SC to hear PIL alleging siphoning of funds meant for SC/ST students

The Supreme Court today agreed to hear next week a PIL alleging siphoning of Rs 18,000 crore funds meant for granting scholarship to students belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. A bench comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justice A M Khanwilkar considered the submissions of lawyer M L Sharma seeking urgent hearing of the PIL. Sharma, in his plea, has referred to a report of the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India and said the money to the tune of Rs 18,000 crore, meant for scholarship for SC/ST community have been siphoned off by public servants and other functionaries. The plea said the CAG performed the audit for 2013-2017 and found irregularities in account of states of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Maharastra, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

Four illegal telephone exchanges busted in Maha; 4 arrested

Four illegal telephone exchanges being operated from different apartments have been busted here in Maharashtra and four people arrested in this connection, a police official said today. The accused were illegally routing international calls through Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP), she said. Acting on a tip-off, a police team raided four apartments at a building in Mumbra area yesterday and seized electrical equipment worth Rs 14 lakh from there, Thane police spokesperson Sukhada Narkar said. The police also seized several SIM cards of different companies, routers and laptops from the flats, she said. International calls were being illegally routed via VOIP through local mobile numbers at these exchanges, she said. Such a set up of interconnecting Internet/VOIP and mobile connections is not permitted as per Indian telecom laws, the police said, adding that the preliminary loss to the national exchequer was being ascertained. 8 identified in lynching of man over theft suspicion

At least eight more people have been identified in connection with the lynching of a man in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar district last week, police said today. The victim, Kapil Tyagi, was allegedly beaten to death by a mob on suspicion of being a thief at Bijopura village last Thursday, police had said. One person, Vikas, who was arrested earlier, has identified eight more people. Search is on to nab them, a police officer said. The officer said it was found during an investigation that no incident of theft had taken place.

10 suspected Bangladeshis held in Andaman

Altogether 10 persons were arrested from North Andaman island on suspicion of being Bangladeshis illegally residing in India using fake documents, police said today. The 10 persons, all men, were arrested from Diglipur area yesterday evening, Diglipur police station SHO Mahesh Yadav said. Diglipur is a tourist spot around 325 km from here. "The arrested persons claimed that they were from West Bengal. They had shown documents such as ration cards and voter cards but they are fake," Yadav said. They would be brought to Port Blair from North Andaman, he said.

Manafort trial turns from prosecution's case to his defense

Prosecutors rested their tax evasion and bank fraud case in the trial of former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, closing two weeks of testimony that depicted him as using millions of dollars hidden in offshore accounts to fund a luxurious lifestyle and later obtaining millions more in bank loans under false pretenses. The trial of the longtime Washington operator turns today to Manafort's defense team, which has so far blamed any wrongdoing on Rick Gates, the former Manafort protege who testified he and his former boss committed crimes together for years. Defense attorneys have called Gates a liar, philanderer and embezzler as they've sought to undermine his testimony. Manafort's lawyers have not yet said whether they will call any witnesses or present other evidence in the case. SC to hear TN's plea against NGT order giving Vedanta limited access to Tuticorin plant

The Supreme Court today agreed to hear on August 17 the plea of Tamil Nadu government challenging an order of the National Green Tribunal allowing mining major Vedanta access to the administrative unit inside its closed Sterlite copper plant at Tuticorin in the state. A bench comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justice A M Khanwilkar considered the submission of the state government and posted its plea for hearing on August 17. The NGT had on August 9 allowed Vedanta to enter its administrative unit inside its Sterlite copper plant, observing that no environmental damage would be caused by allowing access to the administrative section. The tribunal, however, had said that the plant would remain closed and the company would not have access to its production unit and directed the district magistrate to ensure this. Ex-Australian archbishop avoids jail for concealing child abuse

A former Australian archbishop convicted of concealing abuse by a notorious paedophile priest in the 1970s was confronted by enraged victims outside a courthouse today after a judge spared him jail and ordered he serve his sentence at home. Philip Wilson became one of the highest-ranked church officials convicted of covering up child sex abuse when he was found guilty in May of concealing crimes by priest Jim Fletcher in the Hunter region of New South Wales state. The Newcastle Local Court sentenced the 67-year-old to 12 months' imprisonment, with a non-parole period of six months, but also ordered that he be assessed to serve it in home detention. Hajipur shelter home: DPO arrested

District Probation Officer (DPO) of Hajipur Manmohan Prasad Singh was arrested on Monday in connection with sexual abuse of girls at a short stay home in the city.According to the allegations leveled by the inmates, Singh used to often visit the shelter home and force the girls to indulge in obscene activities. He allegedly threatened to beat them up if they tried to speak up about it.One of the girls at the shelter home revealed that she was beaten up for refusing to comply with Singh once. Man gets 7-year RI for molesting minor girl

