A 55-year-old woman and her nephew were stabbed multiple times with a shovel allegedly by her brother-in-law at their residence in central Delhi's Paharganj area, police said today. The police were informed yesterday about the incident. The deceased were identified as Kaushalya and her 30-year-old nephew Purushottam. Kaushalya's son, 25-year-old Rohit, was also injured in the attack. The accused Rajkumar alias Raju attacked the trio with a shovel and aa kitchen knife while they were asleep and fled from the spot. Subsequently, he was nabbed. When police reached the spot, they found Purshottam's body lying in a pool of blood on the first floor. Kaushalya and her son were rushed to a hospital where she was declared brought dead. Tarachand, who is the brother of the accused, had informed the police about the incident. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem, police said adding that a case has been registered. Police are probing the reason behind the killings.
One man was lynched and three others were critically injured by a mob in Biswanath district of Assam that suspected them to be cattle lifters, police said today. Biswanath Superintendent of Police Diganta Kumar Choudhury told PTI the incident took place early yesterday at Line Number 15 of Diplonga Tea Estate under the Sootea police station. The SP said as per preliminary inquiry, the four men had allegedly stolen two cows from a person named Sankat Tanti and were fleeing in an auto van which had no number plate. "After Tanti shouted for help, the villagers intercepted the four and started thrashing the suspected thieves. We have recovered the auto van and the two cows," Choudhury said. Village defence party personnel called the police, which reached the spot immediately and rescued the four from the clutches of the attackers and rushed them to hospital, he said. Officials of the Mizoram Excise and Narcotics department today seized more than 200 grams of heroin, valued at Rs 10.50 lakh, from an area near here and arrested two persons in this connection. The contraband, weighing 252 gm, was seized by the anti-narcotic squad from Bawngkawn area in Aizawl, department spokesman Peter Zohmingthanga said. The heroin was reportedly smuggled from neighbouring Myanmar, he said. Lalzuineihsial (29) of Kolasib district and Ginminlun (49) of Tamenglong district of Manipur were arrested in this connection, he said. A three-year-old kindergartener died after she was left behind in a hot school van in Thailand, police said Thursday after arresting the driver. The girl was discovered Wednesday afternoon after her mother went to pick her up at the end of school in the southern province of Pattani and was told the child was absent. The mother and a teacher located the driver, who led them to the locked van where they found the body. "The girl's body was pale, no wounds, with a little blood stain at her nose," Montri Kongwatmai, commander of the Sai Buri district police, told AFP. "She must have thrashed around." An Afghan man has been arrested by customs officials at Delhi airport for allegedly trying to smuggle into the country gold valuing about Rs 32 lakh, according to an official statement issued today. The passenger was intercepted after his arrival from Mazar-e-Sharif in Afghanistan on Tuesday. His personal search resulted in recovery of a gold chain and a gold bracelet weighing 1.06 kg having market value of Rs 31.74 lakh," the customs department said in the statement. The accused has been arrested and the gold seized. In another case, an Indian man has been arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle out foreign currency worth over Rs 33 lakh. The accused in this case was intercepted by the customs officials when he was proceeding to board a flight to Dubai on Monday.
