Heavy rain pounds northcentral Japan still recovering from deadly quake

Heavy rain pounded Japan's northcentral region of Noto on Saturday which triggered landslides and swollen rivers to overflow, flooding homes and stranding some residents in the region still recovering from a deadly earthquake earlier this year. The Japan Meteorological Agency issued the highest level of heavy rain across several cities in the Ishikawa prefecture, including the worst-hit Wajima where authorities said one person was missing. At least 12 rivers in Ishikawa breached their banks as of late Saturday morning, according to the Land and Infrastructure Ministry. Residents were urged to use maximum caution against possible mudslides and building damage. Up to 20 centimeters (7.8 inches) of rainfall is predicted in the region within the next 24 hours through Sunday noon, due to the rainbands that cause torrential rain above the Hokuriku region, JMA said. So far, there have been no reports of injuries from the heavy rain. But many homes were flooded and some residents in two ..

India seeks investment from S Korea, Japan to set up shipbuilding clusters

India is seeking investments and technology transfer from South Korea and Japan to establish shipbuilding and ship repair clusters to promote the domestic shipping supply chain in the country, according to a senior government official. Currently, India holds less than 1 per cent of the global shipbuilding market, dominated by China, South Korea, and Japan. "We are looking at South Korea and Japan for investments and technology transfer for establishing shipbuilding and ship repair clusters in India," TK Ramachandran, Secretary in Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW), told a group of journalists here. Ramachandran was in Goa to participate in the 20th Maritime State Development Council (MSDC), where plans for a mega shipbuilding park, spanning multiple states, were discussed. Asian markets dip after Wall Street had its worst week in nearly 18 months

Asian stocks fell Monday after another rout hit Wall Street on Friday, as a highly anticipated update on the US job market came in weak enough to add to worries about the economy. The Nikkei 225 index was hovering around its lowest level in almost a month during morning trading, and it slipped 0.5 per cent to close at 36,215.75. Japan's gross domestic product grew by an annualised 2.9 per cent in the second quarter, according to revised data from the Cabinet Office released on Monday. This was below expectations. Any broader risk aversion may have an amplified effect on Japanese equities, with safe-haven flows potentially supporting the yen, which is looked upon as negative for the country's exporters, Yeap Jun Rong, market strategist at IG, said in a commentary. The US dollar was trading at less than 143 Japanese yen in Monday trading. Stocks in Chinese markets also racked up losses after worse-than-expected inflation data disappointed investors.