A Thane court has sentenced a 27-year-old man to seven years' rigorous imprisonment for molesting a minor girl here in Maharashtra. District Judge P P Jadhav pronounced the accused, Sameer Javed Naik, guilty under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POSCO) Act, and also imposed a fine of Rs 12,000 on him. The victim, then aged 16 years, lived with her parents at Lokmanya Nagar in Thane, the prosecution told the court. Her family and their neighbour used to have frequent quarrels over petty issues. The neighbour once called the accused, who molested the victim and beat up her mother on June 16, 2014. The accused dragged the victim out of her house, but some neighbours rescued her, the prosecution said. Based on a complaint filed by the victim, the accused was arrested the same day. Body of Delhi woman found in canal in UP

The body of a 40-year-old woman, who went missing two days back, was found in Yamuna canal near Kandhla town in Shamli district, police said today. The woman, Shahida, a resident of Khajuri Khas in New Delhi, went missing from his daughter's house in Gangoh in Saharanpur district on August 11, they said. Anti-Sikh riots: Delhi HC to hear victims' appeals against Sajjan Kumar

The Delhi High Court on Tuesday will hear appeals by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and victims against Congress leader Sajjan Kumar's acquittal in connection with 1984 Anti-Sikh killings case.The court will also hear the appeals by five accused convicted by the trial court.According to media reports, victims of the anti-Sikh riots had last week expected relief from the court, hoping for a decision on the plea filed in 2013 in the Delhi High Court. UP: Minor allegedly raped in Madrasa

Madrasa manager and five other people have been booked for allegedly raping an 11-year-old girl in Uttar Pradesh's Ghosi area.According to the victim's mother, "The incident took place on August 4 when the Madrasa manager's brother and four others locked up the minor and raped her. The main accused has been arrested and search operations are on for the others who are absconding.""The accused had threatened the girl to not to go to the police. Muzaffarpur rapes: Arrest warrant issued against CPO's wife

Man arrested in connection with Kanwariya vandalism

A 22-year-old man was arrested for allegedly being part of a group of of Kanwariyas involved in vandalising a vehicle in west Delhi last week, police said. The incident took place on August 7 on a stretch of a busy road near Moti Nagar metro station causing a traffic snarl and forcing some of the commuters to take a detour. Last week, Rahul Billa was arrested on August 9 in connection with the attack. The accused, Yogesh, was identified after scanning CCTV footages and registers of nine kanwar camps on Najafgarh Road and arrested this evening, police said. Yogesh is a resident of JJ Colony, Dwarka and was found after Billa informed police that the accused were residents of Uttam Nagar, police said. Man went to bring drug addict juvenile to de-addiction centre, he stabs him to death

A drug addict juvenile allegedly stabbed an employee of a de-addiction centre to death after the latter had gone to bring him to the centre, the police said today. The incident was reported from west Delhi's Khyala yesterday. Yesterday, one Prakash, who works with an NOG in Laxmi Nagar, informed the police about the incident. The mother of the juvenile had called up the NGO's landline number and requested them to take her son for drug rehabilitation. Subsequently, Prakash, Nishidh and Harsh Chaudhary alias Harshu went to the woman's house to bring the minor. When they reached the house, the minor, who was standing outside his house, resisted their attempts to escort him to the car, the police said. They overpowered him but when they were returning towards their car, the minor whipped out a knife from his pocket and stabbed Chaudhary on the left side of his chest. He fell down unconscious and was rushed to a hospital where he was declared brought dead, they added.

Three arrested for supplying drugs

Three men were arrested for allegedly supplying drugs in Delhi and adjoining states, police said today. The accused were identified as Akhtar Ali (41), Jahangir (29) and Jenulabdin (49), they said. Three kg of high-grade heroin and 1 kg of alprazolam worth Rs 15 crore in the international market was recovered from their possession, said P S Kushwah, Deputy Commissioner of Police (special cell). On August 11, acting on a tip-off, police laid a trap near the Ambedkar Nagar bus stand where the accused had come to deliver the consignment to one of their contacts following which they were arrested, he said. The accused, Ali and Jahangir, revealed that the recovered consignment was supplied by a person of Latehar, a resident of the Naxal-affected area in Jharkhand, and Ali used to supply Alprazolam to that person, said the officer. Alprazolam was apparently used to enhance the potency of heroin. Ali disclosed that he has been supplying drugs for 16 years.

Remove encroachments in 2 weeks, HC tells Chettinad Cements

The Madras High Court today directed the Ariyalur district collector and its sub-collector to recover the government land encroached upon by the Chettinad Cement Corporation Ltd within two weeks. Also, the court said the Tamil Nadu government should probe into the collusion with the authorities concerned in letting the corporate encroach upon the land.
