Ranchi in Jharkhand reports state's first Covid case in current wave

Jharkhand's capital Ranchi on Sunday registered the state's first COVID-19 case of the current wave as a person who had recently returned from Mumbai tested positive for the infection, a senior health official said. The infected person is being treated at a private hospital here, he said. "Today, we received the official confirmation of the first COVID-19 case in Ranchi of the current wave. His condition is stable and he is not showing any other complications," Ranchi Civil Surgeon Dr Prabhat Kumar told PTI. Kumar said that a check-up drive would be carried out in Ranchi from Monday. Two Maoists killed in gunfight in Jharkhand

Two Maoists, including JJMP supremo Pappu Lohra, who was carrying a bounty of Rs 10 lakh on his head, were killed in a gunfight with security forces in Jharkhand's Latehar district on Saturday morning, police said. Lohra, the chief of the Jharkhand Jan Mukti Parishad (JJMP), a Maoist splinter group, and his associate were killed during an anti-Naxal operation, conducted jointly by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the Jharkhand Police, in a forest under the Latehar Police Station limits, a senior officer said. No deputy speaker in eight state assemblies, says think tank report

Amid a debate over the absence of a deputy speaker in the Lok Sabha, data compiled by a think tank shows eight state assemblies not having anyone in the position, with Jharkhand not electing one for more than 20 years. According to a report on the Annual Review of State Laws, 2024, released by PRS Legislative Research, state assemblies sat for an average of 20 days, amounting to an average of 100 hours in total, last year. Article 178 of the Constitution requires state assemblies to choose two members as speaker and deputy speaker as soon as possible, according to the report. Assemblies of eight states and Union territories did not have a deputy speaker as of April 2025, the think tank said in the report. The list includes Jharkhand, which has not elected a deputy speaker for more than 20 years. Adani Power's outstanding on Bangladesh stands at around $900 mn: CFO

Adani Power has to receive around USD 900 million (around Rs 7,500 crore) from Bangladesh where the company supplies electricity from its Godda Power plant in Jharkhand, a company official said. "As of now, the total billing we (Adani Power) have done so far is around USD 2,000 million. We have already received USD 1,207 million out of this and we have also billed LPS (late payment surcharge) of USD 136 million," the company's Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Dilip Jha said in an earnings call. So, as of now, on gross basis including LPS, the company's outstanding is around USD 900 million, he said. On company's capex plan, Jha said the company has planned Rs 13,307 crore towards expansion capex for FY26, up from Rs 8,000 crore already incurred in FY25. Jharkhand achieves over 86% revenue collection target in FY25: Minister

Jharkhand Finance Minister Radhakrishna Kishore on Wednesday said that the state collected Rs 92,189.10 crore in revenue during the 2024-25 financial year (FY'25), achieving 86.16 per cent of the Rs 1,06,999.57 crore target. Including non-tax receipts, the overall collection reached Rs 1,03,469.82 crore against a target of Rs 1,28,900 crore, he said. Kishore said that the overall collection was "satisfactory", considering the impact of two electionsLok Sabha and assembly pollsheld last year, which affected revenue mop-up. According to data provided by the minister, the share of central taxes mopped up till March 2025 was Rs 42,557.30 crore, achieving 105.50 per cent of the estimated collection of Rs 40,338.22. The state received Rs 9,063 crore in grants-in-aid, which is only 53.43 per cent of the Rs 16,961 crore target, he said. 8 Naxals including one with bounty of Rs 1 cr killed in J'khand encounter

Eight Naxals, including a top rung central committee member of the extremists carrying a bounty of Rs 1 crore on his head, were killed in an encounter with CoBRA commandos of the CRPF and police in Bokaro district of Jharkhand on Monday, officials said. The exchange of fire started around 5.30 am in Lugu Hills of Lalpania area of the district, they said. The troops of 209 Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) along with state police conducted the operation in which eight Naxals were killed and an AK series rifle, three INSAS rifles, a self-loading rifle (SLR), eight country-made guns and a pistol were seized, officials said. 8 Naxals killed in encounter with security forces in Jharkhand's Bokaro

