Ashwini Sharma, director of a hostel for deaf and mute women in Awadhpuri in Bhopal, has been accused by four women of rape and molestation and police have invoked sections of the Indian Penal Code, the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act against him. A local BJP leader was booked for allegedly raping a teenager in the tribal-dominated Jashpur district of Chhattisgarh, police said today. Police said that the parents of the 19-year-old girl had filed a case of rape at Kansabel police station on August 7 against Motilal Bhagat (45), president of the Kansabel Janpad Panchayat in Jashpur. The complaint had alleged that Bhagat had raped the girl in October 2016 while she was a class 12 student staying in Kansabel in a rented house. The complaint stated that Bhagat had married her in Odisha in January this year despite he being already married. Bhagat left the girl in June following which her parents filed a complaint, the official said, adding that Bhagat had been charged with rape, kidnapping and criminal intimidation. Sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act were also invoked as the girl was a minor when the accused had raped her earlier. He said that efforts were on to nab the accused.

The Allahabad High Court today turned down an Uttar Pradesh government's plea to prevent media from reporting on the infamous Deoria's women shelter home case involving suspected sexual exploitation of its inmates. A bench of Chief Justice DB Bhosale and Justice Yashwant Varma, which had taken suo motu cognisance of the media reports on the suspected sexual racket, allegedly run by the Deoria-based Maa Vindhyavasini Mahila and Balika Sanrakshan Grih, turned down Additional Advocate General Manish Goel's request to prevent media from reporting on the case. A 17-year-old Class X student was found hanging in his room after he was allegedly assaulted by three boys who snatched his watch in Ghaziabad, police said today. The incident happened at Archna enclave in Khoda municipality last night. Three boys of the same locality had yesterday snatched a new watch of the deceased, a student of a Delhi school. When he asked them to return it, they allegedly thrashed him, said Ghaziabad Assistant Superintendent of Police Ravi Kumar. They allegedly assaulted his mother too when she reached the spot to intervene. When she returned home after filing a complaint, she found that her son was hanging from a ceiling fan in his room, the ASP said. The three accused have been detained for interrogation, he said, adding that cause of the teenager's death could be ascertained after the post-mortem report.
A 38-year-old man was today arrested here on the charge of possessing and selling cocaine, Deputy Commissioner of Excise Department C Vivekananda Reddy said today. Abdul Hameed of Adilabad district, running a travels agency, was caught while selling the drug, he said. A total of 31 gm of cocaine and Rs 7 lakh in cash besides a car were seized from Hameed and a case was registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, Deputy Commissioner of Excise Department C Vivekananda Reddy told PTI. Preliminary investigation revealed that Hameed, while making trips to Goa, had established contact with a drug smuggler who gave the former a list of customers in Hyderabad and offered him Rs 2,000 as commission for sale of one gm of cocaine that cost Rs 6,000, the official said.
The Orissa High Court today granted bail to senior IAS officer Vinod Kumar, arrested in a corruption case, and directed the vigilance court to set the bail conditions. Justice J P Das accepted the bail application of Kumar who was sentenced to three years rigorous imprisonment by the vigilance court and arrested on Friday. The special vigilance court in Bhubaneswar had also imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 on Kumar in the 2001 case. Justice Das today directed the vigilance court to set the conditions as it deemed fit before releasing the jailed officer on bail. For a default appeal memo, the high court had last week adjourned the case to today. The court also granted bail to co-convict Purna Chandra Dash in the case. The West Bengal CID today arrested three persons from the industrial town of Durgapur in West Burdwan district when they assembled to murder a businessman there, a senior officer said here. Acting on a tip-off, CID sleuths picked up "most wanted contract killers" Rabi Chowrasia, Ajit Singh and Jitendra Kumar during a raid at Durgapur's Uttarpally. Two pipe guns, one pistol, seven rounds of 8mm cartridge, two rounds of 7.65 cartridge and 280 gm of heroin were seized from their possession, the officer said. "Rabi Chowrasia brought the two others to kidnap and murder one businessman of Durgapur after he was hired by a criminal in Jamshedpur who is now absconding," he said. The Police Control Room van of the Delhi Police doubled up as a labour room recently when a woman delivered baby in it en route to hospital in north Delhi's Burari, the police said today. On August 12, a PCR van stationed at Burari received a call about an ailing woman in Satya Vihar, Burari. The staff comprising assistant sub-inspector Jitender, and head constable Mahender, rushed to the spot and reached there soon after. On reaching there, they found a 22-year-old woman in advanced labour pain. The staff immediately shifted the lady to the PCR van and sped away from there for hospital. Two brothers were killed and six others injured when their car overturned in an attempt to save a cow in Rajasthan's Sikar district today, a police official said. The car was on its way to Salasar from Jaipur, said Ghasiram, a sub-inspector posted at Sadar police station. The deceased were identified as Ashish Saini (26) and Nikhil Saini (22). Three critically injured people were referred to a hospital in Jaipur, the sub-inspector said. The Supreme Court today directed the Tamil Nadu government to give retiral benefits to five former judicial officers, who were appointed as fast track judges from the Bar and were later relieved. The apex court set aside the April 1, 2015 verdict of the Madras High Court, saying it had erred in rejecting the claim of pension of the five officers. The five former judicial officers were appointed as fast track judges from the Bar in Tamil Nadu, consequent to creation of fast track courts (FTC) under the Eleventh Finance Commission Report of the Government of India.
