SC seeks WB govt's response on plea seeking CBI probe into killing of BJP workers

The Supreme Court today sought response from the West Bengal government on a plea seeking a CBI probe into the killing of three BJP workers in the state. A bench of Justices A K Sikri and Ashok Bhushan issued notice and sought response of the West Bengal government and CBI on a plea filed by BJP leader and advocate Gaurav Bhatia. Bhatia, appearing in person, said the three disturbing murders of Shaktipad Sarkar, Tirlochan Mahato and Dulal Kumar have taken place in the state but police have not registered FIR and their family members have been allegedly threatened. He said a CBI probe should be ordered and compensation of Rs 50 lakh should be directed to be given to the family members.He also sought security for family members of the victims. Body of 14-yr-old boy stoned to death found in UP's Muzaffarnagar

A 14-year-old boy has been stoned to death by unknown miscreants in the Ladhawala locality here, police said today. The victim, identified as Zuber, had gone missing last evening after leaving home to buy medicines, they said. Locals searching for the boy found his body in a vacant plot of land nearby, officials said. The body, bearing injuries suspected to have been caused with a brick, was sent for postmortem and an investigation launched, police said.

Girl raped for 6 months by relative, accused held: Police

A 15-year-old girl was repeatedly raped over a period of six months by one of her relatives on the promise of marriage, police said today. The girl, belonging to a village located within the Gadwar police station limits, was repeatedly raped over a period of six months by her brother-in-law, Govinda Chauhan, on the promise of marriage, the police said. The accused, however, refused to marry the girl after she got pregnant. The matter came to light after the girl's father lodged an FIR yesterday. The accused was arrested today and the victim sent to a hospital, the police said.

HC dismisses appeal of 15 convicts in Mirchpur village Dalits killing case

The Delhi High Court today dismissed the appeal of 15 persons belonging to the dominant Jat community against their conviction and sentencing in a case of burning alive a 70-year-old Dalit man and his physically-challenged daughter at Mirchpur village in Haryana's Hisar district in 2010. A bench of Justices S Muralidhar and I S Mehta said even after 71 years of Independence atrocities on Scheduled Castes community has shown no signs of abating. The court also directed the Haryana government to rehabilitate families belonging to the Dalit community who were displaced after the 2010 incident. The high court pronounced the verdict on the appeal of 15 persons challenging their conviction and sentence by a trial court in the case. The victims and the police had also appealed in the high court seeking enhancement of punishment awarded to the convicts and acquittal of others. 6 injured in clash between two groups

At least six people were injured in a clash between Dalits and Thakurs over a van parked on a road in a village here, police said today. The incident occurred at Madh Karimpur village under the Khatoli police station last night, they said, adding that four people were arrested. According to Circle Officer Rajiv Kumar Singh, a van belonging to a Dalit man was parked on a road. Asked to remove the vehicle, the man refused, which led to a clash between the Thakurs, the dominant caste in the village, and Dalits. Firearms were used during the clash, Singh said, adding that six persons -- Satpal, Ramesh, Ravi, Amit Kumar, Shiv Kumar and Rambhuj -- were injured in the incident and admitted to a hospital. A case was registered against 30 people in connection with the incident, the officer said, adding that four of the accused were arrested. 14-year-old girl found raped, killed in her house

A 14-year-old girl was found raped and killed by unidentified persons in her house at Bhiwandi near here in Maharashtra, police said today. The girl was alone at her home in the powerloom town of Bhiwandi at the time of the incident yesterday afternoon, Thane Police PRO Sukhada Narkar said. An offence under IPC sections 376 (rape) and 302 (murder) has been registered, she said, adding a manhunt has been launched for the culprits. However, it was not clear how many people were involved in the crime, which came to light when the victim's elder sister returned home in the evening, Narkar said. The accused entered the house when she was alone and allegedly raped her. They then severely beat her and drowned her in a water tub, Narkar said. A South Korean appeal court today extended ex-president Park Geun-hye's prison sentence for corruption and abuse of power by one year. The decision by the Seoul High Court means the former head of state, who was ousted after a sprawling graft scandal triggered mass protests, faces 25 years in jail in the case. Park was convicted in April of receiving or demanding more than $20 million from conglomerates, sharing secret state documents, "blacklisting" artists critical of her policies, and firing officials who resisted her abuses of power. Two convicted for 2007 Lucknow court blast case

A special court here today convicted two accused in connection with 2007 court blast case in the state capital. The Special Judge Babita Rani fixed August 27 for awarding quantum of sentence to the accused - Tariq Kajmi and Mohd Akhtar. The trial was conducted in the District Jail, Lucknow. The third accused in the case Khalid Mohammad had died during course of the trial. While, the fourth accused Sajjadur Rehman was earlier given clean chit. According to government lawyer M K Singh, the accused had been charge-sheeted for sedition, criminal conspiracy and attempted murder under the Indian Penal Code. The accused had also been booked under Explosive Substances Act and Prevention of Unlawful Activities Act. The prosecution produced 44 witnesses in support of its case while the defense examined its three witnesses. 2 booked for raping minor girl in Palamu

