Ktka to get 13.4TMC water from Mahadayi; Goa & Maha to get 24 TMC & 1.33 TMC each

Ending a long pending water dispute, the Mahadayi River Water Tribunal today ruled that Karnataka will get 13.4 TMC of water from the river, while Goa and Maharashtra will be allowed to use 24 TMC and 1.33 TMC of water respectively. In a 12-volume judgement, the Tribunal said the equitable distribution of Mahadayi waters among three states is "neither necessary nor feasible" at this stage. For Karnataka, the Tribunal said against its demand of 36.558 thousand million cubic feet (TMC) of water from Mahadayi, the state will be allowed to utilise 13.4 TMC of water. Out of this, the state has been permitted to divert 2.18 TMC of Mahadayi water at proposed Bhandura dam and 1.72 TMC of water at proposed Kalasa dam subject to ...

HC declines to put any restriction on reporting of Rahul Gandhi's tax matter

The Delhi High Court today declined a plea made on behalf of Congress president Rahul Gandhi to put certain restrictions on the media reporting of his petition against reopening of his 2011-12 tax assessment in connection with the Young Indian-National Herald transaction case. Gandhi's lawyers had urged a bench of Justices S Ravindra Bhat and A K Chawla to order that confidentiality be maintained regarding the contents of the petition and the reporting of the matter should only be confined to the arguments in the court. Declining to pass an order on the issue, the bench said "we cannot go into all this" as it would be akin to going on a "wild-goose chase" as it was not known who reports the contents of the matter and who was the source of the information. This is not the first attempt by the Congress president's lawyers to put restrictions on the reporting of the case, as on the last date of hearing they had orally urged the bench to prohibit the media from publishing the court ...

England star Stokes acquitted of affray

England cricketer Ben Stokes was found not guilty of affray by a jury in less than three hours of deliberations today following a trial at Bristol Crown Court. And half way through the trial Stokes's legal team attempted to have the case against him dropped but this was also refused by the judge. New Zealand-born Stokes said in his testimony last Friday he had a "significant memory blackout" but he was "absolutely not" an angry man who had lost all control. Stokes said he intervened because 28-year-old Ali and his friend Ryan Hale -- who had been acquitted earlier in the ..

Hapur lynching: Where is the cow, ask villagers

Another four days and it will be two months since a man was lynched and another seriously injured, allegedly by cow vigilantes. While 45-year-old Qasim from Pilkhuwa succumbed to injuries, 65-year-old Samiuddin of Madapur village, is still battling for life at a hospital in Ghaziabad. The Supreme Court yesterday took note of a petition by Samiuddin that he and his family were living in a state of fear with the local police forcing them to lodge a complaint of road rage, rather than lynching over alleged cow slaughter. The apex court directed a senior Uttar Pradesh police officer to probe the Hapur lynching, terming the survivor's allegations "serious". Madapur residents dismissed the rumours that the victim was involved in anything to do with cow slaughter. Where is the cow, the asked. The uproar was over a cow, but there was no cow at the spot. There was no cow, or a knife or an axe. Samiuddin had a sickle to cut fodder on his one-and-a-half bigha piece of land, he said. The police .

Actress assault: HC rejects actor Dileep's plea for digital evidence

The Kerala High Court today dismissed a petition filed by Malayalam actor Dileep seeking a copy of the digital evidence of the alleged assault of a noted south Indian actress, in which he was a key accused. When the matter came up before Justice Sunil Thomas, the Kerala government stoutly opposed it saying providing a copy of the alleged visuals to the accused would affect the privacy of the victim, who was abducted and sexually assaulted by a gang of men in a moving car here in February last year. Rejecting the plea, the judge appreciated the contention made by the government. In his petition filed in the high court in March, Dileep said he was denied the rights of a defendant by a trial court in Angamaly. He moved the high court when the lower court was set to commence trial proceedings. In February, the Angamaly Judicial Magistrate Court had dismissed a plea by Dileep seeking copies of visuals of the alleged assault committed on the actress by the gang. The magistrate court had ...
