Portugal reiterates its support for India's permanent seat in UNSC

Portugal has reiterated its support for India's bid for permanent membership in a reformed UN Security Council, the Ministry of External Affairs said on Tuesday. Briefing the media on the conclusion of President Droupadi Murmu's two-day State Visit to Portugal, Secretary (West) Tanmaya Lal said that both countries are cooperating at various multilateral fora, including the United Nations. "During the visit, Portuguese leadership reiterated its support for permanent membership of India at the United Nations Security Council," he said. India has been at the forefront of efforts at the UN to push for urgent long-pending reform of the Security Council, emphasising that it rightly deserves a place at the UN high table as a permanent member. India argues that the 15-nation council founded in 1945 is not fit for purpose in the 21st Century and does not reflect contemporary geo-political realities. Lal said Portugal contributes very strongly to the India-EU strategic Partnership and ...

India and Russia have decided to step up joint efforts in dealing with challenges of radicalisation and terror financing. Ways to deepen cooperation in tackling threats of terrorism were discussed at a meeting of the India-Russia joint working group (JWG) on counter-terrorism cooperation. At a separate meeting on issues relating to the United Nations, Russia reiterated its support for India as a permanent member of a reformed UN Security Council. The meeting took place in Moscow on December 19 and 20. "In the 13th JWG on counter-terrorism, both sides shared their experiences in countering terrorism including cross-border terrorism, extremism and agreed to enhance cooperation to address problems of radicalisation as well as terror financing," the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Saturday. India presents extensive model on behalf of G4 nations for UNSC reform

India has presented a detailed model on behalf of the G4 nations for Security Council reform that includes new permanent members elected democratically by the General Assembly and displays flexibility on the veto issue. Participating in the Intergovernmental Negotiations on Security Council reform (IGN) on Thursday, India's Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj said the UN's 80th anniversary next year serves as a milestone to achieve concrete progress on the long-pending subject. Kamboj presented the G-4 model' on behalf of Brazil, Germany, Japan and India for debate, dialogue and finally negotiations. The proposals elicited strong support from wider UN members. The realities of 1945, when the Council was established, have long been superseded by the geo-political realities of the modern era and a new century; with the need for change being felt across the board, Kamboj said as she shared the exhaustive G4 model with UN Member States in the General ...

'Terror attacks declined after Pakistan's inclusion in FATF grey list'

Major terror attacks in Jammu and Kashmir declined after Pakistan was included in the Financial Action Task Force's (FATF) grey list, a senior Indian government official said here on Friday. The United Nations Security Council's Counter-Terrorism Committee should examine this correlation, said joint secretary Safi Rizvi. Making a presentation at a special meeting of the UNSC panel, which India is hosting, Rizvi, however, did not name Pakistan at any point. But he noted that after the chances of Pakistan getting delisted from the grey list increased, terrorist activities too increased. Jammu and Kashmir recorded five attacks on 'hard targets' -- well-defended places like government offices, military and police camps -- in 2014, eight attacks in 2015 and 15 in 2016. The number fell to eight in 2017 and declined further to three in 2018, Rizvi said. In 2019, there was a very big aberration in the form of the Pulwama attack while in 2020, no hard target was attacked, the official ...
