Junior civil judge held on charge of raping woman advocate

A junior civil judge of a court in Suryapet district was arrested here today on charge of raping a 29-year-old advocate, police said. In her complaint, the woman alleged that Satyanarayana Rao (28) had sexually exploited her after promising to marry her and got engaged to another woman, they said. Based on the complaint, a case of rape under relevant IPC sections and under provisions of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act was registered against him on August 3, they added.

Court directs bizman to appear before ED in Rs 5,000 crore bank fraud case

A city court today directed a Delhi businessman, accused in a Rs 5,000-crore bank loan fraud case, to appear before the Enforcement Directorate for questioning. The direction came after the agency told the court that he was required to be confronted with a man arrested on charges of sending Rs 25 lakh cash to the official residence of a senior Congress leader here. Additional Sessions Judge Satish Kumar Arora directed businessman Gagan Dhawan, who was earlier arrested by the ED and is currently out on bail, to appear before the ED tomorrow and on August 16. The court passed the direction after special public prosecutor Nitesh Rana, appearing for ED, said that Dhawan had refused to appear before it despite repeated summons. Rana has also urged the court to cancel Dhawan's bail, alleging that he had violated the conditions imposed on him by the court at the time of granting him relief. Delhi Police Spl Cell takes over probe into Umar Khalid attack case

The Delhi Police's Special Cell today took over the probe into the attack on JNU student leader Umar Khalid, a senior police officer said. A gunshot rang out at the Constitution Club in the high-security area near Parliament yesterday when an unidentified man targeted Khalid, who escaped unhurt, witnesses said. The case was being handled till now by the district police. Incidentally, the Special Cell is also probing a sedition case against Khalid and two other students. Yesterday's incident has raised questions over the security cover in Lutyens' Delhi just two days before the Independence Day, with the police saying they were not "intimated" about the event in which Khalid was participating. Another officer, privy to the probe, said police had seized the weapon and preliminary forensic examination suggested that the pistol had jammed. Woman Vaishno Devi pilgrim dies in J-K's Reasi

A 65-year-old woman died apparently due to cardiac arrest after paying obeisance at the Vaishno Devi shrine in Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said today. Matia, a resident of Uttar Pradesh, collapsed near Panchi view point while returning from the cave shrine last evening, a police official said. He said the body was handed over to the pilgrim's legal heirs after completion of legal and medical formalities.

Coalscam: Court summons Naveen Jindal, others as accused in PMLA case

A Delhi court today summoned industrialist and Congress leader Naveen Jindal and 14 others for alleged money laundering in a case pertaining to irregularities in allocation of a Jharkhand coal block. Special Judge Bharat Parashar directed the accused persons to appear before the court on October 15. In its final report, filed through special public prosecutor N K Matta and advocate Tarannum Cheema, the ED alleged that Jindal's firm Jindal Steel and Power Ltd (JSPL) along with others influenced the screening committee to allot the coal block by investing more than Rs two crore in illegal gratification. The case pertains to the allocation of Amarkonda Murgadangal coal block in Jharkhand.

Four Rohingyas held for illegally procuring Aadhaar cards

Four Rohingyas including a woman were today arrested for allegedly illegally procuring Aadhaar and Voter ID cards by making false representation of being Indian nationals, police said. The four Myanmar nationals had migrated to Hyderabad as refugees around five years back and enrolled with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), they said. Two locals helped them procure Aadhaar cards, Voter ID cards by providing false declaration of their residential proof, Rachakonda Police Commissioner Mahesh M Bhagwat said. A city resident Mohammed Bin Omer was also arrested. A police team seized UNHCR cards besides Voter ID and Aadhaar cards (which the accused procured by suppressing their identities as Rohingya refugees of Myanmar) from the possession of the accused and they are being produced before a local court, the Commissioner said. Hyderabad is home to an estimated 3,500-4,000 Rohingyas, who reside in camps in different parts of the city.

