Ireland's PM condemns anti-immigrant protesters who rampaged through Dublin

Ireland's prime minister on Friday condemned anti-immigrant protesters who rampaged through central Dublin after three young children were stabbed, saying the rioters simply wanted to cause chaos, not protect the country's way of life. Police arrested 34 people overnight after up to 500 people looted shops, set fire to vehicles and threw rocks at crowd control officers equipped with helmets and shields. The violence began after rumours circulated that a foreign national was responsible for the attack outside a Dublin school on Thursday afternoon. Prime Minister Leo Varadkar said Ireland's capital had endured two attacks one on innocent children and the other on our society and the rule of law. These criminals did not do what they did because they love Ireland, they did not do what they did because they wanted to protect Irish people, they did not do it out of any sense of patriotism, however warped, Varadkar told reporters on Friday morning. They did so because they're filled with

Ireland wants to further deepen strong economic, cultural ties with India

The Irish government wants to further deepen its strong economic and cultural relationship with India as part of its renewed Asia Pacific strategy launched this week, Deputy Prime Minister Micheal Martin has said. Ireland's Asia Pacific Strategy had a target of EUROS 100 billion in trade with the region by 2025, which has been exceeded two years ahead of time. We have a strong economic relationship but also a strong cultural relationship (with India), Martin told reporters in Dublin on Tuesday. We want to deepen that and we're launching our Asia Pacific strategy to support our continued ambitions to expand across Asia Pacific, which will fuel economic growth into the future across the world, Martin, also Ireland's Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Defence, said. The Tanaiste, as the Deputy Prime Minister is known in Ireland, swapped roles with the country's Indian-origin Prime Minister (Taoiseach), Leo Varadkar, as part of their coalition arrangement at the end of last

Population can't be collateral damage in Israel-Gaza conflict: Irish Dy PM

The innocent population of Palestinians cannot be collateral damage as Israel pursues its right to go after Hamas, Ireland's Deputy Prime Minister has warned even as he admitted different strands of opinion within the European Union (EU) on the Israeli-Palestinian issue. In an interaction on the sidelines of the Global Ireland Summit in Dublin on Tuesday, Micheal Martin told reporters that Europe is united in condemning Hamas but any Israeli response has to be within the parameters of humanitarian law. Martin, also Ireland's Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Defence who has just returned to the Irish capital after a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Luxembourg, called for an immediate pause in hostilities to allow humanitarian aid to flow into the region. I unreservedly condemn the attack by Hamas on Israel. Israel absolutely has the right to self-defence; to defend itself and its people in response to this heinous attack by Hamas, said Martin. The issue is how, what .

Bank of Ireland glitch allowed customers to withdraw money they didn't have

Some Bank of Ireland customers were able to withdraw money they did not have Tuesday and early Wednesday after an hours-long technical glitch that also halted many of the bank's online services. The outage allowed some customers to transfer and withdraw funds above their normal limits, the Bank of Ireland said. Customers could withdraw up to 500 ($546) with their Bank of Ireland card, the bank confirmed to The Associated Press Wednesday. They could also transfer funds from their Bank of Ireland account to a different account and withdraw up to 1,000 (USD 1,091), the bank said. As word spread on social media, images and video footage appeared to show people lining up at ATMs in hopes of receiving the free money. As more people appeared to arrive at ATMs in large numbers on Tuesday, images of police standing on guard close by began to appear on social media. An Garda Sochna, Ireland's national police, said it was aware of an unusual volume of activity at some ATMs across the country

Irish regulators fine Meta $414 million for online privacy violations

Irish regulators on Wednesday hit Facebook parent Meta with hundreds of millions in fines for online privacy violations and banned the company from forcing European users to agree to personalised ads based on their online activity. Ireland's Data Protection Commission imposed two fines totalling 390 million euros (USD 414 million) in its decision in two cases that could shake up Meta's business model targeting users with ads based on what they do online. The watchdog fined Meta 210 million euros for violations of the European Union's strict data privacy rules involving Facebook and an additional 180 million euros for breaches involving Instagram. It's the commission's latest punishment for Meta for data privacy infringements, following four other fines for the company since 2021 that total more than 900 million euros. The decision stems from complaints filed in May 2018 when the 27-nation EU's privacy rules, known as the General Data Protection Regulation, or GDPR, took ...

British PM Rishi Sunak seeks thawed relations at UK-Ireland summit

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is aiming to repair frayed relations with Britain's European Union neighbours and with highly skeptical leaders in Scotland and Wales when he attends a summit of leaders from across the UK and Ireland on Thursday. It's the first time since 2007 that a UK leader has gone to the British Irish Council, which brings together government representatives from the UK, Ireland and semi-autonomous administrations in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Self-governing British dependencies the Channel Islands and Isle of Man are also represented at the council, which was set up after Northern Ireland's 1998 peace agreement. Sunak's office said he would urge political leaders to be pragmatic and work together in our shared interests. Let's deliver for all our people across these great islands and build a future defined not by division, but by unity and hope, he said. It's a marked change of tone if not yet of substance from Britain's Conservative government. Su

Death toll rises to 9 in explosion at gas station in Ireland village

The death toll in an explosion at a gas station in a small village in northwest Ireland has risen to nine, police said on Saturday, as emergency workers combed piles of rubble for more victims. Irish police said they did not expect to find more survivors from Friday's explosion in Creeslough, County Donegal. Eight people are in hospitals after a blast tore through the Applegreen service station in the community of about 400 people. The search and recovery for further fatalities continues," said the police force, An Garda Siochana. The cause of the blast is under investigation. Emergency responders from Ireland and neighbouring Northern Ireland are involved in what police said was now a search and recovery operation. Sniffer dogs combed the debris, and a mechanical digger lifted piles of rubble from the site. The explosion levelled the gas station building, which holds the main shop and post office for the village, and damaged an adjacent residential building. Irish Prime Minister

UK, Ireland signal new hope of deal to end grinding Brexit trade feud

Britain and Ireland hailed a new spirit of compromise on Friday in a grinding feud over post-Brexit trade rules, expressing hope of making enough progress in the next three weeks to avoid a destabilising new election in Northern Ireland. It comes as new British Prime Minister Liz Truss seeks to improve relations with the UK's neighbours after the country's long, acrimonious divorce from the European Union. UK Northern Ireland Secretary Chris Heaton-Harris said Britain and the EU were negotiating in good faith and good humour a marked contrast from the bitter tone that has marred relations since the UK voted for Brexit in 2016. Speaking to reporters in London after a meeting of the British-Irish Intergovernmental Conference, he said he was very positive about the chances of getting a negotiated solution. Irish Foreign Minister Simon Coveney said political leadership is about making things happen and sometimes surprising people, and I think that's what we need to do over the next fe
