Two arrested as NRI bizman dies of cardiac arrest after assault in Gurgaon

Two people have been arrested after a 50-year-old NRI businessman died of cardiac arrest following an assault in the posh DLF 2 township here, police said today. Somou Balaya was assaulted by a private security guard, Pradeep Singh (46), and his employer, Manik Khosla (26), after an argument over directions Balaya had asked for when he was taking a walk in the township's P block on Wednesday, they said. "During investigation, it was found that Somou Balaya, who ran an IT company in Texas, USA, was assaulted by Singh and Khosla following a heated argument over asking of directions. Balaya thought the guard misguided him," Gurgaon Police PRO Subhash Bokan said. As the argument got heated, both Singh and Khosla roughed Balaya up, he said. "Due to the impact of the assault, Balaya collapsed on the road. Alaska man faces life in prison for Florida airport shooting

An Alaska man faces a life prison sentence in the January 2017 Florida airport shooting that left five people dead and six wounded. Sentencing is set today for 28-year-old Esteban Santiago, who pleaded guilty in May to 11 charges in a plea deal in which prosecutors agreed not to seek the death penalty. Santiago, of Anchorage, Alaska, admitted he opened fire with a handgun in a baggage area at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. The agreement calls for a life prison sentence plus 120 years. An Iraq war veteran, Santiago is diagnosed as schizophrenic but was found competent to understand legal proceedings. Santiago initially told the FBI after the shooting he was under government mind control, then switched to unfounded claims he acted in support of the Islamic State extremist group.

Jean-Claude Van Damme's son pleads guilty in knife incident

Actor Jean-Claude Van Damme's son, Nicholas Francois Van Varenberg, has pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct for holding his roommate at knifepoint. Van Varenberg, 22, entered his plea on Wednesday at an Arizona court, records show. He's is set to be sentenced on October 3, reported E! online. The incident took place in September and saw Van Varenberg arrested by police in Phoenix on suspicion of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, unlawful imprisonment, marijuana possession and possession of drug paraphernalia. Challenge Mahadayi river tribunal verdict in SC: Goa Congress

The Congress has asked the BJP- led government in Goa to challenge in the Supreme Court a tribual's verdict on sharing the Mahadayi river water with neighbouring states. Parting away with water of the Mahadayi river ((known as Mandovi in Goa) will have a "long-term impact" on Goa, the main opposition party has said. The Mahadayi River Water Tribunal (WRWT) on August 14 ruled that Karnataka will get 13.5 TMC (thousand million cubic feet) of water from the river, while Goa and Maharashtra will be allowed to use 24 TMC and 1.33 TMC of water, respectively. The BJP-led government should challenge the verdict (award) of the MRWT in the the Supreme Court, Goa Congress spokesman Yatish Naik said at a press conference here yesterday. Youth stabbed to death over monetary dispute

A 25-year-old man was allegedly stabbed to death by three persons over some monetary dispute, police said today. Babri Police Station house officer Dev Singh Rawat said the incident happened yesterday at Gogwan village in Shamli district. He said the body of Pawan Kumar has been sent for post-mortem and a case was registered against the three accused. The accused are absconding and efforts are underway to nab them, he said.

Man arrested for rape attempt on 5-year-old girl

The police have arrested a man for allegedly trying to rape a five-year-old girl, police said today. Circle Officer Rajesh Tiwari said the man, who is in his early 20s, was arrested yesterday from Kairana police station area in Shamli district following a complaint by the girl's father alleging that he tried to rape her daughter. He said the accused was beaten up by villagers before the police could nab him. A case has been registered against the man and investigation is underway, the police officer said.

Sikh man stabbed to death in his store in US

A Sikh man has been stabbed to death at his store in the US state of New Jersey, the third incident targeting the minority Sikh community in the country in three weeks. Terlok Singh was discovered dead by his cousin yesterday in his store with an apparent stab wound in the chest. The Essex County Prosecutor's office is calling the incident a homicide, according to a report in ABC7NY. The motive behind the killing was not immmediately known. Singh, described as a very kind person, is survived by his wife and children who live in India. He owned the store to support his family. Pak army chief endorses death sentences of 15 'hardcore terrorists'

Pakistan Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa today endorsed the death sentences of 15 "hardcore terrorists" convicted by special military courts. These courts were set up after the deadly Peshawar school attack of December, 2014, for speedy trials of militants. The army said in a statement that the convicted militants were involved in "attacks on armed forces and law enforcement agencies, destruction of educational institutions and killing of innocent civilians". Collectively, the terrorists were found guilty of killing 45 people, including four civilians and 41 security personnel and injuring 103 people. Arms and explosives were also recovered from their possession, and that they all confessed to being part of proscribed organisations, the army said. The courts also awarded imprisonment of varying periods to six other militants. The date of conviction and the venue of trial was not revealed due to the security of the trial courts.

