India ends 2020 transshipment pact with Bangladesh; Petrapole saw 39 per cent rise in trucks, 64 per cent jump in consignments before facility was withdrawn on April 8
Bangladesh interim government's Commerce Adviser Sheikh Bashir Uddin on Thursday said that his country will not face any problems due to the cancellation of trans-shipment facilities by India and Dhaka will try to overcome the situation on its own. His remarks came a day after India on Wednesday announced the withdrawal of the trans-shipment facility it had granted to Bangladesh for exporting various items to West Asia, Europe and various other countries, except Nepal and Bhutan. Just yesterday, discussions were held with business representatives from various sectors; even buyers were present. We will attempt to overcome the crisis through our arrangements," Bashir Uddin was quoted as saying by Bangla language newspaper Prothom Alo. He said Bangladesh is working to ensure that there is no deficiency in competitiveness through its capabilities. Commercial capacity will be enhanced. Simultaneously, steps are being taken to ensure that there are no shortcomings in connectivity either,
India cited logistical issues for scrapping the facility, saying it caused major congestion at ports and airports, leading to delays, higher costs, and export backlogs
The government has terminated the transshipment facility that allowed export cargo from Bangladesh to third countries using Indian land customs stations en route to ports and airports, according to a government circular. Indian exporters, mainly from the apparel sector, had earlier urged the government to withdraw this facility to the neighbouring country. The facility had enabled smooth trade flows for Bangladesh's exports to countries like Bhutan, Nepal, and Myanmar. It was provided by India to Bangladesh in June 2020. "It has been decided to rescind... circular...dated June 29, 2020, as amended with immediate effect. Cargo already entered into India may be allowed to exit the Indian territory as per the procedure given in that circular," the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs' circular, dated April 8, said. The decision comes against the backdrop of the recent comments made by Bangladesh Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus on India's northeastern states. Yunus while addressin

The Bangladesh Army Tuesday dismissed a report published by an Indian media outlet, saying the article claiming an emergency meeting of top army brass was based on "false and fabricated" information. In a statement, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the media wing of the Bangladesh Army, said the report, titled 'Bangladesh Army Holds Emergency Meeting Amid Possibility of Coup Against Chief Adviser Mohammad Yunus,' is a "glaring example of journalistic malpractice." The ISPR termed it a misleading article based on fabricated information regarding a routine meeting of the Bangladesh Army. The article "lacks credible sources or any verifiable evidence", it said. The information presented in the article is entirely unfounded and the claims of an "impending coup" are "entirely deceitful." It slammed the media outlet for publishing "sensationalist narratives without due diligence or a responsible commitment to journalistic integrity". According to the ISPR, this is not the fi

"From our side, we are fully ready for the meeting. Now, we await a positive response from India, Foreign Secretary Md. Jashim Uddin said at a media briefing here, outlining the Chief Adviser's forthcoming visits to China and Thailand. Bangladesh on Thursday termed the recent remarks by the Ministry of the External Affairs on the country as "unwarranted" and amounting to "interference" in another country's domestic affairs. Last week, India voiced concern over Bangladesh releasing certain "violent extremists" and underlined that it is the responsibility of the interim government in Dhaka to protect Hindus and other minorities as well as their religious institutions. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mohammad Rafiqul Alam said Dhaka took note of the MEA's comments concerning Bangladesh's elections, law and order situation and matters related to minorities. "Bangladesh firmly believes these issues are entirely its internal affairs, and such remarks are unwarranted and tantamount to interference in another country's domestic matters," he said in his weekly media briefing. Alam, who also serves as the ministry's public diplomacy wing director, said New Delhi's comments were misleading as well as those did not reflect the

Bangladesh's interim government of Muhammad Yunus on Sunday promised to quicken investigations into incidents of rapes and assaults on women amid growing such incidents prompting nationwide protests. Law adviser Asif Nazrul said the government planned to enact a law requiring police to complete investigation of rape cases within 15 days and trial in 90 days. The accused cannot be granted bail on the pretext of not completion of trial within 90 days. If there is any negligence on the part of the administration, specific provisions for punishment will be added to the law, he said. The government's comments came three days after an alleged brutal assault and rape of an eight-year-old girl by her sister's father-in-law in western Magura visibly sparked a nationwide outrage, prompting authorities to come up with the announcement. Bangladesh recently saw several incidents of rapes and attack on women on the street. In one such incident, two women were assaulted in the capital ahead of th
