SC tells LG to set up garbage disposal committee

The Supreme Court on Friday instructed Delhi's Lieutenant-Governor (LG) Anil Baijal to set up an expert committee to frame policies and remedial measures in addressing garbage menace in the capital.The Supreme Court had recently pulled up the LG for not taking productive steps in solving the garbage disposal problems in the city.The top court's two-judge bench headed by Justice Madan Bhimrao Lokur also instructed the municipal authorities to look for effective garbage disposal methods.

MLA's gunman sustains bullet injuries after his gun goes off

A gunman of the Bharatiya Janata Party legislator from Phagwara in Punjab was critically injured after he was hit by a bullet fired from his own gun, a police official said today. Nirmal Kumar (45), gunman of MLA Som Prakash, sustained bullet injuries in the incident last night, Sadar SHO Inspector Shiv Kanwal Singh said. Kumar was first rushed to a civil hospital from where he was referred to Jalandhar as his condition was critical, Singh said. He said Kumar was alone in his police quarter at the time of incident. "It is being ascertained whether the incident was an accident or if it was a suicide bid. This will become clear only after Kumar is fit to give a statement," he added.

Five-year-old rescued; one held for kidnapping

Police have rescued a five-year-old boy and arrested a man who had allegedly kidnapped him in the western suburb of Sakinaka here. Akram Khan (19), a juice-seller, has been arrested in the case, said senior inspector Kishor Sawant of Sakinaka police station. According to police, Khan, who knew the boy's family, visited them yesterday afternoon. He asked the boy's mother to make tea, and asked the boy to go out and buy biscuits. When the boy stepped out of the house, Khan's girlfriend, who is 16 years old, allegedly abducted him. As the boy did not return, the family started searching for him in the neighbourhood. Khan told the family that he will search for the child in another area and left the house. In the afternoon, the boy's father Shakir Ali Suleman Shaikh received a call from an unidentified person who demanded a ransom of Rs 1 lakh to release him. Indian IT manager in US convicted of sexually assaulting sleeping woman on flight

A 35-year-old Indian IT manager has been convicted of sexually assaulting a sleeping woman aboard a Detroit-bound flight in the US, media reports said today. Prabhu Ramamoorthy, who worked for an IT company for over two years, will be sentenced on December 12 by US District Judge Terrence Berg, The Detroit News reported. Ramamoorthy faces up to life in prison. If released, he will be deported to India. The verdict came seven months after he assaulted the 22-year-old woman during a Spirit Airlines flight from Las Vegas while his wife sat in the next seat, the report said. A federal jury in Michigan's largest city Detroit convicted Ramamoorthy, who lived in Rochester Hills city, of sexually assaulting the woman. Following a five-day trial, the jury deliberated for less than four hours before convicting Ramamoorthy, it said. Pak court issues arrest warrant against Zardari in money laundering case

A banking court here today issued non-bailable arrest warrants against Pakistan's former president and PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari and 15 other suspects in the fake bank accounts scam case, according to a media report. During the hearing of Rs 35 billion money laundering case, the court directed authorities to arrest and present Zardari, 63, before it by September 4, the Express Tribune reported. However, PPP spokesperson Farhatullah Babar issued a statement in which he quoted Zardari's counsel Farooq H Naek as saying that no warrants against the former president have been issued. The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) had declared Zardari and his sister Faryal Talpur, along with 18 other suspects, as absconders in an interim charge sheet filed in the case. Talpur had, however, obtained a bail against her arrest. The fake accounts case revolves around a 2015 inquiry into suspicious transactions when 29 benami' accounts were identified, 16 of them in the Summit Bank, eight in the .

Three arrested in Under Secretary murder case

Three persons, including a jeweller, were arrested today in connection with the murder of an Under Secretary rank officer here early this week, a senior district police officer said. The killing of the senior state official in the heart of the city had posed a great challenge to the police. "Police have arrested three persons in connection with murder of Under Secretary Rajeev Kumar on Tuesday last (August 14)...A jeweller is among those arrested," Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Manu Maharaj told reporters here. The two youths arrested in the murder case have been identified as Shravan and Sunny, both aged between 20-22, the SSP said. They were held from Sachivalaya police station area under whose jurisdiction the official residence of the officer in R-block area fell, he added. Israeli police again question PM on corruption allegations

Israeli police are again questioning Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as part of their investigations into corruption allegations. Two police vehicles arrived today at Netanyahu's residence while protesters at the entrance waved a large banner reading "crime minister" and chanted slogans calling for justice. Media reported that Netanyahu is to be questioned over a corruption case involving Israel's telecom giant. Police had no immediate comment. Two Netanyahu confidants have been arrested on suspicion of promoting regulation worth hundreds of millions of dollars to the Bezeq telecom company. In return, Bezeq's subsidiary news site, Walla, allegedly provided positive Netanyahu coverage.The confidants have turned state witnesses. Two Jharkhand cops suspended for demanding bribe

