Jaya Shree Textiles, a unit of Grasim Industries Ltd, today said it has issued a notice for lockout at the Rishra factory. The lockout, which comes into effect from today, will continue till further notice, Grasim Industries said in an exchange filing. The unit provides direct employment to around 5,500 people, it had said in a release in December. "Over the years, the factory has been faced with unjustifiable labour disturbances," the release had said. The Rishra unit also faced a flash strike in May. The lockout will not have any material impact on the overall business of the company, the exchange filing said. There was no reaction from the West Bengal Labour Department regarding the issue.

People across the state faced inconvenience as contractual employees of the state-owned Punjab Roadways went on a day-long strike today in support of various demands, including regularisation of their services and raise in salaries. The protestors did not let buses of Punjab Roadways and Punbus ply in several places, including Ludhiana, Amritsar, Ferozepur, Moga and Jalandhar, forcing passengers to opt for private buses or taxies. Nearly 3,000 contractual employees of the Punjab Roadways and the Punbus are on strike and around 1,800 buses off the roads, protesting employees said. Bus services on the inter-state routes and within the state were affected, they claimed. "We have been fighting for our rights for the past several years. An Indian expatriate, who lost both his hands and legs to an infection caused after an accident during work in the UAE, has received 202,000 dirhams (USD 54,994) as compensation from his employer after the intervention of the Indian mission in Abu Dhabi, according to a media report. Gurbinder Singh, who hails from Punjab and worked as a crane operator for a private company in Abu Dhabi, had injured his knee and was diagnosed with serious medical condition resulting in amputation of both his hands and legs. Even before he was discharged from the hospital, Singh was terminated from his job with a final settlement of 5,750 dirhams, Khaleej Times reported. After getting to know about the case, the Indian embassy in Abu Dhabi held discussions with Singh's employer and after a series of follow-ups by embassy officials, the company raised the settlement amount to 202,000 dirhams, the paper reported. The Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) today claimed to have busted a child-trafficking racket in Araria district with the arrest of two persons and rescued six boys. The rescued boys were in the age-group of 10-16 years, a SSB officer said. "Acting on a tip-off, we conducted a search operation yesterday evening, along with a number of child rights bodies, close to the Indo-Nepal border. At about 7 pm, we noticed two middle-aged men moving towards the Jogbani police station along with the six children", Sanjit Samajhdar, Sub-Inspector SSB, said. Both the persons were detained. During interrogation they revealed that the children were being taken to Delhi where they were to be employed as workers in a toy factory, Samajdhar said. The duo was subsequently taken to Jogbani police station where a case was registered against them under the Child Labour Act, the sub-inspector said adding that all the six children have been handed over to Child Line, Araria.

The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) has sacked 1,010 contractual employees for taking part in a strike earlier this month. The action was a stern warning to employees that such acts of indiscipline will not be tolerated, an MSRTC official said. "These contractual employees had nothing to do with the demands of those who had called for the strike," he said. The sacked employees had been appointed on the contract basis barely two months ago. They will be replaced by candidates on the waiting list, said the official. Most of these employees were working as driver-cum conductors. Thousands of MSRTC employees had gone on a strike on June 8 and 9, demanding salary hike.