Eight Naxals were killed in an encounter with CoBRA commandos of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and police in Bokaro district of Jharkhand on Monday morning, officials said. The exchange of fire started around 5.30 am in Lugu Hills of Lalpania area of the district, they said. The troops of 209 Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) conducted the operation in which eight Naxals were killed and an AK series rifle, three INSAS rifles, a self-loading rifle (SLR), eight country-made guns and a pistol were seized, the officials said. No injuries have been reported among the security personnel, they said. The CoBRA is the special jungle warfare unit of the CRPF.

Received Rs 5,990 cr grants under SC, ST sub-plans in 3 years: J'khand govt

Jharkhand Finance Minister Radha Krishna Kishore on Monday claimed that the state received Rs 5,990.6 crore in grants under sub-plans for Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) over the past three years since 2021-22. He alleged that the central government had reduced funding under the SC and ST sub-plans over the past decade, and the grants allocated to the state were meagre in proportion to the population of tribal and Dalit communities in the state. "In Jharkhand, the SC population is 39 lakh and the ST population is 86 lakh. Between 2021-22 and 2023-24, the state received Rs 3,515.11 crore under the ST sub-plan and Rs 2,475.49 crore under the SC sub-plan," Kishore said while addressing the media at the Congress headquarters here. He added, "A mere Rs 5,990.6 crore has been received over three years, whereas the state should have received at least Rs 10,000 crore for the special component plans, proportional to the SC and ST population in the state." 2 drivers killed, 4 injured as two goods trains collide in Jharkhand

Two persons were killed and four others injured in a collision between two goods trains in Jharkhand's Sahebganj district in the early hours of Tuesday, police said. The collision between the two trains, operated by power major NTPC, happened around 3 am near Bhognadih in Barhait police station area, they said. The tracks on which the accident happened are also owned by NTPC and mainly used for transporting coal to its power plants. "The drivers of both the goods trains were killed in the head-on collision," Sub-Divisional Police Officer of Sahebganj Kishore Tirkey told PTI. Eastern Railway spokesperson Kausik Mitra said, "The goods trains and the track both belong to the NTPC. It has nothing to do with the Indian Railways." Maiyan Samman Yojana in J'khand extended for non-Aadhaar beneficiaries

Beneficiaries who have not linked their bank accounts to Aadhaar will continue to get Jharkhand Mukhyamantri Maiyan Samman Yojana (JMMSY) assistance till March 31, an official said. A meeting of the state cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Hemant Soren, decided to extend the deadline till March from December 31, she said. "The cabinet has approved a partial amendment in the implementation of the Maiyan Samman Yojana. Following this amendment, women applicants whose single bank accounts are not linked to Aadhaar will receive monetary assistance until March. After March, the amount will only be provided to Aadhaar-linked bank accounts," Cabinet Secretary Vandana Dadel said. Centre wants states to take responsibility, check illegal coal mining

The Centre on Wednesday said it is the responsibility of state governments to stop all kinds of illegal coal mining, including rat-hole, underlining that it is working in close coordination with states to lower the number of accidents in coal fields. Govt to initiate action to realise Rs 1.36 trn pending dues: J'khand FM

The Jharkhand government will initiate legal action to realise its "Rs 1.36 lakh crore dues" pending with the Centre, Finance Minister Radhakrishna Kishore informed the assembly on Monday. Kishore made the assertion while presenting the state budget of Rs 1.45 lakh crore in the House. Earlier, during Question Hour, Excise Minister Yogendra Prasad, however, said that a joint committee has been formed comprising representatives of the Centre and the state to evaluate the exact outstanding amount. The state government has been claiming for several years that the Centre owes Rs 1.36 lakh crore to the state in lieu of coal mined by entities such as Coal India Ltd.