Man gets death sentence for sodomising, killing minor boy

A court in Madhya Pradesh has awarded death sentence to a 20-year-old man for sodomising and killing a 13-year-old boy. Datia's Special Judge Hitendra Dwivedi awarded the punishment to Nand Kishore yesterday while the case of a 15-year-old co-accused was transferred to a juvenile court, public prosecutor Pushpendra Kumar Garg said. The prosecutor told the court that Kishore along with the minor co-accused lured the victim, a resident of Bijasen Muhalla area in Datia, on March 2 this year on the pretext of buying him colours for the Holi festival. They took the victim to a deserted place and then sodomised him. Later, the accused killed the victim and disposed of the body in a canal near Deluva area on the city outskirts, the prosecution said. After killing the boy, the accused called his family members and sought a ransom of Rs 1 lakh. They told the boy's family that they would kill him, if the money was not paid. Bank cashier shot dead in UP

A 32-year-old bank cashier was allegedly shot dead by three unidentified men in Uttar Pradesh's Banda district, police said today. Rajnish Karwariya -- a cashier in a co-operative bank in Banda, around 180 km south of Lucknow -- was returning home after having dinner at a roadside eatery late last night. The three unidentified motorcycle-borne assailants, who apparently wanted to loot Karwariya, shot him and fled from the spot, a police officer said. Karwariya was admitted to a hospital, where he succumbed to injuries. The body has been sent for a post-mortem examination, the officer said. A case has been registered against unknown assailants and an investigation is on, he added.

MNS corporator among 4 held for kidnapping, assaulting man

Four people, including a corporator of the Maharashtra Navnirmam Sena (MNS), were arrested here today for allegedly kidnapping and assaulting a man, police said. MNS corporator Sanjay Turde had allegedly demanded Rs 50,000 from the contractor of a toilet being constructed in Krantinagar area of suburban Kurla, senior police inspector Dattatray Shinde said. When the contractor did not pay the money, Turde's two aides kidnapped a 33-year-old supervisor from the contractor's office in Kurla yesterday, he said. They took the supervisor to Turde's office where the corporator and his three aides allegedly thrashed him, the official said. The supervisor received injuries in the assault and was admitted to a hospital, he said. Indonesia woman irked by mosque noise on trial for blasphemy

Indonesian prosecutors have sought an 18-month prison term for a woman who was charged with blasphemy after she complained about the volume of a mosque's loudspeakers. The ethnic Chinese defendant, Meiliana, 44, was arrested on May 18 about two years after her case triggered a riot in Tanjung Balai, a port town in North Sumatra province. A spokesman at the local prosecutor's office, Sumanggar Siagian, said today the sentencing demand for Meiliana was made at the District Court in Medan, the province's capital, yesterday. Mobs burned and ransacked at least 14 Buddhist temples throughout Tanjung Balai in a July 2016 riot after reports of Meiliana's complaints emerged. Madras HC transfers probe into Tuticorin police firing to CBI

The Madras High Court today transferred to the CBI the probe into the police firing in Tuticorin district during the anti-Sterlite protests that claimed 13 lives and directed the central agency to conclude the investigation in four months. It also quashed an order detaining six members of the 'Makkal Adhikaram,' a Left outfit accused of inciting violence in the district. Six of them were arrested under the National Security Act. A division bench of Justices CT Selvam and Basheer Ahmed passed the orders on a batch of petitions related to the Tuticorin police firing. On May 22, after the Tuticorin district collectorate was picketed to seek closure of the copper plant of Sterlite, a unit of the Vedanata group, over pollution concerns. Large-scale violence had followed. In the consequent police firing, 13 people were killed on May 22 and 23. Delhi: 9 more arrested in Kanwariya vandalisation case

A 55-year-old man was shot dead this morning by motorcycle-borne assailants in Chaukhara village here, police said. A 29-year-old woman activist of a political party was allegedly molested and beaten by three men while she was travelling in an auto- rickshaw here in Maharashtra, police said today.