Undertrial shot at outside court

An undertrial sitting in a police van was shot at by a bike-borne assailant outside a court in Chhata town today, a police official said. Karmveer was rushed to a private hospital, where his condition is stated to be critical, SP (rural) Aditya Kumar Shukla said. Vyapam scam: Court denies bail to ex-chairman of pvt college

A special court here rejected the bail plea of a former chairman of a private medical college today in a money-laundering case linked to the alleged Vyapam scam in Madhya Pradesh. Special Judge Samaresh Singh remanded accused Vinod Bhandari to judicial custody. The case against Bhandari was registered by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). An ED official said Bhandari was the chairman of Indore-based Sri Aurobindo Institute of Medical Sciences and Medical College (SAIMS) at the time of the alleged admission-and-recruitment scam, commonly known as the Vyapam (Madhya Pradesh Professional Examination Board) scam. Bhandari was booked on charges of colluding with Madhya Pradesh government officers and the exam mafia responsible for committing irregularities in holding the entrance exams for graduate and post-graduate medical courses during 2012 and 2013, the ED official said. Co-accused denied bail in salon finance manager murder case

A Mumbai court today rejected the bail plea of Khushi Sajwani, a co-accused in the killing of a 28-year-old finance manager of a salon. Sajwani's (42) bail was rejected by Additional Sessions Judge Anil Laddhad. Confirming the development, a senior Crime Branch official said her bail was rejected by the court on merit. "During the investigation, we connected all the dots and found that there was ample evidence against her. That is the reason why the court rejected her bail," he said. Sajwani and another accused Siddhesh Tamhankar (28), both colleagues of the victim, were arrested in May. The two arrested persons worked as account executive and account manager at a salon chain in suburban Andheri and used to report to the victim, Kriti Vyas. Runaway man held with Rs 39.92 lakh cash

A 40-year-old man was arrested today from Pydhonie in south Mumbai, a week after he had fled with Rs 40 lakh given to him by his friend for safekeeping, police said. The accused, Datta Ghargade, had fled to Kundapuram district in Karnataka with the cash given to him by his friend Natha Gawli from Masjid bunder area of south Mumbai, a police official said. Gawali had collected the cash from a businessman on the instructions of his boss, he said. Gawali had filed a complaint with Pydhonie police in south Mumbai following the incident. On specific information, a police team went to Kundapuram district, where they came to know that Ghargade had already left Karnataka, the official said. Subsequently, police received a tip-off that Ghargade was on his way to Mumbai and laid a trap near Sion lake today, from where he was arrested with Rs 39.92 lakh cash, he said.

Gujarat Cong leader withdraws fast after Vajpayee's death

Gujarat Congress leader Paresh Dhanani withdrew his three-day fast, launched today to demand a judicial probe into the alleged groundnut scam, following the death of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He began his fast in the morning outside the Sabarmati Ashram here. Announcing the withdrawal of the fast, Dhanani told the media the protest will resume after the completion of seven-day mourning announced by the Centre following Vajpayee's demise in the AIIMS hospital at New Delhi this evening. Hindu Mahasabha set up 'first Hindu court' in reaction to 'Sharait courts'

The Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Mahasabha today said it has established the "first Hindu court" here in reaction to a Muslim body's plan to open "Shariat courts" in all districts. National vice president Ashok Sharma of the Mahasabha said the "Hindu court" was established yesterday on India's Independence Day with Aligarh resident Pooja Shakun Pandey as its first judge. Fringe outfit members held for planning to hoist black flag on

Three members of a fringe Tamil outfit have been arrested for allegedly planning to hoist a black flag on the Independence day, police said today. Acting on a tip-off, a police team had on August 14 caught the trio who were found carrying pamphlets containing anti-India slogans, a release from police department said.
