Two people have been booked for allegedly throwing acid on a 32-year-old woman and severely injuring her in the Kavi Nagar area here, police said today. The victim, a dietician, suffered 50 per cent burn injuries to her face and body in the acid attack that happened last evening. She was undergoing treatment at a private hospital here, they said. According to a police complaint filed by the victim's husband, she was returning home on her scooty after dropping her four-year-old son at a coaching institute when two bikers threw acid on her, Deputy Superintendent of Police (CO City 2nd) Atish Kumar said. The husband named Rahul Garg, an acquaintance, as an accused in his complaint, Kumar said, adding that an FIR was registered in connection with the incident. The complainant also accused Garg of harassing and threatening his wife, the DSP said. The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) today demanded that the "brain" behind the murders of rationalists Narendra Dabholkar and Govind Pansare should be unearthed. The CBI, following the leads provided by the state police, claimed to have arrested last week one of the shooters who fired upon and killed Dabholkar in Pune in August 2013. "Dr Dabholkar murder case could not be solved for five years. After the accused in Gauri Lankesh and M M Kalburgi murders were caught by the police of the neighbouring state (Karnataka), Maharashtra police were able to tie up the loose ends (in Dabholkar case)," said the state NCP chief Jayant Patil here. Five persons, including two women, were arrested in Vaishali district today for beating up a sub-inspector of police and snatching his service revolver, a senior official said. Three inmates of a juvenile remand home escaped from the home in Jharkhand's Simdega district today, a senior police officer said. Superintendent of Police, Sanjeev Kumar said police investigation has been started to find out how the three juvenile convicts escaped from the remand home located in Simdega town. The SP placed under suspension two havildars and a constable who were on duty at the home when the three inmates escaped. The three inmates who escaped from the home were arrested a day before from Bano police station limit of the district on charges of motorcycle theft, sources said.

A local court today refused to grant bail to a 19-year-old man accused of being part of the mob that allegedly lynched a woman, saying that such cases are "too serious to merit any consideration of bail". Shanta Devi, a beggar, was lynched on June 26 on the suspicion of being a child lifter. The incident took place at Juna Vadaj locality when she was travelling in an autorikshaw. The police had arrested Hasmukh Solanki on July 2, after the CCTV footage of the incident purportedly showed him to be the part of the lynch mob. However, Solanki had moved the court seeking bail, saying he was being falsely implicated. He said he was a resident of the area where the incident took place. The accused said he was a vegetable vendor and his antecedents were clean, therefore he should be granted bail. The Maharashtra Police is probing whether the four men arrested on terror charges recently have links with any radical Hindu outfits, and it may question the head of one such organisation, Sanatan Sanstha, a senior official today said. Vaibhav Raut, who runs a cow protection outfit and was first to be arrested, claimed on his purported social media account that he was associated with the Sanatan Sanstha. A pet dog tried to rescue its owner when attempts were being made to allegedly gang rape a girl in Sagar district of Madhya Pradesh.The incident took place in Motinagar area on August 19 when a 14-year-old girl was allegedly abducted from outside her house by two men, Reshu Ahirwar and Puneet Ahirwar, who lived in the neighbourhood and took her to a secluded place to allegedly rape her.When the girl was allegedly being assaulted sexually by one of the perpetrators, she shouted for help. Alarmed by her screams, the dog came rushing to her and pounced on the accused and his accomplice.The pet dog did everything possible, biting, scratching with paws, to save the girl. The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet today paid glowing tributes to former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and observed a two minute silence as a mark of respect to the departed leader. The Cabinet meeting was presided over by Chief Minister Yogi Adityaraj, who condoled the death of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, government spokesman and minister Shrikant Sharma told reporters. The Cabinet also approved a draft bill proposing amending section 438 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) to restore certain provisions related to anticipatory bail in the state. The cabinet approved the draft of the bill which will be tabled in the coming monsoon session of the Assembly, Sharma said, adding that certain anticipatory bill provisions were withdrawn in 1976. The Delhi High Court today pulled up the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) for the manner in which it had removed encroachments from Neeti Bagh area, after the court received a letter from senior advocate Soli Sorabjee alleging that officers of the civic body were derelict in their duty. A bench of Chief Justice Rajendra Menon and Justice V K Rao said it has received a letter from Sorabjee regarding the work carried out by SDMC to remove the encroachments and the communication indicated "the manner in which the action was taken, the lacunae in it and how the officers were derelict in their duty". It gave a copy of the letter to the corporation to note the concerns and to take appropriate action to address them, saying if what Sorabjee has said was correct, the officers have not discharged their duty. The court directed the corporation to file an action taken report and said if not satisfied by the report, it "will take coercive action against the officers concerned". The bench .
A 62-year-old professor of a government college in Bilaspur district has been arrested for allegedly molesting a 20-year-old tribal student in his cabin earlier this month, the police said today. The accused Roop Chandra Agrawal is a professor of Sociology in the Government Agrasen College in Bilha near Bilaspur. On a tip-off, police traced the accused to the residence of his relative in Shakti town in neighbouring Janjgir-Champa district last night and apprehended him, a local police official said. Agrawal was absconding since August 8, after he was booked under section 354-A (sexual harassment) of the IPC and provisions of Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act on the complaint of the student, he said. The alleged incident had taken place on August 4 in the cabin of the professor in the college, the official said. The Delhi High Court today said there was a need to frame guidelines to bring in greater uniformity and transparency in evaluating the working of judicial officers in the subordinate judiciary. The high court said in the present evaluation system, the judicial officers' work and performance is supervised and graded by a committee, comprising of three high court judges. However, it has a drawback of not having any uniform set of rules or guidelines that all appraisal committees have to follow. A bench of Justices S Ravindra Bhat and Sunil Gaur said the directions passed by it regarding formulation of criteria for uniform grading of judicial officers should be suitably incorporated in the form of guidelines for future implementation and the registrar general of the high court take appropriate action to place the papers before the Chief Justice in this regard. A college girl here filed a complaint with the police today about an unknown caller who allegedly tried to incite her into participating in 'Momo Game' challenge, a new virtual suicide game. The 'Momo Game' is said to be a successor of the notorious 'Blue Whale Game' and has made headway in several countries. The first year college girl in her complaint said that she had posted in the social media after a spat with her mother during the day that she wished to take her own life. She soon received a Whatsapp message over her mobile phone from an unknown number allegedly inviting her to take the Momo Game challenge. When she sought to know the sender's identity, the person revealed it verbally, she claimed. Scared over the situation, the girl claimed she had informed her elder brother, who warned her against participating in the game. She then informed the police. A 21-year-old hotel management graduate and his friend have been arrested for allegedly stealing a car from the parking lot of a multiplex in Connaught Place on Independence Day, the police said today. The accused, identified as Ishit Monga and Akshay Arora (25), were arrested yesterday, they said. On August 15, Nischal Jain, a Gurgaon resident who had come to watch a movie at PVR Plaza with his family, found his car missing from the parking lot of the multiplex, the police said. Jain had handed his car's keys to the parking attendant. However, when he came back after the movie and asked for the keys, the attendant told him that someone had taken his vehicle by producing the parking slip, the police said.
