2 burglars arrested in Sahibabad

Two people were arrested for allegedly carrying out burglaries in Sahibabad and cash worth Rs 3.8 lakh and gold ornaments worth Rs 17 lakh were seized from their possession, police said today. Acting on a tip-off, the police arrested Nikhil and Sandeep from Chitrakoot colony of Arthla Sahibabad yesterday, Senior Superintendent of Police Vaibhav Krishna said. During interrogation, they confessed to have stolen gold ornaments and money from a house. The police also seized two country-made pistols, two cartridges and one motorcycle from their possession, the SSP said.

5 drug peddlers arrested with cannabis, heroin in J-K

Five alleged drug peddlers were arrested with heroin and cannabis from Jammu and Samba districts of Jammu and Kashmir today, police said. A police team intercepted a car at Miran Sahib in outskirts of Jammu district and during a search seized 45 grams and 40 grams of heroin from its two occupants, a police officer said. The duo, identified as Tousef Hussain and Laila Khalid of Sunjwan, was arrested, he said. In Kunjwani area of Jammu city a car was intercepted by a police team and 20 grams of heroin was seized from Arshad and Aarif who were travelling in the car, police said, adding they were arrested. In another incident, police intercepted a man at Canal road area in the city and seized 3 kg of cannabis from him, they said, adding he was arrested and a case registered against him.

CBI questions Ferozepur Range IG

A CBI team questioned IG Ferozepur Range here in connection with a complained filed by a former SSP, against whom he had ordered re-initiation of action in an old case pertaining to the alleged harassment of a revenue official, agency sources said today. A team of the central investigative agency reached here last evening and accompanied by the SSP Ferozepur, they went to IG Gurinder Singh Dhillon's official residence here, the sources said. The CBI sleuths continued their probe till early morning. The team had also gone to the IG's Patiala residence yesterday evening, they said. Former SSP Shiv Kumar Sharma had recently filed the complaint against the IG alleging that a resident of Ludhiana of allegedly demanded bribe of Rs 22 lakh on behalf of Dhillon to let him off the hook in the harassment case. Sterlite copper case: Vedanta says NGT hearing already schedule for next week

Vedanta welcomed the Supreme Court's refusal to entertain Tamil Nadu government's plea against the NGT's order allowing the mining major's access to the administrative unit inside its closed Sterlite copper plant at Tuticorin and said its appeal is already scheduled for hearing before the National Green Tribunal on Monday. "We welcome the Honourable Supreme Court's decision directing that both the maintainability and merit of our case should be heard and decided by the National Green Tribunal. 80-year-old arrrested for allegedly molesting minor girl

An 80-year-old man from Kalyan in the district was today arrested for allegedly molesting a ten-year-old girl. Yunus Sayyed, resident of Ambivili, was booked under section 354 of IPC (molestation) and relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO), police said. Sayeed, who claimed to be spiritual healer, used to give 'taveez' (sacred thread). He allegedly called the girl to his house on the pretext of giving her a taveez yesterday afternoon and molested her, police said. He was today arrested after the girl's mother appoached police.

The bench told BCCI that he has been exonerated by a criminal court in the sensational IPL spot-fixing case of 2013. Woman set afire in front of lover's house, dies

A woman in her early 20s died of burn injuries after she was allegedly set afire in front of her boyfriend's house here today, police said. Locals found the woman engulfed in flames outside the house of her boyfriend, Amit Yadav, in Bondhamunda locality here this morning, police said. They shifted the woman to Ispat General Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries, said Bira Kishore Mallick of Bandhamunda police station, who is investigating the case. The family members of the woman have alleged that Amit and his parents set her on fire. Biranchi Nayak, father of the woman, lodged a complaint with the police in this regard. He claimed that his daughter, Asha Nayak and Amit were in a relationship for the last two years and both had decided to get married. However, for the last few days, Amit was trying to evade her and a few days back he refused to marry her. Mallick said Amit has been absconding since the incident occured while his parents have been detained.

Ex-employee alleges Tesla staff's involvement in drug trafficking

HC reserves verdict on Suhaib Ilyasi's appeal against conviction in wife's murder case

The Delhi High Court today reserved its verdict on former TV anchor and producer Suhaib Ilyasi's appeal against his conviction and life imprisonment for killing his first wife, Anju, 18 years ago. A bench of Justices S Muralidhar and Vinod Goel reserved judgement after arguments concluded in the matter today and asked all parties to file their written submissions within 10 days. Ilyasi, who was taken into custody on December 16 last year after his conviction, has contended in his plea that after framing of additional charge under section 302 for the offence of murder, he was not given an opportunity to cross-examine all the witnesses. The high court, which had on April 26 granted interim bail to Ilyasi, refused to extend the relief on May 14. He later moved the Supreme Court which also refused to grant him interim bail. Ilyasi, in his appeal moved through advocate Rajiv Mohan, has claimed that the police had not collected any material for three months after the incident and there was .

Kashmiri separatists call for two-day strike from August 26 over Article 35A

Kashmiri separatists today called for a two-day strike from August 26 over the legal challenge in the Supreme Court on the validity of Article 35A and warned of a mass agitation across Jammu and Kashmir in case of any "untoward decision" by the apex court. Article 35A, incorporated in the Constitution by a 1954 Presidential Order, confers special status to the permanent residents of Jammu and Kashmir, and bars people from outside the state from acquiring any immovable property in the state. The Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL), comprising Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Mohammad Yasin Malik, said the decision to call for strike was taken after deliberations with all stakeholders. Man booked in extortion case climbs water tank, threatens self-immolation

High drama was witnessed in Bassi town here where a man climbed atop an overhead water tank with a bottle of petrol and threatened to set himself on fire if an extortion case lodged against him was not withdrawn. Mukesh Meena (40), against whom a case of extortion was lodged a few days ago, climbed on the tank and threatened to self-immolate. He claimed that he was not guilty in the case, SHO of Bassi police station Virendra Singh said. "We tried to pacify him but he was not ready to come down. His attention was diverted and a rescue team managed to reach him and bring him down. It took nearly three hours," Singh said, adding, that the man was arrested under Section 151 of the CrPC.

A local court has sentenced a man to death for raping and killing a woman while he was out on bail after being convicted earlier for a murder. While awarding the death penalty to Prakash Lahase (34) yesterday, Sessions Judge of Special Court Rajesh Nandeshwar observed, "The case falls in the category of the rarest of rare cases. Such persons are like gangrene in society which has to be removed from the body to save it." Quoting the judge, public prosecutor Shantaram Wankhede said, "The judiciary has a duty to remove the accused from the society. Criminals will have a free run if they are not punished properly, and the fear in them of deterrent will end." Illegal telephone exchange case: SC rejects Kalanithi Maran's plea

The Supreme Court today dismissed a plea filed by industrialist Kalanithi Maran challenging a Madras High Court verdict setting aside a trial court order discharging him in a case relating to the alleged setting up of "illegal" telephone exchanges. A bench of Justices Ranjan Gogoi, Navin Sinha and K M Joseph rejected Maran's plea, following which he, along with his brother and former Union telecom minister Dayanidhi Maran and others, would have to face trial in the case. On July 30, the apex court had rejected a plea filed by Dayanidhi challenging the high court's July 25 order and asked him to face trial in the case.
