Trump administration reconfirms its intent to rescind H4 rule

The Trump administration has reconfirmed its intent to rescind H-4 rule regarding employment authorisation to certain spouses of H-1B visas, popular among Indian IT professionals. The move will have a major impact on Indian-American women as they are the major beneficiary of the Obama-era rule. "Removing H-4 Dependent Spouses From the Class of Aliens Eligible for Employment Authorization," said the Department of Homeland Security's Unified Agenda in the federal register notification of its semi-annual regulatory agenda. As per the notification published Monday, the Department of Homeland Security is proposing to remove from its regulations certain H-4 spouses of H-1B nonimmigrants as a class of aliens eligible for employment authorisation. Telangana CM to meet PM on June 15 over state's issues

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao would meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 15 to discuss various issues concerning the state. The meeting would take place at 12.30 pm and Rao would leave for New Delhi tomorrow, the Chief Minister's Office said here today. "The CM will discuss several issues pertaining to the state," it said. The state government has been taking up several issues, including Centre's nod for increasing reservation for backward sections among Muslims and Scheduled Tribes, linking rural employment scheme NREGA with agriculture, minimum support price for various crops and the new zonal system vis-a-vis government employment. Domestic workers to be registered to provide benefits of welfare schemes: Pb minister

All domestic workers in Punjab will be registered with the State Social Security Board and they will be extended benefits under various social security and welfare schemes being run by the state government. The decision was taken in the maiden meeting of the State Social Security Board for unorganized workers held here today under the chairmanship of Punjab Labour Minister Balbir Singh Sidhu. The minister said till date there was no provision for registration of domestic workers, which left them out of the ambit of welfare schemes of the state government. They are also subjected to exploitation and maltreatment at the hands of their employers, he said after the meeting. After registration of the domestic workers with the State Social Security Board, they will be provided a unique identity card which will be linked to their Aadhaar number, Balbir Singh Sidhu was quoted as saying in an official release. No provision for jobs on compassionate ground in municipal bodies: WB govt to HC

The West Bengal government today told the Calcutta High Court that there is no provision for giving jobs on compassionate ground in municipal bodies of the state. Parul Das (nee Barui) and 13 others, whose father or mother died while working at Kulti Municipality in the state, moved the high court seeking direction to the state government to give jobs to them on compassionate ground. Government pleader Joyotosh Majumdar submitted on behalf of the state before Justice Debangshu Basak that except in the Panchayat department, there is no scheme for appointment of dependents of staff who died in harness in any state undertaking or municipal body. WCD Ministry expands ChildLine to 435 locations, key railway stations

On the occasion of World Day Against Child Labour today, the Ministry of Women and Child Development said it had expanded ChildLine -- the nationwide emergency helpline for children in distress -- to 435 locations and key railway stations, calling it a contributing factor towards curbing the menace of child labour. It said ChildLine received 1.8 crore calls every year since 2014. "We have expanded childline to 435 locations and key railway stations, it's a great contributing factor in curbing child labour," the Ministry tweeted. JDA employees to get salaries as per 7th pay panel recommendations

Agitating staffers of the Jammu Development Authority (JDA), who were on strike since 18 days, will get salaries as per the seventh pay commission recommendations starting June. "Seventh pay commission benefits will be released by the vice chairman JDA in the salary of June along with the arrears," Minister Housing and Urban Development Sat Sharma said while addressing the employees here. Workplace foods may lead to unhealthy eating: Study

The food people get at work contributes to unhealthy eating as it tends to contain high amounts of sodium and refined grains, and very little whole grains and fruit, a US study has found. The results of the study of 5,222 employees across the US suggest that workplaces can play an important role to help ensure access to and promote healthier food options. "Our results suggest that the foods people get from work do not align well with the recommendations in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans," said Stephen Onufrak from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The study used data from the US Department of Agriculture Food Acquisition and Purchasing Survey (FoodAPS), a nationally representative household survey on food purchases and acquisitions during a seven-day study period. Government Takes Measures to Bring More Transparency In Employment Related Data Releases

Labour Bureau conducts two major surveys on employment scenario i.e Annual Employment-Unemployment Survey (EUS) and Quarterly Employment Survey. So far, five Annual Employment-Unemployment Surveys have been conducted by Labour Bureau and reports on all five surveys have been released. The field work of Sixth Annual Employment Unemployment Survey (2016-17) has been completed and data entry validation work is in progress. HC directs TN govt to issue orders on salary for contract nurses

The Madras High Court today directed the Tamil Nadu government to issue orders enhancing the monthly salary of contract nurses from Rs 7,700 to Rs 14,000 with an annual increment of Rs 500 within two weeks. The first bench of Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice PT Asha passed the interim orders on a PIL filed by N Ganesh, seeking to restrain the nurses from resorting to strikes demanding regularisation of their services. It then posted the matter to July 2 and asked the government to submit the compliance report on that date. Referring to the counter affidavit filed by Additional Secretary, Health and Family Welfare, U Anbu, the bench said, "We are informed that a proposal was sent to the Government of India for the revision of salary of the contract staff nurses and the Government of India has approved the same. Govt forms panel to look into jobs data calculation

The government has set up a technical committee under former chief statistician TCA Anant to bring in more transparency in jobs data calculation and presentation, the labour ministry said today. The government has taken measures in recent past to bring in more transparency in data releases, it said in a release. "It (the ministry) would like to present a proper perspective on these issues so that the end users and public at large become aware of the processes involved in generation of these estimates, the release said. Ensure salary delays don't happen in future: AI pilots

Alleging lack of cooperation between Air India's commercial and finance departments as one of the reasons for the delay in salaries, one of its pilots' unions has urged the management to ensure that the situation is not repeated in future. The Indian Commercial Pilots Unions (ICPA) in a letter to Air India chairman and managing director Pradeep Singh Kharola, has also said that the "financial uncertainty is a source of frustration, anxiety and stress, and all of which affects the overall performance level of employees". Notably, the cash-crunch airline has delayed salary payments of its employees in May. The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) has revised the base years of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) to 2011-12 and for the Consumer Price Index (CPI) to 2012.For the IIP and CPI, the item baskets were revised to remove items that were no longer relevant and include those that had become relevant since the last base revision. For the National Account estimates, the new seriesis a structural breakaway from the old series, as it includes information sources which have newly become available or are more regular than the earlier ones. Some examples of these are the new information which is now available for the corporate sector, the estimates of the unorganised sector from the 2010-11 National Sample Survey on unincorporated enterprises and the data on sales and service taxes. All these have been used in the new series.
