A man carrying a reward of Rs 1 lakh on his arrest was held for allegedly robbing a cash van and killing two men at Narela in April, police said today. Jitender alias Jeetu (29) was wanted in several murder-cum-robbery cases in the National Capital Region (NCR), Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Sanjeev Kumar Yadav said. Cash van robberies were reported in Delhi earlier this year. One such incident had taken place at Narela on April 26. Three bike-borne men had allegedly robbed the cash van of a company, after killing two of its employees who had come to collect cash from a wine shop in Vardhman Mall. A Punjab court today reserved its order on a former SSP's plea to hear him before accepting a close report of the alleged Rs 1,100-crore Ludhiana City Centre scam, in which Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, his son and son-in-law are among the accused. The case, alleging that a private builder was favoured during Singh's previous term as CM, was filed in 2007 when the SAD-BJP was in power. But last year, the state Vigilance Bureau had filed a closure report, saying its reinvestigation of the alleged Rs 1,144-crore scam found nothing to substantiate the charges against Singh, his son Raninder Singh, son-in-law Raminder Singh and 33 others. The body of a 49-year-old man, who went missing on Sunday, was found in a lake in Himachal Pradesh's Chamba district today, police said. The body of Ravinder Verma alias Lovely was found in Chamera lake, one kilometre from Taleru boating point towards Brangal, they said. A resident of Dholewal in Punjab's Ludhiana district, Ravinder Verma (49) was working in Taleru in Chamba district from some time, they added. A missing report was registered at Khairi Police Station on Monday. A team led by Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Dalhousie inspected the spot, the police said, adding that prima facie no foul play was found in his death. A Delhi court today sent a man to two weeks' judicial custody in a bank loan fraud case of over Rs 5,000 crore. Additional Sessions Judge Satish Kumar Arora sent Ranjit Malik alias Johny to judicial custody till August 30 after he was produced in the court on expiry of his 14-day custodial interrogation. Special Public Prosecutor Nitesh Rana, appearing for the Enforcement Directorate (ED), told the court that the accused was not required for further custodial interrogation and he be sent to judicial custody. A resident of Punjab was arrested and 20 kg of poppy was allegedly recovered from his possession in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir today, police said. Acting on a tip off, police intercepted a truck at Hatli and seized 20 kg of poppy, police official said. The arrested person was identified as Mohammad Ramzan of Malerkotla in Punjab. A Delhi court has taken strong note of an investigating officer (IO) of a coal scam case against industrialist and Congress leader Naveen Jindal for filing "perfunctory" probe report and trying to "thwart the course of justice". A head constable posted in police lines here was arrested on charges of consuming heroin, police said today. One gram heroin was also recovered from his possession, the official added. Speaking to media persons, DSP Sarabjit Singh said head constable Manmohan Singh was arrested during routine checks here. A police team spotted Manmohan consuming heroin in a car, the DSP said. A fake call centre was busted in Indore today and 22 people were arrested for allegedly duping American citizens by posing as officials of the US Social Security department and threatening to block their security number (SSN) cards, the police said. The "fees" collected by the callers from the gullible US citizens, mostly elderly people, were converted into Bitcoins, a virtual currency, they said. The police suspect the fraudsters are in possession of SSNs, phone numbers and other confidential data of about 2.5 lakh US citizens, a senior officer said. Prima facie, the gang has duped about 1,500 US citizens. The kingpin of the gang has been identified as Vatsal Mehta (25), a resident of Ahmedabad, DIG Harinarayanchari Mishra said. An eighteen-year-old youth died after a clash with friends near Bardha Dam under Talera police station in Bundi district, police said today. The deceased was identified as Lakhan Singh, a resident of Kunhari area of Kota city, said SHO of Talera police station Purshottam Mahariya. Singh had gone to the Bardha Dam yesterday afternoon to picnic with friends. When returning in the evening, a scuffle broke out among the youths, wherein Singh sustained critical knife injuries. The Supreme Court today expressed its limitation in passing coercive orders for alleged failure by some states to set up panels on the issue of urban homelessness, saying its "whip has broken" as suggestions have been made that the judiciary should refrain from entering the domain of governance. "We have been told that governance is for the government and not for the courts. If there is no governance, we cannot do anything," a bench headed by Justice Madan B Lokur said. A police officer was arrested in Odisha's Kandhamal district today allegedly for taking Rs 10,000 bribe from a man for not entangling him in a case, a vigilance official said. Officer in-Charge of Chakapada police station, Haribandhu Parida, red-handed while accepting the money inside the police station, Vigilance SP, Mayadhar Swain, said. The SIT probing the killing of journalist-activist Gauri Lankesh today claimed that five suspects, arrested in connection with the case, were involved in rationalist M M Kalburgi's killing. Twelve suspects have been arrested in connection with the Lankesh case. A four-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a 14-year-old boy in Madhya Pradesh's Ujjain district, police said today. The boy, who was absconding, often visited the victim's house in Jalva village to watch television, a police official said. Last evening, she was alone at her house and when the boy went there and raped her, Police Sub Inspector Manoharlal Patel said. The victim disclosed the incident to her parents who filed a complaint at the Ghatiya Police Station, Patel said.
