The Supreme Court on Friday issued notices to the Centre and West Bengal Government seeking their responses in the alleged killing of three Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers in the state.The apex court was hearing a petition filed by BJP leader Gaurav Bhatia, who sought a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the matter.On May 30, an 18-year-old BJP worker named Tirlochan Mahato was found hanging from a tree in Purulia's Balarampur district. Month after this incident, another BJP worker, Dulal Kumar was found dead in a similar manner in the same district.On July 28, one more BJP leader, Shaktipada Sardar was hacked in West Bengal's Diamond Harbour area.The deaths of three BJP leaders had sparked an outrage in the state with the BJP blaming the Trinamool Congress for the attack.
Four unidentified men stabbed a 25-year-old man to death in a park in outer Delhi's Mangolpuri area, the police said today. The victim got into a quarrel with the four men after they snatched his belongings yesterday. The deceased identified as Rinku, a driver, was a resident of Budh Vihar Phase One, they said. In a complaint filed yesterday by a person named Vinod, it was alleged that Rinku had gone for a walk in the park at around 9 pm when suddenly, four men overpowered him. They snatched his cell phone and wallet following which he rushed to the main gate of the park, said a police officer. Police said Vinod was waiting outside the park for Rinku when the alleged incident occurred. Rinku used to work as a driver for Vinod. The victim immediately rushed to Vinod to narrate the incident. A high-level inquiry has been ordered into the alleged wrongful arrest of a journalist based in Rajasthan in connection with a case under the SC & ST Act lodged in a court here, a top police official said today. The Congress party's Dhanbad president Vaibhav Sinha and his two body guards were arrested today for allegedly keeping five men in captivity at his restaurant for extortion. Superintendent of Police Piyush Pandey told reporters that the arrest followed complaints that Sinha with the help of his two bodyguards allegedly thrashed the five youths who had gone to his restaurant and damaged their car as well after holding them captive. An appeals court has extended the jail term of former South Korean president Park Geun-hye by one year in connection to a massive corruption scandal.On April 6, the 66-year-old leader was sentenced to 24 years of imprisonment by the lower court, after she was found guilty of crimes ranging from bribery to coercion, abuse of power and the leaking of state secrets. A man was arrested on charges of domestic violence for mercilessly beating of his wife in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district today, police said. Sunita Devi (30), lodged a complaint with the police against her husband, Kuldip Raj (42), for locking her up in a small room of their house and beating her with a rod over a trivial matter yesterday, they said. The victim is severely injured and is admitted at the district hospital in Rajouri with fractures in her arm and leg, officials said. Taking note of the incident, police registered a case and arrested the accused from his house in Bagnoti village of Nowshera tehsil, they said. Further investigation was underway, police said.
Three people including a woman were arrested for their alleged involvement in the rape and blackmail of a student who later committed suicide, police said. The victim, pursuing her graduation, had blamed the trio for her death in the suicide note that she left behind. The arrests came after the victim's father lodged an FIR, they said. In his complaint, the father alleged that the accused woman was his daughter's friend and had secretly shared her photos with her accomplices. The men morphed the photos using an editing software and demanded sexual favours from the victim in return for not making her obscene photos public, the complaint said. They raped the victim on several occasions for months and drugged her as well, it alleged. The victim's body was handed over to her family after a post-mortem examination, deputy superintendent of police Sunil Kumar said. The suicide note has been sent to a forensic lab to check its authenticity and further investigation was on, he added.
A secretary of the Cooperative Service Society was caught red-handed by sleuths of the Punjab Vigilance Bureau while accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000, an official spokesman said today. According to a complaint lodged by Ajaib Singh, a resident Baran village in Patiala district, Gurtej Singh had demanded Rs 45,000 from him to waive his farm loan. Based on the complaint, the officials laid a trap and Gurtej Singh was caught red-handed while accepting the bribe, he said. A case was registered against the accused under the Prevention of Corruption Act, the spokesman added.
A Turkmenistani woman has been arrested by Customs officials for allegedly trying to smuggle into the country gold worth nearly Rs 27 lakh at the Delhi airport. The accused was intercepted on arrival from Turkmenistan last Friday, an official statement issued today said. "Her personal and baggage search resulted in the recovery of three chains of gold, collectively weighing 1 kg (market value Rs 27.09 lakh)," the Customs department said in the release. The gold was found to be concealed underneath a blue tape pasted on the locking handle of the trolley, which the passenger was using to carry her baggage, it said, adding that the woman was arrested and the gold seized.

The Delhi High Court today overturned the acquittal of 20 persons in the 2010 Mirchpur Dalit killing case while observing that instances of atrocities against Scheduled Castes have not abated even after 71 years of Independence. The high court also upheld the conviction of 13 persons by the trial court and enhanced the punishment of some of the convicts. A 60-year-old Dalit man and his physically challenged daughter were burnt alive by members of the Jat community in Mirchpur village in Haryana's Hisar district in April 2010. A 34-year-old man was arrested today for allegedly raping a minor girl in southwest Delhi's Rangapahari area, police said. The 11-year-old was allegedly raped when she had gone to relieve herself in a forest area in the locality on Wednesday, they said. The accused, identified as Prakash, a ragpicker, was arrested from the Nala camp area this morning and will be produced in court, officials said. The incident was reported to police yesterday, following which a case was registered, a senior officer said, adding that the minor victim was being counselled. According to the complaint lodged by the victim's father, who runs a small shop, she was with him on Wednesday and had gone to relieve herself in a forest area nearby. After some time, locals informed him that his daughter had been found near the forest area with her clothes torn, police said citing the complaint. The Supreme Court today reserved its verdict on a batch of pleas related to the issue of live streaming of court proceedings. A bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud said it would pass appropriate orders after Attorney General K K Venugopal suggested that live streaming of the important cases in the Chief Justice's court can be started on a pilot basis. The Attorney General said the process can be adopted in other court rooms depending on the success of the pilot project. During the hearing, one of the lawyers present in the courtroom opposed the suggestion of live streaming, saying this will have an implication on the administration of justice and also lead to "spreading of fake news". The top court, however, said that it aims to implement the concept of open courts which in turn would help reducing the crowd in the court.