Two police officers have been suspended here for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs 50,000 from the owner of a sand-laden tractor, a senior officer said. Assistant Sub-Inspector Sanjay Yadav and the officer-in-charge of Barkagaon police station, Suman Kumar, were suspended yesterday evening with immediate effect following a probe into a complaint filed by the tractor owner, SP Mayur Patel Kanhaiyall said. "In his complaint, the tractor owner alleged that the Barkagaon OC and the ASI seized his vehicle by force on August 12 even when he had all valid papers. The complainant also said that officers released his vehicle only after receiving the money," Kanhaiyall stated. J'khand HC extends Lalu's provisional bail in fodder scam

The Jharkhand High Court extended today the provisional bail of former Bihar chief minister Lalu Prasad, convicted in four fodder scam cases, till August 27. Granting the extension of the provisional bail, the bench of Justice Apresh Kumar Singh fixed August 24 as the date to hear the bail petition. Senior advocate Chitaranjan Sinha appeared for the RJD leader. The court had on August 10 extended the provisional bail till August 20 on medical grounds. The high court had on May 11 granted six weeks provisional bail to the RJD supremo on medical grounds and again extended it till August 14. Prasad has been convicted in four cases of the multi-crore rupees fodder scam. The Supreme Court today said it would hear in October a plea by one of the convicts in former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, regarding the status of probe by the CBI-led Multi Disciplinary Monitoring Agency (MDMA) into conspiracy behind the murder. The MDMA, set up in 1998, has been investigating the larger conspiracy behind Rajiv Gandhi's assassination on the night of May 21, 1991 at Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu by a woman suicide bomber, identified as Dhanu, at a poll rally. Fourteen others, including Dhanu herself, were also killed in the blast. Gandhi's assassination was perhaps the first case of suicide bombing which had claimed the life of a high-profile leader. CBI raids former Bihar minister's home, properties linked to Thakur in shelter home case

The CBI today raided nearly a dozen properties in four districts of Bihar, including residences of former state minister Manju Verma in Patna and in her native place Begusarai, in connection with the Muzaffarpur shelter home sex scandal case, officials said. Properties at seven locations in Muzaffarpur were raided, including a hotel belonging to the main accused Brajesh Thakur and residences of a few of his friends and relatives, they said. The central probe agency also raided the residence of Madhu Kumari, said to be closely involved with Thakur's NGO activities. She has been absconding. CBI arrests man for taking Rs 10 lakh bribe on behalf of an IG of Pb police

The CBI has arrested a middleman while he was allegedly receiving a bribe of Rs 10 lakh on behalf of a Punjab police inspector general posted in Ferozepur, officials said today. The action was taken on the complaint of a retired SSP of Vigilance Bureau Patiala, Punjab. "It was alleged that the complainant was being falsely implicated in a case registered against him, for which an SIT was formed by IGP, Ferozepur. It was further alleged that the SIT had searched the house of the complainant and seized certain documents and articles," a CBI spokesperson said. He said it was also alleged that the bribe was being demanded from the complainant for diluting the case and for returning the seized documents and articles. A woman was shot dead by terrorists on Friday in Pulwama's Drubgam village.The woman has been identified as Shameemaa Akhtar.In another incident, terrorists hurled a grenade at security forces in Awantipora town of Pulwama district. Policeman killed in road accident in Hazaribag

A 36-year-old police armed guard was killed when the two-wheeler he was riding was hit by a vehicle from behind near Hatyari More on the national highway-33, the police said today. The incident happened when Ishwari Prasad Mehta, who was posted at Charhi police station in Hazaribag district, was returning to the police station after his duty at an area away from it last evening, they said. On being informed about the incident, police rushed him to the Hazaribag sadar hospital where doctors declared him brought dead. 3 killed by lightning in Jharkhand

Three persons including a couple were killed after being struck by lightning at a village in Khunti district, a district official said today. A woman was also injured in the lightning strike at Tirilpidi village yesterday, the official said. The victims have been identified as Sunil Bhengra (30) his wife Sushma Bhengra (28) and Paulina Bhengra (25). The couple and their relatives - Paulina Bhengra and Asran Bhengra - were working in a paddy field when rain accompanied by thunderbolt hit the area yesterday afternoon, Khunti Sub-Divisional Officer, Pranav Kumar Paul said. Barring Asran Bhengra, the three others were taken to a hospital in a critical condition. While two of them were declared as brought dead, Paulina Bhengra was referred to the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences in Ranchi where she succumbed to her injuries today, the SDO said. SC says solid waste in Delhi a serious problem, asks LG to constitute committee

The Supreme Court today said that solid waste in Delhi is a "very serious problem" and asked the Lieutenant Governor (LG) to constitute a committee to deal with the issue. A bench headed by Madan B Lokur, while stressing that assistance of people of Delhi was required to deal with the problem, said the committee to be set up by the LG should consist of experts from the field, members from the civil society as well as Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs). The bench, also comprising Justices S Abdul Nazeer and Deepak Gupta, said the committee should also deal with the issue related to cleaning up of landfill sites at Ghazipur, Okhla and Bhalswa. Additional Solicitor General Pinky Anand, appearing for the office of LG, told the bench that she would discuss this issue with the LG and get back to the court within a week. Woman shot dead by Hizb militants in J&K's Pulwama

A woman was shot dead by suspected militants of the Hizbul Mujahideen in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama district today, police said. Shameema Bano, a resident of Quil, was shot in the Drubgam area of Pulwama, an official said. He said the woman was rushed to a hospital where doctors declared her dead.
