Japan's central bank opted Friday to keep its benchmark interest rate at minus 0.1% but said it will fine-tune its bond purchases to allow greater flexibility. The Bank of Japan said that extremely high uncertainties for the economy and prices required a more nimble approach than its previous policy. It said it would offer to buy 10-year Japanese government bonds at 1% each business day, instead of the upper limit of 0.5% that was imposed under its yield curve control program. It said its aim is still to keep long-term interest rates near zero percent. The BOJ has been under pressure to adjust its policies as Federal Reserve and other major central banks have raised interest rates to curb inflation. Japan's inflation rate has lagged those in the U.S. and Europe but is now over 3%, adding to those pressures. Meanwhile, the gap between Japan's negative benchmark rate and rates in the U.S. has caused the Japanese yen to weaken against the U.S. dollar, adding to price pressures in Jap

China's government appealed to Japan on Monday not to disrupt the semiconductor industry after curbs on exports of Japanese chip-making technology took effect, adding to technology restrictions Washington and its allies have imposed on China on security grounds. The Japanese restrictions that took effect Sunday limit Chinese access to tools for etching microscopically small circuits on advanced chips for smartphones, artificial intelligence and other applications. The Netherlands also joined the United States in limiting access to chipmaking tools that Washington says could be used to develop weapons. We are deeply dissatisfied and regret the act, said a foreign ministry spokesperson, Mao Ning. She urged Japan to prevent relevant measures from interfering with the normal semiconductor industry cooperation between the two countries. The ruling Communist Party has invested billions of dollars in building Chinese chip foundries but needs Western and Japanese technology to produce the .
Senior officials from Japan, the US and South Korea condemned North Korea over its recent ICBM-class ballistic missile launches and vowed to step up their trilateral cooperation to strengthen deterrence and sanctions against the North, while stressing the need for dialogue with Pyongyang. Their meeting Thursday in the central Japanese city of Karuizawa comes days after North Korea's solid-fuel ICBM launch last week, which landed in the water off the western coast of Japan's northern main island of Hokkaido and one day after the launch of two missiles on Wednesday. The US special representative for North Korea, Sung Kim, also said that the United States was working hard to gather information about an American soldier who fled to the North earlier this month. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Thursday lauded former Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe for envisioning the QUAD, and said it was the "only way" the countries concerned could have reacted to the present global situation. Jaishankar said Abe tried to engage with India with a certain purpose. "Abe was actually a person who foresaw a world beyond alliances...Japan is a country whose security and prosperity is secured by its alliance institutions. So that is the bedrock on which Japanese policies are based. The genius of Abe was to understand that, and yet to know...look for options, explore possibilities, he said. He was speaking at the launch of the book, "The Importance of Shinzo Abe, India, Japan and the Indo-Pacific", edited by Sanjaya Baru, who served as the media advisor to then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh between 2004 and 2008. Jaishankar credited Abe for the creation of QUAD, a strategic security dialogue between Australia, India, Japan and the United States. "S

Decline in Chinese garment exports to Japan provides an immense opportunity for the Indian apparel industry to boost shipments to the island nation, AEPC said on Wednesday. The Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) said a strong Indian garment industry with its unique offerings has a huge scope for Japanese trading companies to source from India. Members of the council are participating in the 12th edition of the India Tex Trends Fair in Tokyo. Speaking at the inauguration of the fair, AEPC Chairman Naren Goenka said over 180 Indian exhibitors are participating in the fair. Apparel imports into Japan have witnessed a positive mark in the last three years. Japan's total import from the world, which was USD 28.49 billion in 2018, has now risen to USD 46.72 billion, he said adding Japan is the fourth largest garment importer in the world after the US, Germany and France. Out of the total garment import of USD 23 billion by Japan, India's share is just one per cent. We hold a stron
