thursday night. Air Force officials, including Air Commodore Samir Borade, commanding officer of the IAF Station Ojhar, and Nashik Collector Radhakrishna B, paid tribute to the pilot there. India on Thursday set a Guinness World Record by parading 500 Kumbh Mela special buses non-stop here, on Thursday.Till date, Abu Dhabi held a record of running 390 buses in a parade.The Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) ran a fleet of 500 shuttle buses on a stretch of 3.2 kilometres between Sahson toll and Nawabganj toll plaza.The UPSRTC had issued directions to all the 18 regions of the state to send the buses along with manpower in the city by February 27.A couple of observers from the Guinness Book of World Records witnessed the event and handed over a certificate.
