Army chief reaches Jammu to review security as terror activities rise

Army Chief Gen Upendra Dwivedi on Saturday reached here to review security situation at a meeting in Jammu and Kashmir amidst growing terror activities in parts of otherwise peaceful Jammu region. This was the second visit of the army chief to Jammu in less than three weeks after taking charge as the 30th chief of the Indian Army on June 30. Nine army personnel, including a captain, were killed in two separate terror attacks in remote forest belts of Machedi in Kathua and Desa forest in Doda on July 8 and July 15. The army chief will chair a high level security review meeting at police headquarters here which will be attended by top officers of police, army, paramilitary and intelligence, officials said. They said senior officers of defence and Home ministry are also likely to attend the meeting. Two soldiers injured in encounter with terrorists in J-K's Doda district

Two soldiers were injured in an encounter with terrorists in a forest village in Jammu and Kashmir's Doda district early Thursday, officials said. The encounter took place at Jaddan Bata village in Kastigarh area around 2:00 am when terrorists opened fire on a temporary security camp established in a government school for the ongoing search operations, the officials said. They said security forces retaliated and the exchange of fire between the two sides continued for more than an hour. Two soldiers suffered minor injuries in the terrorist firing, the officials said, adding efforts are on to flush out the terrorists. A massive search operation was launched in Desa and adjoining forest areas following the killing of four army personnel, including a captain, by terrorists in a firefight on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday. SC seeks Centre's response on Nagaland govt plea to prosecute 30 armymen

The Supreme Court has sought responses from the Centre and the Ministry of Defence on a plea of the Nagaland government challenging denial of sanction to prosecute 30 Army personnel, who were accused of killing 13 civilians in a botched-up operation to ambush militants in the state in 2021. A bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, on Monday, took note of the submissions of the state government and issued notices to the Centre and the Union Ministry of Defence. The bench has now fixed the plea of Nagaland on September 3. In April last year, the Central government had denied sanction to prosecute the Army men who were allegedly involved in the botched up ambush at Oting in Mon district of the state. The state government has filed the writ petition under Article 32 of the Constitution. A plea under this Article can be filed alleging violation of fundamental rights. The security forces launched a joint search operation following suspected movement of two persons in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch district on Tuesday, officials said. The troops are already on high alert along the border line and hinterland in the border district, they said. Search operation launched in Jammu following reports of suspicious movement

Security forces launched a search operation in the border belt of Jammu district on Friday after information was received about suspicious movement in the area, officials said. The forces are on high alert and have asked people to share any details of suspected movements in their areas. A joint search operation was launched by Army, police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in Guda Patan and Kana Chak areas near the Chenab river in the Akhnoor border belt this morning after some people informed police about the suspicious movement of three persons in the area, the officials said. The security forces have scanned agricultural fields, villages and adjoining scattered habitation, they said. The operation is underway.

The chiefs of CISF, BSF and CRPF on Thursday said 10 per cent posts of soldiers will be reserved in their respective forces for former Agniveers in line with a decision by the Union home ministry. DRDO sanctions 7 new projects for key military assets to private sector

India's premier defence research organisation DRDO has awarded seven new projects to private entities to develop key military assets including underwater launched unmanned aerial vehicle and long-range remotely operated systems. The projects were cleared under the defence ministry's Technology Development Fund scheme to boost domestic defence manufacturing. The project for underwater-launched unmanned aerial vehicles is aimed at developing versatile marine battlefield accessories which can be deployed in multiple combat roles, officials said. The objective is part of a larger framework of intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) and maritime domain awareness (MDA), they said.