Two persons have been booked for allegedly gangraping a 16-year-old girl and making a video of the incident in Palamu district of Jharkhand, police said today. The incident happened under Lesliganj police station area on July 23 but the case was registered yesterday after the girl told her parents about it. According to the complaint, the girl was on her way to Satbarwa High School when the two accused, who knew her, offered to drop her. But they took her to an isolated area and raped her, police said Superintendent of Police Indrajeet Mahatha said the two accused video-graphed the incident and were blackmailing her. Mahatha said the accused have been identified and would be arrested soon. A medical examination of the girl was being done, he said. Relevant sections of IPC, IT Act and Pocso Act have been slapped against the accused, Mahatha added.

Delhi Police constable dismissed for honey trapping

A Delhi Police constable was dismissed from service in connection with his alleged involvement in a case of honey trapping and cheating, police said today. The action was taken on a complaint filed by a businessman on Tuesday alleging that the constable posted in Rohini's Vijay Vihar Police Station, along with a woman, honey trapped him and demanded Rs 7 lakh, they said. They even threatened the businessman to implicate him in a false case of rape if he did not pay the amount, a police officer said. In his statement to police, the businessman said he came in contact with the woman through Facebook and even met her couple of times in the city. Girl foils snatching bid, hands accused to police

A 22-year-old woman, who was out for her birthday shopping, became the victim of a snatching bid but despite sustaining injuries, she managed to catch hold of the accused and handed him over to police. The incident was reported from central Delhi's Paharganj yesterday. Police said they are investigating the matter. Tanya Sharma, an executive with a private firm, was out for her birthday shopping yesterday with her sister and mother when a man snatched her phone and handbag. Four held with huge quantity of intoxicants in Noida

Four persons were arrested after 440 kg of intoxicants were allegedly recovered from their possession here today, police said. They were held from the Dadri-Lal Kuan GT Road, under Bisrakh police station limits, while transporting the substance in a mini truck, the police said. The accused have been identified as Ankit, a resident of Ghaziabad, Robin from Bulandshahr, Omdutt and Khemchand, both from Hapur, a police official said. "Ten cartons containing a total of 440 kg 'Coco Pol' (a white powdered intoxicant) were seized from them and their vehicle impounded," the official said. According to the police, the four accused have been charged under Indian Penal Code section 414 (assisting in concealment of stolen property) among others.

12 held for gambling from Mehrauli

Twelve persons, including a woman were arrested from south Delhi's Mehrauli for allegedly indulging in gambling, police said here today. On the intervening night of August 22 and 23, a raid was conducted at a farmhouse in Meharuli and12 persons involved in gamblingwere caught left-handed, they said. One of the accused, a Nepali woman, was specially hired from Goato distribute playing cards and assist in gambling by the organiser Dinesh Kumar, the police said. A register was maintained for distribution of chips/coins among players, they said. 2 arrested for transporting beef in Jharkhand

Two burqa-clad persons were arrested for allegedly carrying beef in a car on station road under Bagbera police station in Jamshedpur in Jharkhand today, a police official said. Acting on a tip-off, a police team intercepted the car and seized 75 kg of the "banned meat" stuffed in two sacks, Superintendent of Police (City) Prabhat Kumar said. 5 arrested by anti-Romeo squads in Noida

Five persons were today arrested by the anti-Romeo squads of the police here in the city for allegedly harassing women and girls, officials said. An anti-Romeo drive was conducted by a team of officials from Sector-20 police station on the instructions of Gautam Buddh Nagar Senior Superintendent of Police Ajay Pal Sharma, they said. "The squad toured around schools, parks, shopping malls, bus stands, railway station, bazaar, coaching centres and other publics,a police official said. AFT rules promotion denied to Maj Gen in 1997, orders promotion to rank of Lt Gen

The Chandigarh Bench of the Armed Forces Tribunal today directed the government to promote a senior officer, Major General MMR Narang, to the rank of Lt General with all consequential benefits. Directing the promotion of the officer to the rank of Lt Gen, the AFT has also imposed costs of Rs 25,000 for depriving him of his well deserved promotion on "non-existent, rather false grounds". Two persons, including the victim's husband, were arrested today for allegedly raping a newly-married minor on Holi in March this year, police said. An official said that the incident happened on March 14 when the 17-year-old victim, along with her husband, had gone to a relative's place in Badlapur here. According to the complaint filed by her mother yesterday, a relative came and gagged the victim with a handkerchief and raped her in the presence of her husband who allegedly abetted the crime, the official said.
