Rajnath to skip Russia's Victory Day parade, his deputy to represent India

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is set to skip Russia's Victory Day parade and his deputy Sanjay Seth is likely to represent India at the event in Moscow this week, official sources said on Saturday. The move to send the Minister of State for Defence to the May 9 ceremony comes amid increasing tensions between India and Pakistan over the Pahalgam terror attack. Russia had invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the Victory Day parade to mark the 80th anniversary of the Soviet victory over Germany in the Second World War, but it was decided that Singh would attend the event. The sources said Seth will represent India at the parade. Russia has invited leaders of several friendly nations to attend this year's Victory Day parade. Modi had travelled to Russia twice last year for an annual summit with President Vladimir Putin and to attend the BRICS Summit in Kazan. The Russian president is expected to visit India for the annual summit this year.

Trump calls J-K terror attack 'deeply disturbing', Putin terms it 'brutal'

President Donald Trump on Tuesday said that the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir was "deeply disturbing", asserting that the US stands strongly with India against terrorism. Terrorists opened fire at a famed meadow near Pahalgam town in Jammu and Kashmir, killing 26 people, mostly tourists, in what is the deadliest attack in the Valley since the Pulwama strike in 2019. "Deeply disturbing news out of Kashmir. The United States stands strong with India against Terrorism," Trump said in a post on Truth Social. "We pray for the souls of those lost, and for the recovery of the injured. Prime Minister (Narendra) Modi, and the incredible people of India, have our full support and deepest sympathies. Our hearts are with you all!" he added. The 26 dead in the Pahalgam attack included two foreigners - from UAE and Nepal - and two locals, a high-ranking Indian official said, without getting into details.

NYT report on HAL re-routing restricted tech to Russia incorrect: Report

A report in The New York Times linking a company that is part of a British aerospace major to a state-run Indian defence firm claiming that the latter has ties with a Russian arms agency is "factually incorrect" and "misleading", official sources said on Monday. The report suggested that military hardware supplied by the British firm to the Indian company may have found its way to the Russian agency Rosoboronexport. The report has "tried to frame issues and distort facts to suit a political narrative", the sources said, adding the media outlet "overlooked" basic due diligence. "The Indian entity mentioned in the report has scrupulously followed all its international obligations on strategic trade controls and end-user commitments," said a source. "India's robust legal and regulatory framework on strategic trade continues to guide overseas commercial ventures by its companies," it said. "We expect reputed media outlets to undertake basic due diligence while publishing such reports,

Russia ready for 'trilateral talks' on Ukraine, says envoy Denis Alipov

Amid multiple efforts to resolve the Russia-Ukraine conflict and achieve lasting peace, Russian Ambassador to India Denis Alipov on Friday said Moscow was "prepared to sit in a trilateral format" for talks. During an interactive session at the India Today Conclave, he also said the current US adminstration, in comparison with its predecessors, was showing the "right signs" to stop of the conflict. Asked about US President Donald Trump recently announcing his intention to end the conflict, the envoy sought to draw the broader contours of the position from Russia's perspectives. "I will put it simply, came Trump, and says -- 'I want a peace deal'. US officials approached us and we had a very good meeting in Saudi Arabia, and we saw that Americans now are prepared to not only listen but also hear. And, we also see (Ukraine President Volodymyr) Zelenskyy and we also see Ukraine, and we also see the Europeans, who continue on that belligerent path. They are speaking about the need for ..

India imports Russian oil worth 49 bn euro in 3rd year of Ukraine invasion

India, the world's third largest oil consuming and importing nation, bought crude oil worth 49 billion euros from Russia in the third year of Moscow's invasion of Ukraine, a global think tank said. India, which has traditionally sourced its oil from the Middle East, began importing a large volume of oil from Russia soon after the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. This is primarily because Russian oil was available at a significant discount to other international benchmarks due to western sanctions and some European countries shunning purchases. This led to India's imports of Russian oil seeing a dramatic rise, growing from less than 1 per cent of its total crude oil imports to a staggering 40 per cent in a short period. "Russia's stronghold over new markets has solidified in the third year of the invasion. The three biggest buyers, China (EUR 78 billion), India (EUR 49 billion) and Turkey (EUR 34 billion) were responsible for 74 per cent of Russia's total revenues from fossil ..
